‘Easy care’ sheep to go on sale
By DAVID HILL
‘‘Shedding sheep’’ willbethe focus of asale
at the HawardenSaleyards next week.
Hazlett Livestock will host its firstannual
‘‘shedding sheep sale’’ on Wednesday,
January 19, from3.30pm.
The sale builds on agrowing interest in
‘‘easy care’’sheep, Hazlett Livestock stock
agentAlex Jarmansays.
He says therewill be amix of Wiltshire,
Australianwhitesand ‘‘Meatmaster’’ sheep
on sale, including rams, ewes and ewe
lambs.
‘‘It came about fromaconversation with
Daniel Wheeler, of Amberley, and Chris
Ensor, of Cust, and they wantedtomake a
feature of shedding sheep, so we made it
happen,’’ Mr Jarman says.
‘‘With the way wool pricesare, there
seemstoademand foranalternative
farming option.’’
The sale coincides withthe wellestablished
Mt Cass onfarm sale, which
will be held at 1pm on the same day and
featuresWiltshire sheep.
Sheepbreedssuch as Wiltshire,
Australianwhites, Dorper and Damara are
knownas‘‘hair sheep’’, as theynaturally
shed their wool, meaning theydon’tneed to
be shorn.
Mr Wheeler introduced Dorper and
Damara rams to his flock in 2006, crossing
them with his Finn and Texelewes in abid
to producealow cost, high output, hybrid
breed. The result was the ‘‘Meatmaster’’
sheepbreed.
‘‘Theaim then and now was to produce a
flockthat had low labour anddollar costs
and high output,’’ Mr Wheeler says. ‘‘Farm
staffare scarce, so the more we can reduce
the work on farmthe better.
‘‘A clean shedding, structurally sound
ewe that canhold conditionand produce
robust lambs with high lamb survival, good
growth and carcasstraits.’’
As well as the ‘‘Meatmasters’’, Mr
Wheeler has produced Finnand Texelcrossewes
which still need to be shorn, but
without the added costs of crutching,
tailing, dipping and combating flystrike.
It is hoped the sale will becomean
annual event.
Roadshow will seek farmer views on ETS
Farmers are expected to play akey part in
deciding which agricultural emissions
pricing framework the primary sector
recommends to Government this year.
The Primary Sector Climate Action
Partnership –HeWaka Eke Noahas
releasedadiscussion document with two
key options for farmers to considerover the
next threemonths,asalternatives to the
New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme
(ETS).
The cross agrisector partnership
includes Beef +Lamb New Zealand
(BLNZ), DairyNZand Federated Farmers,
as wellasGovernment and iwi/Maori.
‘‘It’s critical we grab thisopportunityand
develop acrediblealternative framework
as the Governmenthas already legislated to
put agriculture into the ETS if we don't,’’
DairyNZ chairperson Jim van der Poel
says.
‘‘TheETS pricing would be out of
farmers’ control and they would face a
broadbased tax.
‘‘Also, farmers wouldn’t get recognition
for onfarm work to reduce emissions.
We’reworkingtoget abetterdeal for
farmers whilestill meetingenvironmental
goals.’’
The farmlevel levy and processorlevel
hybrid levy options in the discussion
document takeasplitgas approach.
They acknowledgeshortlivedgases like
methane have adifferent warming impact
to longlived gases like carbon dioxide, and
the price for methanewill be separateand
delinked from the carbon price.
‘‘We wantthe frameworkfarmers select
to incentivise workunderway onfarm
including sequestrationand riparian
planting,’’ BLNZ chairperson Andrew
Morrison says.
‘‘Thetwo options would ensureany
revenue raised by the pricing system would
go back into research and development for
innovativesolutions and support farmers’
onfarm work to mitigate their warming
impact.’’
The new pricing framework isn’t
expectedtocomeinto force until January1,
2025,but it could be soonerifthe ETSis
selected by the Government.
The Governmenthas madeitclear they
will put agriculture into the ETS if the
partnership does not come up with a
credible alternative.
Farmers will havethe opportunityto
have asay in Februarywhen BLNZ,
DairyNZ and Federated Farmers take a
nationwide roadshow to the regions.
‘‘We’re releasing the draft discussion
document now so farmers have timeto
considerthe options,’’ Mr Morrison says.
‘‘At the roadshow meetings,we’ll explain
what the options mean for different
farming systems,and most importantly
answer questions and hear farmers’ views.’’
options will be released by the partnership
