High caliber senior hoteliersgathered for the executive discussion on“Hotel Group Consolidations are Beneficial toHealthy Growth of the Industry” moderated byBruno Huber, vice president operations Asia ofMövenpick Hotels and Resorts.On the challenge of whether hoteliers are losingin the distribution game, Jonathan Wigley,founder and CEO of Absolute Hotel Servicessaid, “If brand.com is going to battle againstthe OTAs, then we are going to lose. I wouldnot advocate anyone to invest in or purchasedistribution systems. Use licensed ones,” hecontinued.Dillip Rajakarier, CEO of Minor Hotel Groupconcurred: “You can buy technology, built itor partner with someone. Buying is expensive.Building is risky and a never-ending process,”he said to the attentive audience. But forNicholas Clayton, hospitality advisor of PontiacLand Group, the core business of hotels ismanaging channels rather distribution.” It’sabout managing the profit,” he claimed.Huber raised the issue of the mergersbetween Marriott and Starwood as wellas between Accor and Fairmont Raffles.According to Huber, 35% of the hotel roominventory in Bangkok will be under themanagement of the combined Marriott andStarwood, for instance, which could providesignificant pricing power. But for Rajakarier,deals are all about profit and return on assetsof the hotel groups. “The room inventory isowned by different owners who will pressurethe combined Marriott-Starwood. It will be abrand stretch and giving owners the facetimeand making everyone happy will be the issue.”But for Clayton, it’s a wait-and-see moment.“We shall see what value will be created.Success depends on the team at the hotel. Thecorporate helps group companies, flags, locationsand building brands.”The issue at heart, according to Symon Bridle,Roosewood Hotel Group’s chief operating officeris on how much a fair deal customers willget out of the mergers because pricing willwork itself out. “Guests will get a much moregenuine perception from smaller hotel groupsbecause of the perception of big hotel groupsbeing together [when pricing hotel rooms],”he declared.“More mergers; better for small hotelgroups,”agreed Wigley. “Mergers were doneas business decisions for shareholders, notfor customers or staff.
