Plan to
stop
thieves
in their
tracks

AN URGENT meeting between
police and the Spreydon-
Cashmere Community Board has
resulted in a decision to increase
signage and public awareness
around leaving valuables in cars.
The meeting came from concerned
residents reporting an
increase in car break-ins over the
summer at the Rapaki Track, Mt
Vernon Park and Victoria Park
car parks.
Senior Sergeant Roy Appley,
who spoke at the meeting, said
while police don’t keep stats
on car break-ins for particular
areas, there had been a significant
increase across the city since
December.
He said this time of year offences
like burglary and theft
increased and police were actively
doing their best to prevent them.
“We have limited resources
that we can actually increase our
proactive patrols in that area at
the present time,” Appley said.
“But nevertheless we endeavour
to do whatever we can when we
know that there’s a concern in
particular areas.”
Outcomes discussed included
putting up more signage in
areas where car break-ins were
common to warn people.

board.
“It is our intention to live

attending via a device, we believe
the obstacle of a poor quality
stream will be overcome.”
It was possible community
board meetings would continue
to be live-streamed in lower alert
levels in spite of the technical
issues with some meeting rooms.
“Staff will be investigating
options to enable this in the
future when community boards
physically meet in the same
space.”

A life-long love of repertory theatre
Brenda Hayes has
been involved with
theatre in Canterbury
for more than 50 years
and recently received
a Queen’s Service
Medal in the New
Year Honours List. She
talks to reporter Emily
Moorhouse about life
behind the curtain

BRENDA’S INTEREST in
theatre sparked while performing
in a Sacred Heart College school
play at the Canterbury Repertory
Theatre when she was 16.
She played the role of a mother
in the 1950s musical Salad Hands
– although even then Brenda
said she was more drawn to the
backstage and production side of
things.
“I just fell in love with theatre
then, really. It was just magic,”
she said. “I used to stand in the
wings at night-time and just
watch it, and I thought this is the
place for me.”
Now, at 69, Brenda has been
a volunteer for the repertory
theatre for almost 50 years, stage
directing and managing, creating
props and working on sound,
lighting and graphic design.
She was first involved in
children’s theatre and did some
acting – just small parts – before
leaving to travel.
When she returned, Brenda
joined the Canterbury Repertory
Theatre in 1972 and started off
making props. She had found
her niche working backstage,
and even remembers creating a
decapitated body to be used as a
prop for one of the plays.
Every play involved researching
the period in time and making
sure the production set matched,
a factor Brenda particularly
enjoyed.
“I’m one of those people that
likes to read up as much as I can
about something and get the
look and feel of a play right,” she
said. “Theatre can use all your
different talents like, I love art,
I love graphics, I like research
[and] I like history.”
After years of stage managing,
Brenda tried her hand at set
design, often working in shifts
to accommodate her full-time
job as a medical radiation
technologist.
“It’s a nice balance to a job, I
think,” she said. “You’ve got your
work which makes the money
but then theatre kind of balances
you off.”

Two years into her new role,
the theatre was destroyed in the
February 22, 2011 earthquake,
forcing the company to move
around temporary buildings
until they found a permanent
place.
All the while, Brenda worked
on numerous plays, helping
out with lighting and sound
production, and developing new
skills.
“I think every time there’s a
challenge and you need someone
to do something sometimes
you’ll end up doing it yourself,”
she said.
A stand-out moment for
Brenda was working on a play
in a large tent, brought to
Christchurch by an entrepreneur
after the earthquakes. One
night it was raining heavily and
Brenda was in the back row
controlling the sound, while
water ran down the back of her
neck.
While theatre brought its
challenges, it also brought
Brenda friendships and even a
life partner.
She recalled working on the
set of Mary Poppins at the Isaac
Theatre Royal when the director
asked for suggestions on what
prop should sit on a mantelpiece
in a Victorian living room.
At the same time, Brenda and
a man named Joseph, who was
the lighting designer, suggested a
stuffed mongoose.
“I just looked at him and
thought, well he’s got a strange
mind like I have,” Brenda said.
“The rest is history. We were
married seven months later.”
Brenda has also boosted
the company’s social media
presence. A few years ago, she
broke her foot and suddenly had
a lot of time on her hands, so a
friend brought around boxes of
old theatre photos dating back to
the 1930s. It took Brenda about
six years to sort through them
all, but she enjoyed the
process.
“I thought over lockdown I
could post some of the pictures
and people became really
interested, so I ended up posting
every day for about three
months,” she said.
This year, Brenda received
a Queen’s Service Medal in
the New Year Honours list,
something she said “felt rather
good” although admitted mixed
feelings due to Covid-19 making
it a sad and uncertain time for
theatre.
To celebrate her award,
Brenda’s family got together with
a cake and raised their glasses,
while Joseph gave a speech.
As for the future, Brenda said
she won’t be leaving the theatre
anytime soon.
For her, it is a way of looking
back at different stages of life,
measured by what plays she was
working on at the time.
“I can look back at when we
did Wind in the Willows and I sat
on the river bank in the gardens
for a month . . . [Now] I can walk
through parts of the garden
and I can just think of magic
moments in plays and people
and difficult props I found,” she
said. “Otherwise one day just
goes onto the next and suddenly
you’re a day older.”
Although Brenda has retired
from her full-time work, she
can’t see herself leaving the
theatre anytime soon.
“I think I’m committed,” she
said. “I’ll stop learning the
day I die.”

technology into a clinic setting means that MRI
is more accessible to pet patients 5 days a week.
Basically any animal that can fit into the scanner
(less than 180cm in circumference), can undergo
an MRI as long as sedated, as they need to be
very still. Monitoring equipment allows us to
make sure they are okay once inside the scanner.
As well as using this piece of equipment for cats
and dogs, large animals, wildlife, exotic animals
and zoo animals may take advantage of MRI at

guessing the pandemic had
encouraged more people to
get out in their gardens.
“It was pretty
competitive this year by
gee,” he said.
“People probably have a
bit of spare time because
of Covid. We’ve seen an
upgrade in the quality of
gardens and the interest.”
Andrew said it was
“quite a job” to select
top gardens because
certificates were limited.
“There’s a fair group of
people who are keen on
maintaining the standard
of the garden city and we
see that come through,” he
said.
He also said while this
year’s gardens were an
improvement on last year’s,
there were a few gardens
that looked like they hadn’t
been watered enough.
“In some areas there
was very poor quality
berms and that was very
disappointing,” Andrew
said.
Judging took place from
January 15 to February
6, with judges inspecting
gardens around the city
everyday.
“You get very tired and
there’s a lot of pressure
on you to get it done in
time, so that’s hard work
but enjoyable if you’re
interested in gardens,”
Andrew said. “Seeing all
the beautiful gardens and
talking to some of the
people that come out to
you and have a chat.”
Pink cards were put in
the mailboxes of houses
that had standout gardens
with instructions on how
to accept the certificate,
sent to winners by their
local ward.
The results of best streets
and top gardens overall
will be announced next
month, Andrew said.
While not everyone
can win, the gardens
have exceeded judges’
expectations.
“We were very happy
given the circumstances,”
he said. “There’s a lot of
stress on people and a lot
of worry for them because
of the environment that’s
currently under way and
we were pleased to see
so many taking on the
gardening and producing
great results.”

Appley said the main
driver of car break-ins was
due to offenders being able
to see property of value sitting
in unattended cars.
“If there’s one thing we
could do [it would be] to
get people to remove or
cover up valuable items
from their car so they
weren’t easily seen,” he
said. “If they don’t see it
then they don’t take it.”
Community board member
Tim Scandrett agreed,
saying hiding valuables
under the seat or in the
boot was an option.
“These people that do
this type of thing are
opportunists and if
it’s going to be hard
then they won’t do it,”
Scandrett said.
“It’s an awful
thing to happen to
someone,” he said.
“It’s just a shame it’s
one of those things
that we’ve got to be more
vigilant about.”
Scandrett praised the
Christchurch South Community
Patrol group and
said it will be upping its
presence with more patrol
groups out.
“These guys are volunteers,”
he said. “It’s
outstanding what they’re
doing.”
The board will also be

having regular catch-ups
with police about the issue.
Appley said
although some
“natural relief” can
be expected as car
break-ins start to
decline from now
through to the end
of winter, police
will continue to
take this crime seriously.
He said in the last two
years they have dedicated
a squad to dealing with
dishonesty offences.
“You should be able to
have your property in a
vehicle and not expect it
to get disturbed if your
car’s locked,” he said. “But
unfortunately for some
people that’s not enough of
a deterrent.”

Potters’ exhibition to showcase 50 years
draws enthusiastic crowd on weekend

Grondelle joined the Halswell
Pottery Group as a foundation
member, she never imagined the
the group would still be running
more than 50 years later.
Last weekend the group held
its 50th-anniversary exhibition
at its Candys Rd clubrooms,
delayed a year due to the
Covid-19 pandemic.
The exhibition was “absolutely
stunning”, Ngairie said.
“It was a reasonably sized
exhibition together with an exhibition
of retrospective pots.”
Over the years many talented
pottery makers had trained in
Halswell, and some of these
works were on display in the
retrospective exhibition, she said.
In addition to members’ work,
pottery demonstrations took
place in a marquee in front of
the clubrooms, and visitors were
also able to see the group’s range
of kilns.
This included a wood kiln,
which required stoking every
three minutes, two large combustion
kilns, an anagama kiln
and a salt kiln.

The level of public interest in
spite of the “atrocious” weather
stood out for Ngairie as a highlight.
“People just came out, it was
amazing, all day from 10am until
we closed, there were people in
large groups viewing the pots.”
Visitors were also interested in
learning pottery with the group,
to the point where the waitlist
sometimes had to be closed, she
said.
“We get people coming back,
and coming back, and coming
back.”
With the high level of enthusiasm
for pottery, Ngaire was optimistic
about the group’s future.
“I firmly believe that with the
right people it will be there in
[another] 50 years.”
