Goodall aims for 13th time
lucky in Coast To Coast

SAM GOODALL extinguishes
flames for a living, but there’s
one fire that continues to burn
for the multisport athlete – the
quest for a podium finish in the
Coast To Coast endurance race.
The 37-year-old firefighter
tackles the epic Longest Day
from Kumara on the West Coast
to New Brighton beach for the
13th time on Saturday, with the
goal of improving on last year’s
fourth placing.
Goodall, who lives in Lyttelton
and works shifts out of the Anzac
fire station in Wainoni, hit the
beach less than five minutes behind
third placegetter and longtime
rival Ryan Kiesanowski.
He has already had several dry
runs over the run and kayaking
legs of the 243km traverse,
with his standard preparation
programme ramping up from
December.
“The weather’s been pretty
good over the last six weeks.
Training has been a little bit
easier without having to battle
weather and changing days to get
out on the course,” he said.
However, his chances of
cracking the top-three could be
compromised by a grim weather
forecast.

River will be scrapped
for safety reasons, condemning
him to more time on the road to
Christchurch.
“We’re due some pretty horrific
weather. It’s looking highly likely
there’s not going to be a kayak,
that doesn’t suit me at all,” he
said.
“There’s a 90 per cent chance
there won’t be a mountain run
either.”
“That changes the whole
dynamic. There’s guys, the
strong runners and cyclists, that
wouldn’t really be in the ballpark
if we were doing the normal
course. Now they could be right
up there,” Goodall said.
Organisers were expected to
rule on the course format on
Thursday.
Despite the potential setback,
Goodall was undeterred and
determined the hours of hard
graft around Arthur’s Pass and
closer to home on the Port Hills
will not be in vain.
“This is the pinnacle if you
want to do outdoor sports and
test yourself against what I
believe to be the best athletes in
outdoor sports, this is the race to
do,” he said.
Goodall will see some familiar
faces at the start line with defending
champion Dougal Allan,
last year’s runner-up Sam Mason
and Kiesanowski again among
the leading contenders.

Her first port of a call to find
out what happened was a police
constable.
“He informed me of what had
happened and I asked about
Juniper and he said no, sadly
she’s gone.”
Jordaan drove to Lyttelton to
find all of her and Mackenzie’s
possessions had been burnt
or damaged in the fire. The
only thing salvageable was
Mackenzie’s guitar, which to
their surprise was still in tune.
As the shock lessened, the
reality of losing Juniper started
to set in.
“When I arrived, there was all
these logistics I had to sort out
before I could even face what
had actually occurred and what
that meant for my life, and also
I guess just trying to process the
fact that I’d lost my sidekick,”
said Jordaan.
Juniper was a friendly dog,
with one blue eye and one
brown, who stole the hearts of
many in Lyttelton.

“She was a really, really special
dog. She was so young, she didn’t
even get to live a full life,” said
Jordaan.
“I think a lot of people
love animals and love their
homes and we just forget how
integral they are to keeping us
functioning as humans.”
While she figures out her next
move, Jordaan is staying with
friends. She said she has felt the
community’s love and support.
Jordaan and Mackenzie did not
have contents insurance. Both
are artists and lost items they
depend on for their livelihood.

“It’s been incredible the
amount of support, I mean
nothing can replace Juniper but
at least things that cost money
can be replaced,” said Jordaan.
“I guess you just don’t really
ever think that’s going to happen
to you.”
