The Mainland Football premiership winners, English Cup-holders and Chatham Cup finalists, Technical, were denied another potential trophy on Saturday when they were beaten 2-1 by Miramar Rangers after Samuel Field opened the scoring for the hosts in the 55th-minute at English Park. Technical’s second defeat in the six-team competition – a substitute for the abandoned National League – guaranteed an all-Wellington decider with Rangers to meet Wellington Olympics, regardless of this weekend’s final round robin fixtures. Technical wrap up the season – with the Chatham Cup final scheduled for early 2022 – with a crack at unbeaten Olympic at English Park on Sunday. The other Southern League qualifier, Selwyn United, are also playing for pride when they seek to break their duck at Rangers, a tough ask after they were hammered 5-0 by the Wellington Phoenix last Saturday. To add a further dimension to the fixture, it marks the 100th anniversary of the first women’s inter-provincial game in New Zealand between Canterbury, the 1-0 winners, and Wellington at English Park. “It will be a massive game hosting Capital, celebrating (the anniversary) and acknowledging the history of the game,” said head coach Alana Gunn. “On the Friday night, there’s a VIP event where we’ll watch the Phoenix (debut in the A-League Women’s competition).” While it will be nice to catch up with some old faces, Gunn was focused on a more important task at hand now her squad has built some momentum. “If we win the next two games and Central don’t knock anyone else off, we’ll finish first equal with Capital and Southern on points. Then it comes down to goal difference.” Gunn has had to co-ordinate a radically different squad – several players are now Alana Gunn in the US college system or playing with the Phoenix – leaving Football Ferns veteran Annalie Longo to fulfil a vital role. With New Zealand-based players unavailable for the Ferns offshore matches due to Covid-19 restrictions, the 30-year-old midfielder is helping out the Pride rather than adding to her 124 caps in the two games against South Korea. “It’s worked out well for us,” Gunn admitted. Long-standing midfielder Whitney Hepburn was another key player, alongside captain Rebecca Lake. “Out of our starting XI, there’s probably four there from last year,” said Gunn, who wouldn’t have it any other way. “We love seeing the girls go overseas. Things like that are really rewarding to see.” Former Canterbury representatives Victoria Esson, Gabi Rennie, Asheligh Ward and Mikayla Moore were in the squad that lost to South Korea 2-1 last Saturday before bouncing back with a 2-0 win in the final match yesterday. •South Central Series: Points (men): Wellington Olympic 10, Miramar Rangers 10, Western Suburbs 6, Cashmere Technical 6, Wellington Phoenix 3, Selwyn United 0.
