Things
That
Actually
Matter
Passing (at least) all your hurdle exams!
Tuning into your learning style - as you will be studying throughout
your whole career
Having a good ‘bedside manner’- if patients don’t like you, you will
struggle in clinical exams and in your job
Beyond the clinical opportunities to shine, it is just as important to
present yourself professionally, that means: arriving on time (better
yet, early!), dressing appropriately (noting that patients outside your
demographic may not perceive your attire the same way you do),
treating everyone with respect and kindness (patients, nurses,
orderlies, administrative assistants, cleaners)
Having a life outside of medicine - you will be lonely, if all you have
to fill your time is med; and boring, if med is all that you can talk
about. Uni is the perfect time to try new things, and pick up that new
language you’ve always wanted to learn. You will be more relatable
to patients, and form connections more easily with them, if your
persona extends beyond that of a mere ‘medical student’
