The time is always
right to do what is right.
– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
InBLUEsion needs you!
We’re excited to have launched our Inclusion
initiative, InBLUEsion, at Arkansas Blue Cross and
Blue Shield! Our vision is to create and maintain an
environment where all our employees feel welcome,
valued and are thriving.
InBLUEsion is about ensuring each employee is
treated consistently and fairly and knows their input is
sought and valued.
“I’m motivated to create an environment where
people feel the playing field is level and that they
matter,” said Curtis Barnett, president and chief
executive officer. “I’m not content with us just being
a follower on any issue. I believe it’s our responsibility
to lead the change we want to see for our people and
our communities. We can no longer accept systemic
bias in any form.”
Gallup studies have found that diverse workgroups
have higher profits, and companies that emphasized
diversity in the workplace had employees who were
more likely to stay at the company. Creating an
inclusive environment is a must in the workplace,
resulting in a happier, healthier company and
community. *
Arkansas Blue Cross helps with state’s
COVID-19 vaccination education efforts
Getting a shot in the arm is the
first (and most important) step
of COVID-19 vaccination. But
knowing what to expect after you
get the vaccine runs a close second.
Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue
Shield played an essential role in
making sure those who are getting
the vaccine have that information.
The weekend of December 13, 2020,
the first trucks rolled into Arkansas
with COVID-19 vaccines, and the
Arkansas Department of Health
(ADH) reached out for support.
They had the vaccines but also
needed essential fact sheets to give
to Arkansans who received those
vaccines. Arkansas Blue Cross
answered the call and worked over
the weekend to print and deliver
26,000 essential vaccine fact sheets.
“I am extremely proud of the
lightning-fast response of our
Purchasing and Corporate
Marketing teams,” said Curtis
Barnett, president and CEO. “I also
want to thank Alicia Berkemeyer,
executive vice president and
chief health management officer,
for working closely with Dr.
Jennifer Dillaha, Arkansas’ state
epidemiologist.
“There is so much hard work and
dedication that goes on to fight
this pandemic,” Alicia continued.
“We are grateful to the frontline
caregivers and the behind-thescenes
folks – including those at
Arkansas Blue Cross – who are
making a difference during this
historic time.”
Speedy Delivery
“Within 48 hours, the Corporate
Marketing team received art,
coordinated production through
6 | InsideBlue February
Alan Moix
a local printer and prepared
the delivery of 26,000 copies
of two different forms,” said
Alison Melson, vice president of
Corporate Marketing.
“Damona Fisher, manager of brand,
public relations and marketing,
identified a local printer who
was able to turn around the job
quickly over the weekend,” Alison
continued. “Steve McKinley,
warehouse inventory specialist,
and Tracy King, marketing project
coordinator, lined up couriers on
five routes on Monday to make
sure facilities had the forms in
hand when the vaccines were
administered. It was definitely a
team effort.”
Monumental. Historic.
And that was just the beginning.
Since that first weekend, Arkansas
Blue Cross printed and distributed
more than 754,225 forms and
educational pieces.
Vaccine distribution is a challenge
worth undertaking for the health
of Arkansans. Dr. Dillaha has
mentioned Arkansas Blue Cross
numerous times during daily COVID
press conferences, recognizing our
efforts to step up.
It has been a monumental
undertaking, one that Arkansas
Blue Cross is pleased to support.
These small steps demonstrate
Arkansas Blue Cross’ commitment
Steve McKinley
to contribute in a big way to
helping turn the tide of the COVID
pandemic. In January, thousands
of frontline caregivers -- Arkansas’
most vulnerable citizens -- then
teachers and other groups received
the vaccine, and they walked away
with more than a bandage on their
arm. They also carried essential
information in their hands.
ADH is now printing and
distributing the forms, but our
contribution is monumental.
Historic.
We can be proud to be part of a
company making a difference.
Proud to be Blue.
Couriers used more than
50 routes and
400 stops to distribute
these necessary forms.
December 14
26,000 forms distributed,
23 courier stops
(6 in Little Rock and North Little Rock,
17 statewide)
January 4
17 statewide routes
January 11
154 courier stops

Arkansas Blue Cross
and Blue Shield
can be counted on to
keep information safe
Enterprise achieves HITRUST
common security framework (CSF)
Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield is now part of an elite group of organizations
worldwide that have earned HITRUST common security framework (CSF). The enterprise
demonstrated that our two data centers and two central Arkansas offices meet key state
and federal regulations and industry-defined requirements and manage risk appropriately.
A big deal
Most companies certify only a few components and then grow into other areas. Arkansas Blue Cross went for 19 domains
to get the assessment and certification we needed. Approximately 170 employees in eight areas worked over two years to
achieve the certification.
The domains included in our certification:
• Information security program
• Endpoint protection
• Portable media security
• Mobile device security
• Wireless security
• Configuration management
• Vulnerability management
• Network protection
• Transmission protection
• Password management
• Access control
• Audit logging and monitoring
• Education, training and awareness
• Third-party assurance
• Incident management
• Risk management
• Physical and environmental security
• Data protection and privacy
• Business continuity and
disaster recovery
Our members trust us to protect their
information, and HITRUST certification
shows that we take securing their
private information seriously.
– Devin Shirley,
chief information security officer
HITRUST is helping organizations ensure
that the highest standards of information
protection requirements are met when
sensitive data is accessed or stored.
Arkansas Blue Cross can be recognized
as an organization that can be counted
on for keeping information safe.
– Jeremy Huval
chief compliance officer, HITRUST
“I asked a lot of the Enterprise Information Security team, and
they delivered,” said Devin Shirley, chief information security
officer. “They juggled quite a bit of work growing the team,
training new employees and creating new processes, all while
working to meet HITRUST controls.
“I’d also like to thank Scott Mattila, principal consultant,
HITRUST. He organized the project plans and tracking systems
to coordinate efforts throughout the company and served
as the liaison between the assessors and the HITRUST
organization.”
Thank you to these divisions for their
part in achieving HITRUST CSF:
