The Hurricane <strong>Festival</strong> has taken place<br />
since 1997, always occuring in June on the<br />
Eichenring in Scheeßel near Hamburg.<br />
With well over 70,000 guests, the festival<br />
is one of the biggest music festivals in<br />
Germany. More than 80 international stars,<br />
but also newcomers, can be seen on the<br />
four available stages & with a mixture of<br />
rock, alternative, pop and electro. By the<br />
way: the sister festival of the Hurricane is<br />
the Southside <strong>Festival</strong>, which takes place<br />
on the same weekend with identical line up<br />
in Neuhausen ob Eck.<br />

took place for the first time in 2005<br />
and has since developed into one of<br />
the top festivals in the north. It not only<br />
stands for a broad spectrum of music<br />
and offers something suitable for fans<br />
of reggae as well as rock fans or hip<br />
hoppers; a large focus is also on electronic<br />
music. The concept of alternating<br />
open-air stages is also innovative<br />
and ensures that no one misses any of<br />
the many highlights. There are now four<br />
stages, the Fire Stage, the Water Stage,<br />
the Palace Tent as well as the Manege in<br />

For centuries, the Ruhr region stood<br />
for coal mining and for the boom of<br />
the iron and steel industry, whose<br />
furnaces were powered by coal. Due<br />
to structural change, coal mining<br />
came to an end and now the former<br />
extraction sites („collieries“) stand<br />
as industrial monuments.<br />
The largest and most famous is the Zollverein<br />
colliery in Essen, whose winding<br />
tower is the best-known landmark of the<br />
Ruhr region and a symbol of the industrial<br />
culture of an entire region. After its last<br />
shift in 1986, the Zollverein colliery was<br />
transformed into a site for art, culture and<br />
the creative industries, attracting around 1.5<br />
million visitors a year. In 2001 it was designated<br />
a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<br />
Today, the site offers a variety of discoveries<br />
and exhibitions and, of course, guided tours<br />
