MEET PENNY THE PENGUIN – OFFICIAL MASCOT OF THE MELBOURNE 2007
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
This is “Penny The Penguin” the official mascot for the 12th FINA World Championships –
the face of the Melbourne 2007 Championships.
The naming of the mascot followed a ’What’s my name?’ competition, run in the Herald Sun
newspaper and online at melbourne2007.com.au.
The ‘What’s my name?’ competition proved popular among the public, attracting over 1800
entries.
The Chairman of the 2007 World Swimming Championships Corporation Mr Tony Beddison AO, said that the number of
entries suggesting the name ‘Penny’ was a critical factor in naming the mascot.
Penguins, Victoria’s most famous native animals, are residents of Victorian landmark Phillip Island.
WHO WILL STAND AND DELIVER IN 2007?
Australia has staged two previous FINA World Championships in Perth in 1991 and 1998 and it
launched the careers of some of swimming’s house hold names.
In 1991, Melbourne’s Linley Frame put behind the frustrations of missing the 1990
Commonwealth Games team to win the world title in the 100m breaststroke.
When asked by Olympic gold medallist Mark Tonelli what her message to Australia was, a
beaming Frame said: “If you get the chance to do it…do it.”
That message has rung in the ears of many young Australian swimmers ever since and in 1998
Michael Klim stood and delivered an amazing seven medals – four of them gold – at the second
World Championship meet Down Under.
Now nine years on and after World Championships in Fukuoka (2001), Barcelona (2003) and Montreal (2005) the
worlds return to a country which has for the past century provided international stars.
But who will stand and deliver for the Telstra Dolphins in 2007?
Will it be captain courageous Grant Hackett – who won his first world title in Perth in 1998? Can he swim his way into
history and win 1500m title number five!
Will one of the golden girls, Libby Lenton, Leisel Jones or Jodie Henry light up Rod Laver Arena, or maybe 2007 will
herald a new name to capture the imagination of a swimming-mad Australian public.
Come April 1 those questions will be answered. Rock on Melbourne!
MELBOURNE THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS
www.melbourne.vic.gov.au
Melbourne is a lively, sophisticated city packed with shops, restaurants, bars
and cafes in wide, leafy boulevards and tiny, atmospheric laneways that
beckon to be explored.
To help visitors gain their bearings and embark on a journey of discovery, the
City of Melbourne operates a range of imaginative programs and a state-ofthe-art
Melbourne Visitor Centre at Federation Square opposite the Flinders
Street railway station.
Melbourne, a relatively modern city which is less than 200 years old, never sits still. New futuristic designs add to the
fascinating mix of architecture and ensure the skyline is constantly changing. Melbourne is very much about lifestyle. It
is no huge surprise to residents that their city has been named in an international poll as the world’s most liveable city.
Melbournians embrace three things in particular: sport (Australian Rules football is almost a religion); fashion (the look is
chic with a dash of quirky); and festivals (the calendar is packed year round).
