It was in a mall car park and when I saw its badging – Mysterious Utility – I was intrigued to know what company built that vehicle. Quite obviously it was a preowned import from Japan, but there was no other branding to identify its maker. However, a quick Google search later identified the manufacturer and the mystery was solved. The Mysterious Utility, or MU as it has become known, has evolved through the generations, today there is nothing mysterious about it, it’s a genuine mid-to-large five-door SUV that has earned much respect in the serious side of the market. You see, the MU-X as it has known today, is based on the Isuzu D-Max utility/pick-up platform, it has a ladder chassis, low ratio four-wheel-drive system and live rear axle. Just as important is its ability to transport seven occupants, there are three rows of seats and each offers acceptable levels of comfort. The MU-X has just undergone a generation change, although given the aspects above, the concept is retained in full, it’s a car where form meets function, it has a pleasing design both inside and out and yet has go-anywhere capability, the mechanicals biased toward genuine off-the-seal travel. The latest MU-X comes in just one specification – it is high spec and lands here at $80,990. If you compare that to other vehicles of similar construction, it is priced not far from Ford’s Everest and Nissan’s Pathfinder, however, Toyota’s Fortuner and Mitsubishi’s Pajero Sport sit lower. Nevertheless, the MU-X is well specced with full leather trim (heated seats up front), electric front seat adjustment, satellite navigation, keyless entry and ignition and adaptive cruise control, the latter is part of an extensive suite of safety packages that earns it a five-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program rating. Under the bonnet is also a new engine from Isuzu, it’s a turbocharged four-cylinder diesel that displaces 2999cc. While its basic design would appear similar to its predecessor, there have been a lot of changes to boost power and to glean efficiencies, and bear in mind that it’s the same unit that is fitted to the D-Max and Mazda’s BT-50 series. MODERN: The interior of the MU-X is comprehensively equipped. ISUZU MU-X: Off-road tracks are no problem with a wading depth of 800m. Isuzu is no stranger to building good diesel engines, it has a huge reputation in the heavy transport field and that knowledge trickles down to its light commercial models. Power is rated at 140kW with a torque figure of 450Nm, both outputs are delivered wonderfully low at 3600rpm and 1600rpm respectively, and that’s where experience counts, power outputs that are delivered just above idle are perfect. Coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission the engine simply ticks over without strain, it works the lower part of the rev band constantly and that is what you want in a vehicle like this. Weighing in at almost 2.2-tonne, the MU-X is no lightweight, so to have the engine unstrained is best for economy, Isuzu claiming a combined cycle average of 8.3-litres usage per 100km. I took the evaluation car on a long highway run to South Canterbury and at 100km/h it sips fuel at the rate of 7.6l/100km, the engine is working over just shy of the area of maximum torque at 1500rpm, ready to lunge if an overtake is required. When I took the car back to the dealership the fuel usage readout was sitting at 9.8l/100km (these figures converted from a km/l readout). • Price – Isuzu MU-X LS-T, $80,990 • Dimensions – Length, 4850mm; width, 1870mm; height, 1825mm • Configuration – Fourcylinder, four-wheel-drive, 2999cc, 140kW, 450Nm, six-speed automatic • Performance – 0-100km/h, 9.7sec • Fuel usage – 8.3l/100km At highway speed the MU-X cruises quietly and comfortably. The spring and damper rates are sensible, locating that live rear axle is the job of multiple links and coil springs, much of the jiggle you get with that design has been eliminated, it sits controlled even over rough ground. Thompsons Track, inland from Rakaia, is a disgrace in terms of ruts and holes, those that I didn’t miss were absorbed without in-cabin shock nor vibration. Interestingly, the evaluation car had aftermarket wheels, while the 20in diameter remains the same as standard, the big Maxxis tyres soaked up the rough patches well and provided vast feedback to the steering wheel. On my journey heavy rain made for treacherous driving conditions, yet I felt at ease in the MU-X, it steered directly on the drenched surface. I also had to take a shingle road detour, so I used the consolemounted ‘terrain command’ dial to usher in four-wheel-drive (high ratio) to provide that extra bit of grip on the loose surface, in those conditions the MU-X was stable and controlled. Bearing in mind there is a lot of vehicle to get through a corner at 1.82m the MU-X is tall, yet it doesn’t lean awkwardly and has relative accuracy if a corner is presented too quickly. All factors considered the MU-X is a capable all-rounder, it is the family wagon that will take adults and children deep in the wilderness, its 235mm ground clearance, 800mm wading depth and 3.5-tonne tow rating suggests that it is no show pony, the entire vehicle is built for purpose and it accepts all challenges willingly. I never explored the MU-X’s true potential, but I was satisfied with the run I gave the evaluation car. I presented it with a job that it would often be tasked with and it did the work admirably. Given that its underpinnings are designed for a working role, its ability to provide an almost luxurious riding experience is the mark of clever engineering practices. has motoring covered!
