Musical theatre thrives at Hamilton Schools
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
A scene from Hamilton Schools’ 1995 production of “Peter Pan” directed by Mark
Frazier.
Music still fills Mark Frazier’s life four
years after he retired from Hamilton Local
Schools in 2017 after spending 31 years as
a band director and 22 years during the
same period as the district’s musical director.
Frazier started out with productions at
the middle school, including “The Wizard of
Oz,” “Charlotte’s Web,” and “Beauty and
the Beast.” Then, in 1995, he was asked to
start a yearly school district musical.
Today, as part of an extracurricular contract,
he continues to direct seventh
graders through senior students in
Hamilton’s annual musical, often shepherding
50 to 75 cast and crew, along with a production
staff and 15 to 20 adult volunteers.
“During the past 31 productions, I have
worked with just under 2,000 students,”
said Frazier, who directed five middle
school musicals and 26 district productions.
“The only year we did not produce a
show was last year due to COVID.”
The selection process for the next show
starts about seven months before opening
night. For Frazier, it starts in September
with research on possible musicals. In
November, he gets approval from the district
and rights from the company who
holds the copyright for the show.
“Many things go into the selection
process,” said Frazier. “Can we do vocals?
Can we get the rights? Can we technically
handle the show? Can we finance the show
and is it age appropriate for our students?
Finally, is it a production that the community
would enjoy?”
In December, before the start of winter
break, Frazier begins the cycle again of
casting the show, followed by Monday
through Friday rehearsals starting in
January. Set construction takes place on
the weekends.
“There are many different things I enjoy
about doing the musical,” Frazier said.
“First, is watching how the cast and crew
grow into their roles and responsibilities.
Second is getting to bring a script to life.
Third is the great staff and group of volunteers
that I get to work with. Finally, working
with the cast and crew keeps me young.”
Funding a full-scale production is
derived from the profit made from the previous
year’s production ticket sales and
proceeds from a drama parents’ organization,
candy bar sale, concession stand and
community and business donations.
“We could not do these musicals without
our great parent and community volunteers,”
said Frazier.” We have many volunteers
who still help out even though their
child graduated from high school. They
perform many important jobs–sewing, set
construction, painting, lighting, sound, costuming,
fundraising, ticket sales and concession
stand.”
Frazier said all productions have their
own particular challenges, such as 1995’s
“Peter Pan” because of flying actors and a
very large cast. Another was “Shrek” in
2019 because of technical difficulties and
“West Side Story” due to the large amount
of dancing that was required.
A move from a 1939 stage shared with
the athletic department and a tech box
with limited viewing changed things for
the better when a state-of-the-art auditorium
opened in 2009 after a new high school
was built.
“When designing the stage and auditorium,
we wanted a space that could be used
by the whole district for concerts, meetings,
school presentations and the musical,” said
Frazier. “When the building opened, the
performing arts wing included fly space,
control room, dressing rooms, orchestra pit,
scene shop, garage doors, new lighting and
sound and more storage. It is also great
that the wood shop, band room and choir
room are located nearby, instead of on the
opposite end of the building. The only thing
I miss about the old building is its history
and the amount of backstage space we had.”
While still performing in the old building–which
did not have the benefit of air
conditioning–exhaust fans cooled off the
auditorium during intermission. During a
performance, the fans were turned off, but a
set of flaps did not close. A storm moved in,
with hard rain and intense winds and rain
started to blow in on the audience and orchestra.
Dressed in a suit and tie, Frazier crawled
out on the roof with a staple gun and tarp.
“I attached the tarp over the unclosed
flaps, as the show was continuing,” said
Frazier. “I was totally soaked by time I got
off the roof. Then I had to go out for bows
dripping wet, but the orchestra and audience
remained dry.”
After the final bow, storage of costumes,
props, furniture and sets used throughout
the years is spread throughout district
buildings, including the old middle school.
Costuming is stored in the dressing room
closets and a room located sided the stage.
Sets are disassembled, reusable lumber
and hardware are put in storage and some
larger set pieces stored in out buildings.
The production dates for the 2022 musical
(the show is still to be selected) are
March 17 at 7 p.m.; March 18 at 7 p.m. and
March 19 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Ticket sales
start the beginning of March. For information,
Big developments planned for Obetz
By Katelyn Sattler
Staff Writer
The city of Obetz continues to grow.
Developer Joe Ciminello, of Ciminello’s Inc., who
has upscale developments in Grove City and New
Albany, presented the Preliminary Development Plan
of the Younkin Farm (located near the intersection of
Lockbourne and Rathmell roads) to Obetz’s Planning
and Zoning Commission on Nov. 10. This property has
been through Planning and Zoning before, as in 2007
there was preliminary approval and then, in 2008, it
was updated to include the Leave A Mark Church site.
Tentatively named “Inspiration Obetz,” the development
will consist of 242 single-family houses, including
170 houses on 50-foot lots, 158 houses on 60-foot
lots, and 96 houses on 70-foot lots, all of which will be
120-foot depths.
Ciminello has designated 25 percent open space, or
14-15 acres, which is above the 20 percent open space
requirement, which will include a playground area and
the Obetz Swim Club.
“We always want to be able to look back and be
proud that the community appreciated (in value) and
aged well,” said Ciminello.
The Obetz city administration has already approved
the plan.
Obetz Community Services Director Stacey Boumis
said they want to create interconnected neighborhoods
with walkable paths, not subdivisions.
Terry Andrews of Lennar Homes, the builder for
“Inspiration Obetz”, said the price ranges for the three
different selections of houses will be low to mid
$300,000 for Cottage level, mid $300,000 to $400,000
for Venture level, and $375,000 to $500,000 for
Cornerstone level. He said they will be comparable to
Butler Farms or better. The houses will be centered on
the lots to avoid the houses being too close to each
other.
Andrews said, because the cost of the lumber packages
have gone up by $25,000 to $30,000, the house
style and size will be pre-programmed to streamline
the process. Buyers can then pick a lot of the style and
size house they want to buy.
“Everybody’s gone to this new model, which may
stop in the near future once commodities prices come
Obetz continues to have discussions with Hamilton
Township Schools so they will be well aware of what’s
coming. The development is expected to bring up to
1,000 students to the schools over the five- to sevenyear
build-out period.
According to officials, the existing schools have been
built to allow add ons to accommodate growth in student
numbers.
Lennar Homes has committed to $1,500 per lot to
amenities such as a Swim Club and a park. The Swim
Club will have a country club type of atmosphere with
a swim team so that other swim teams will come to
Obetz to compete. The pool will be available to all
Obetz residents, not just the residents of the development.
“The community has been asking for that for years,”
said Obetz Mayor Angela Kirk.
When asked how the city will continue to pay for
services like police, fire, and snow removal, Obetz Law
Director Gene Hollins said, “Growth is driven by the
good work that’s been done for the last 25 years here to
create the commercial tax base. And we will continue
to create a commercial tax base for us and the school
district.”
The development passed Planning and Zoning with
only one commissioner voting “no” because of the 50-
foot lot size. Commissioner Dan Raver believes that’s
too small.
If Obetz City Council approves the preliminary plan
at its next meeting, it will then go through engineering
plans (administratively through the Engineering
Department), and then the final plan will be presented
to council. As the plan is conceptual, it could look different
in the end.
The Big Walnut Run Subarea B Preliminary
Development Plan was also discussed. It will consist of
66 houses on 60-foot, 70-foot, and 80-foot lots for a density
of 1.6 dwelling units per acre. The closest intersection
is Groveport and Bixby roads. An open space occupies
the northwest corner of the development, which is
wooded and acts as a floodway.
Phase 1, on the other side of Bixby Road, is more
dense and connects to the Fairchild Estates subdivision.
The children in Subarea B will attend Groveport
Madison schools. Stavroff Interests, LTD, is
the developer and Ryan Homes will build
the houses.
The Preliminary Development Plan
passed Planning and Zoning unanimously
and will go before council for approval at its
next meeting.
OCC realigns in 2024-25
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class James Swank,
of Lockbourne, is aboard Arleigh Burkeclass
guided-missile destroyer USS Chafee.
The ship is on a scheduled deployment in
the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to
military news
Friendly neighborhood rivals the Canal
Winchester Indians and the Groveport
Madison Cruisers will reunite in the same
division of the Ohio Capital Conference
starting with the 2024-25 season.
The move became possible when the 32-
team OCC approved adding Teays Valley
and Logan to the conference. Teays Valley
currently is in the Mid-State League and
Logan has competed as an independent
since its former conference, the
Southeastern Ohio Athletic League,
became defunct at the end of 2016-17. The
OCC began with eight teams in 1968 and
has since grown to its current size with
teams located throughout central Ohio.
The OCC Buckeye Division starting in
2024-25 will include: Canal Winchester,
Groveport Madison, Newark, Lancaster,
Logan, Pickerington Central,
Reynoldsburg, and Teays Valley.
The new division will excite Indian and
Cruiser fans because it places the two
rivals in the same division again after they
were moved to different ones in 2020-21.
Canal Winchester reaction
“I’m excited for our student athletes,
coaches, and community,” said Canal
Winchester High School Athletic Director
Pat Durbin of the realignment. “It is an
excellent fit for Canal Winchester and
we’re looking forward to it.”
Durbin said he likes the new OCC
Buckeye Division for many reasons.
“It’s an opportunity to develop friendly
rivalries within our proximity,” said
Durbin. “The competitive balance is very
good.”
Durbin anticipates an increase in ticket
revenue because of the neighborhood rivalries
and because fans will not have to travel
far to attend games away from home.
“These schools have fans that travel
well,” said Durbin.
Additionally, he said fans from neighboring
communities may be friends or family
members of Canal Winchester fans and
it is fun to go to a game with people who
you are close with.
“Also, our transportation costs will go
down because we will be transporting athletes
fewer miles,” said Durbin, who gave
the example that in the OCC division
Canal Winchester currently is in, it takes
about an hour and 10 minutes to travel
from Canal Winchester to Delaware Hayes
High School.
Durbin said the new division is not just
about football.
“We have 17 athletic programs that are
doing well,” said Durbin, who noted the
girls cross country team went to the regionals
this year and the boys soccer team was
district champions. “We aspire to get to a
another level. We have strength. We can
compete at a high level and welcome the
challenge. This will be highlighted in this
new division.”
Durbin, who is a member of the OCC’s
realignment committee, said that realignments
are never perfect. He said the OCC
realignment committee reviews the
league’s divisions every four years to see if
any adjustments need to be made.
However, he added, “All the members of
the OCC work together to do the best we
can to be as fair and equitable as we can.”
Groveport Madison reaction
“I love the new alignment,” said
Groveport Madison High School Athletic
Director Steve Petros. “School size isn’t
that important to me. I like the fact that,
except for Pickerington Central, the division
will be all single high school districts.”
Petros said the travel times between the
schools in the division are “fantastic” for
Groveport Madison.
“Even Logan, which seems far away, is
only 30 minutes away because of U.S.
Route 33,” said Petros. “This is about as
good as we could hope for in terms of our
teams and families having to travel.”
Petros said he is happy Groveport
Madison and Canal Winchester are back
together in the same OCC division.
“Bringing Canal Winchester in the division
with us makes all the sense in the
world,” said Petros. “I was very upset when
a school that is an exit away was put in a
different division (in 2020-21).”
Petros said this new version of the OCC
Buckeye Division will continue to be a competitive
division.
“The sports vary on who the dominant
school will be,” said Petros. “The new
schools (Teays Valley and Logan) will have
a little bit of an adjustment period but will
be just fine.”
He said the new alignment “is a great
thing for Groveport Madison.”
“I feel like we may finally have a division
that could remain the same for a long
time,” said Petros. “Our kids should be
excited to be in one of the top divisions in
the state of Ohio. We will continue to have
to work hard to be competitive in all of our
sports. I would hope that would motivate
all of our student-athletes.”
In its more than a century of athletic
competition, the Groveport Madison
Cruisers have competed in three leagues:
the Franklin County League from the early
1900s to the 1957-58 season; the Mid-Eight
League from 1958-59 to 1973-74; and the
Ohio Capital Conference from 1974-75 to
the present.
and partnerships while serving as a readyresponse
force in support of a free and open
COMMON MYTHS ABOUT DENTURES
Everyone knows when you are
wearing dentures, or do they?
They probably know only if your
dentures look unnatural or need
refitting. Many of the “tell-tale”
signs of dentures – clicking or
slipping, unpleasant odor or
stains – are actually signs of poor
fit or improper home maintenance.
Regular professional examinations
and following your
dentist’s instructions on home
care are essential steps in assuring
a “natural appearance.”
Denture wearers can’t eat normally
or even speak properly, or
can they? While not all denture
wearers can eat everything they
would like, many have very few
restrictions in their diets. So, if
you develop persistent speech or
eating problems at any time,
have your dentist check the fit of
your denture as soon as possible.
Good nutrition is just as important
for mature adults as it is for
younger persons. Properly fitting
dentures actually encourage you
to eat a varied and well-balanced
diet that maximizes your overall
health.Prepared as a public service
to promote better dental health.
Eastland-Fairifield agriculture and pharmacy programs get accredited
Two high school programs at Eastland-
Fairfield Career & Technical Schools have
created new pathways for its students by
earning industry accreditation in their
respective fields.
The pharmacy program, located at the
Fairfield Career Center, is continuing to
offer additional growth opportunities
through its accreditation with Pharmacy
Technician Certification Board, while at
Eastland Career Center the agriculture
and heavy equipment program has become
one of just two Ohio high schools to be recognized
by the Associated Equipment
Distributors.
The agriculture and heavy equipment
program at Eastland Career Center is now
recognized as an accredited program by the
Associated Equipment Distributors. AED
come from AED-accredited programs,
which often means greater exposure to
highly-recognized companies, higher-paying
jobs, and access to both at accelerated
rates.
By completing the program at Eastland-
Fairfield, students will also earn college
credit that will count for up to six course
credits, translating into up to eight fewer
weeks of post-secondary school. All
Eastland-Fairfield students that complete
the program will also graduate on the cusp
of earning bronze level status in the industry
field.
Earlier this school year, the pharmacy
technician program at Fairfield Career
Center completed the process and was notified
that it will continue to be accredited by
the Pharmacy Technician Certification
Board.
The PTCB is the accrediting body that
possesses a unifying standard for pharmacy
technician programs when addressing
medication safety and patient care. By
completing a pharmacy technician program
accredited by the PTCB, learners are then
eligible to take the PTCE (Pharmacy
Certification Board Exam), which is more
widely accepted throughout the industry
and opens doorways to future opportunities.
By completing a PTCB accredited program,
learners are not required to become
state board approved before taking the
exam and are not required to work the necessary
500 hours under physician supervision
before taking the exam. PTCB-accredited
programs also prepare Pharmacy
Technician program completers the flexibility
to explore both retail or institutional
(ex: hospital, clinic, dispensary) pharmacy
across the country.
Being a PTCB accredited program also
makes additional certifications available to
students looking to create their own custom-built
experience to prepare for life
after graduation.
These certificates allow students to specialize
in specific areas of the pharmacy
technician industry, heighten the level of
tasks they are certified to complete, and
increase the level of independent engagement
with patients.
They will also prepare individuals for
their next steps be it entering the workforce,
medical school, or a post-secondary
pharmaceutical program.

Tax assistance program
According to Franklin County Auditor Michael
Stinziano, the Property Tax Assistance Program will
accept applications from low-income elderly homeowners
who need help paying their 2021 first half property taxes.
The PTAP provides emergency one-time property
tax assistance to low-income homeowners age 60 or
older and is a nonprofit entity funded solely through
donations. The auditor’s office has administered the
program since November 2019.
“PTAP plays a crucial role by helping our elderly
homeowners on fixed incomes keep their homes
despite rising home values,” Stinziano said.
PTAP applications are reviewed by a board that
includes the Franklin County auditor’s office, Franklin
County treasurer’s office, Franklin County Office on
Aging, and Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging.
Applications are due by Dec. 20. Information about the
program and an application can be found on the auditor’s
office website. For additional information and
questions, residents may call 614-525-3243.
