Goodall aims for 13th time<br />

lucky in Coast To Coast<br />

SAM GOODALL extinguishes<br />

flames for a living, but there’s<br />

one fire that continues to burn<br />

for the multisport athlete – the<br />

quest for a podium finish in the<br />

Coast To Coast endurance race.<br />

The 37-year-old firefighter<br />

tackles the epic Longest Day<br />

from Kumara on the West Coast<br />

to New Brighton beach for the<br />

13th time on Saturday, with the<br />

goal of improving on last year’s<br />

fourth placing.<br />

Goodall, who lives in Lyttelton<br />

and works shifts out of the Anzac<br />

fire station in Wainoni, hit the<br />

beach less than five minutes behind<br />

third placegetter and longtime<br />

rival Ryan Kiesanowski.<br />

He has already had several dry<br />

runs over the run and kayaking<br />

legs of the 243km traverse,<br />

with his standard preparation<br />

programme ramping up from<br />

December.<br />

“The weather’s been pretty<br />

good over the last six weeks.<br />

Training has been a little bit<br />

easier without having to battle<br />

weather and changing days to get<br />

out on the course,” he said.<br />

However, his chances of<br />

cracking the top-three could be<br />

compromised by a grim weather<br />

forecast.<br />

him to more time on the road to<br />

Christchurch.<br />

“We’re due some pretty horrific<br />

weather. It’s looking highly likely<br />

there’s not going to be a kayak,<br />

that doesn’t suit me at all,” he<br />

said.<br />

“There’s a 90 per cent chance<br />

there won’t be a mountain run<br />

either.”<br />

“That changes the whole<br />

dynamic. There’s guys, the<br />

strong runners and cyclists, that<br />

wouldn’t really be in the ballpark<br />

if we were doing the normal<br />

course. Now they could be right<br />

up there,” Goodall said.<br />

Organisers were expected to<br />

rule on the course format on<br />

Thursday.<br />

Despite the potential setback,<br />

Goodall was undeterred and<br />

determined the hours of hard<br />

graft around Arthur’s Pass and<br />

closer to home on the Port Hills<br />

will not be in vain.<br />

“This is the pinnacle if you<br />

want to do outdoor sports and<br />

test yourself against what I<br />

believe to be the best athletes in<br />

outdoor sports, this is the race to<br />

do,” he said.<br />

Goodall will see some familiar<br />

faces at the start line with defending<br />

champion Dougal Allan,<br />

last year’s runner-up Sam Mason<br />

and Kiesanowski again among<br />

the leading contenders.<br />

Her first port of a call to find<br />

out what happened was a police<br />

constable.<br />

“He informed me of what had<br />

happened and I asked about<br />

Juniper and he said no, sadly<br />

she’s gone.”<br />

Jordaan drove to Lyttelton to<br />

find all of her and Mackenzie’s<br />

possessions had been burnt<br />

or damaged in the fire. The<br />

only thing salvageable was<br />

Mackenzie’s guitar, which to<br />

their surprise was still in tune.<br />

As the shock lessened, the<br />

reality of losing Juniper started<br />

to set in.<br />

“When I arrived, there was all<br />

these logistics I had to sort out<br />

before I could even face what<br />

had actually occurred and what<br />

that meant for my life, and also<br />

I guess just trying to process the<br />

fact that I’d lost my sidekick,”<br />

said Jordaan.<br />

Juniper was a friendly dog,<br />

with one blue eye and one<br />

brown, who stole the hearts of<br />

many in Lyttelton.<br />

‘I lost my sidekick’<br />

“She was a really, really special<br />

dog. She was so young, she didn’t<br />

even get to live a full life,” said<br />

Jordaan.<br />

“I think a lot of people<br />

love animals and love their<br />

homes and we just forget how<br />

integral they are to keeping us<br />

functioning as humans.”<br />

While she figures out her next<br />

move, Jordaan is staying with<br />

friends. She said she has felt the<br />

community’s love and support.<br />

Jordaan and Mackenzie did not<br />

have contents insurance. Both<br />

are artists and lost items they<br />

depend on for their livelihood.<br />

“It’s been incredible the<br />

amount of support, I mean<br />

nothing can replace Juniper but<br />

at least things that cost money<br />

can be replaced,” said Jordaan.<br />

“I guess you just don’t really<br />

ever think that’s going to happen<br />

to you.”<br />
