HEALTH oral careNew global researchreleased earlier thisyear has revealedthat parents are notbeing the best possible examples totheir children when it comes to oralcare, with day and night brushing inthe morning and evening emergingas an unlikely casualty of theCOVID-19 pandemic.The research, conducted bytoothpaste brand Mentadent P,showed that while lockdownsprompted people across the world toreprioritise their attitudes andbehaviours to health and well-being,this positive shift unfortunately didnot translate into better oral care—acornerstone of physical healthcare.In fact, the opposite occurred;some negative habits have crept in,with good, familiar habits likebrushing twice a day decreasingamong parents and their children.The research highlights that childrenmirror parents’ behaviours at adetriment to their own health.Children are seven times more likelyto skip brushing if their parent doesnot brush day and night.Some of the shock results included:• Fewer people are brushing twice aday in comparison to two years ago,with a 5% drop in adults and an 11%drop in children.• 1 in 4 (26%) children are notbrushing their teeth day and night,and 40% of adults have reportedgoing entire days without brushingtheir teeth.• Two in every three respondentssaid they weren’t worried abouttheir oral health.• While nearly three-quarters saidthey had tooth-related problemsduring the pandemic, seven of every10 affected failed to visit the dentist.Among the respondents who reportedexperiencing oral health issues sincethe onset of the pandemic, the top fivecomplaints included bleeding gumsand teeth during brushing or flossing(30%); teeth, gum or mouth pain(30%); dry mouth (25%); general badbreath (25%); and trouble eating due tooral pain (21%).Parents also admitted to beingmore relaxed with their children’soral health habits; three in five, or61%, said they allowed their childrento eat sugary foods before going tobed. One in three, or 35%, confessedto rewarding their children with apromise that they wouldn’t have tobrush their teeth. Concerns have alsobeen raised over long lockdownperiods during which onlyemergency dentistry was permitted,with less access to regular checkupscontributing to poor oral hygiene.Prominent dentist Dr BongiweNhlangulela, better known as Dr Bee,prioritises the oral health of heryoung patients and warns parents ofthe universal truth: that childrencopy their parents. “We know thatCOVID-19 has significantly disruptedour world in unprecedented ways,but the basics of dental care stillapply, pandemic or not.“We have to remember that mostthings in dentistry are preventable,so it’s critical for every one of us—and parents have a particularresponsibility—to drive theeducational message aroundprevention, to see these actionsapplied in our daily lives,” she adds.Dr Bee’s tips for optimal oral healthare:• Brush your teeth day and night, forabout two minutes.• Use a fluoride toothpaste and asoft-bristled toothbrush.• Hold your toothbrush at a slightangle, aim the bristles toward thearea where your teeth meet yourgums, and brush gently withcircular back-and-forth motions.Don’t brush too hard or you coulddamage your gums.• Always rinse your toothbrush withclean water after brushing, thenstand it upright to air dry.• Keep it separate from thetoothbrushes of other familymembers to prevent contamination.• Daily flossing will help you reachthe bacteria in those tight spacesbetween your teeth and under thegum line, adding an extra layer oforal healthcare.• Develop better oral care routinesfor the family by brushing together,day and night, with your children tohelp build habits that stick.Dr Bee is a family dentist based inJohannesburg, at her practice calledDr B Nhlangulela Inc.52Motherly LOVE Issue 1
