Managing your
finances
Some students are fortunate enough to have gotten on the bitcoin train early or have an unlimited
line of credit with their parents on the completely unsubstantiated promise that “I’ll pay you back
when I get onto the Neurosurgery program.” For those of you still unsure what cryptocurrency is
or less skilled in the art of deception, you will need to think about your finances carefully for the
duration of the long and arduous course that is Medicine. We’ve collated relevant information as
well as some handy financial tips to aid your journey through the mi goreng and single-ply toilet
paper life called student living.
Jobs you can still
do in medicine!
You definitely don’t want to be looking at a full-time job with long, unpredictable hours, 5 days a
week. While university schedules, the ability to juggle between different responsibilities, and the
need for money will vary from one student to another, a casual job is usually a flexible option for
medical students. Part-time jobs also offer good flexibility. A great option for medical students
would be part-time jobs at university, such as being an anatomy lab tutor or a research assistant.
In that way, you can kill two birds with one stone; revise your anatomy and enhance your
knowledge while also earning some cash!
Another awesome option would be to tutor high school or undergraduate students (rest assured,
many students would feel comfortable in the hands of future doctors!). Tutoring will allow you to
fully control your working hours, and even have a say in the location! Other jobs that offer this
great flexibility would be walking dogs in your neighbourhood or babysitting in the evening.
Budgeting
The Barefoot Investor is a fantastically recommended money guide book that is very easy to
follow, can help you manage high expenses with low income, and help you kickstart your financial
planning. A number of apps are also available online with ready-made budgets and direct syncing
with your online accounts. Try one of these for free:
