PRESIDENT'S WELCOME
It is my pleasure on behalf of Munster Rugby
to extend a warm welcome to all attending this
evening’s United Rugby Championship game.
We also extend a welcome to the Edinburgh head
coach Mike Blair, his squad of players and all the
travelling supporters.
Both Munster and Edinburgh come into this game
on the back of tough encounters last weekend which
saw Munster pick up a valuable losing point against
Glasgow Warriors, while Edinburgh faced Leinster
in Dublin and came away empty handed. Looking
at where they sit on the table, tonight’s game is very
significant for both teams and has all the makings of
another great night of rugby in Thomond Park.
I am sure you will join me in wishing Johann, his
coaching team and the entire squad our best wishes
and success in tonight’s game.
On the domestic front, all competitions and leagues
are in full swing with a full calendar of games across
all levels. The Pinergy Munster Schools Senior and
Junior cups have commenced, as has the Bank of
Ireland Munster Junior Cup.
Congratulations to our players that are on
international duty with the Ireland senior and U20s
squads. Last week for our seniors in Paris it was a
case of so close, but not to be. A valuable bonus
point was picked up and there is still a lot to play for
in this competition. Our U20s had a fantastic win in
Provence - well done to all our players involved and
our best wishes for the remainder of the campaign.
The Women’s Six Nations campaign does not kick
off until March 26, with Ireland taking on Wales in
Dublin. We look forward to welcoming them to Cork
on April 10 when they play Italy. Our best wishes
to all our players represented and congratulations
to Niamh Briggs on her appointment as assistant
coach to the team.
February 3 last saw the passing of a former Munster
Branch President and an Irish rugby legend, Tom
Kiernan. Tom’s achievements and his roles in all
things rugby at every level of the game in Ireland
and beyond is well documented. Tom was President
of the Munster Branch in the 1978/79 season. Tom
was a Corkman, a Munster man, an Irishman, but
most importantly a gentleman. Our sympathies
and thoughts are with his wife Maree, his children
Cameron, Nicola, Lynn, Julie, James, Tom and all
the family at this sad time. May Tom rest in peace.
Once again, thank you to Bank of Ireland our main
sponsor, Adidas our kit supplier and all our sponsors.
Your continued support is much appreciated.
To the brave and faithful nothing is impossible.
Sean McCullough
President, Munster Branch IRFU
Over the next few weeks, finals will take place in
some competitions, with silverware up for grabs for
the winners - a sight that in the recent past was not
possible with restrictions. Thankfully, that is now in
the past as we move on to better and more normal
times for everyone.
President: Sean McCullough | Vice President: Ger McNamara | Junior Vice President: Michael Carroll
Hon. Secretary: Muiris Mahon| Hon. Treasurer: Tom Kinirons
Chief Executive Officer: Dr. Ian Flanagan | Head Coach: Johann van Graan | Team Manager: Niall O’Donovan
ROUND 12 PREVIEW
Another exciting round of action lies ahead
in the United Rugby Championship with the
competition's leading six teams all in action.
With just two points separating first to fourth
places, jockeying for position continues in
fascinating fashion.
Friday night's action revolves around
Limerick with fifth tackling fourth as Munster
face Edinburgh.
Munster’s four-game winning run in all
competitions ended with a 13-11 defeat
against Glasgow last Friday. But they now
return to Thomond Park, where they have
won their last seven matches since Connacht
defeated them during last season's Rainbow
Cup. Edinburgh, though, are no strangers to
winning in Limerick and they were the last
Scottish side to achieve that feat with a 14-
13 success just over seven years ago. But
their only victory over an Irish province in
two years was by a solitary point against
Connacht in March last year.
Leaders Ulster, one point ahead of
Leinster, head to Newport on Sunday for
a Rodney Parade appointment with the
Dragons. Leinster, though, will already
have leapfrogged them by then if they beat
sixth-placed Ospreys in Dublin on Saturday
evening. Glasgow, currently third, are also in
action on Saturday, entertaining Benetton,
while the Scarlets host Connacht.
THE
INSIDE
TRACK
STEPHEN LARKHAM
On Tadhg Beirne…
“First and foremost, he is a rugby player, so he
understands the game exceptionally well. He
has really good skills and he shows tremendous
leadership. He has a thirst for improvement
both as a team and individually. He has been a
pleasure to work with. You don’t get many guys
like that who are top of their game and hungry
to get better.”
On the defeat to Glasgow Warriors last
weekend…
“No there's nothing that we can really put
our finger on except that combination is very
important and cohesion in in team selection
is very important. Our lesson as coaches is to
make sure that we don't complicate the week
too much. We make sure that we are very good
with the basic protocols of our game and as you
could see on the weekend, we had a number
of areas that weren't quite up to scratch. We
probably focused too much on stuff that we
wouldn't normally focus on when we've got
cohesion and in combination.”
On scrum-half selections…
“Ethan Coughlan’s away with the U20s at the
moment. We have Craig Casey away, Conor
Murray away. We have got Neilie (Cronin) and
Patrick Patterson as well. We normally have
good stocks, but we have quite a few guys
away at the moment. I think Patrick (Patterson)
was very good off the bench, added a lot of
speed around the breakdown. I think by the end
of the game as well we had started to find our
rhythm and our combination. If you contrast
the halves, the first 20 minutes of the first half
was pretty much as bad as it gets for us. We
started to click into gear after that and then in
the second half everything seemed to go our
way, but we just couldn't pick them back in
time. Patsy coming on 15 minutes to go, we
started to dominate most of the collisions. He
was good, he helped with that speed around
the ruck, his passing was mostly good and then
he's quite an attacking threat when he carries
the ball as well.”
12 WWW.MUNSTERRUGBY.IE

SIMON ZEBO
On Tadhg Beirne…
“I am probably even more impressed with
him having been with him and around him as
much as I have been over the last few months.
Obviously, he is an incredible athlete, he is
incredible over the ball, his attacking, his line
of running – everything. He ticks every box for
a second row/back row. The most impressive
thing about him would be his skills - his
offloading ability, his passing ability and just
he is a really smart rugby player. I saw over the
weekend he put in a 50:22 or something or a
pretty good attempt at one anyway so and he
is the full package. His contract is very well
deserved.”
On returning to
Munster…
“It has been great for
myself and my family. We are
all really happy. It is my home
club. It is the club I grew up wanting
to play for. Having the opportunity to
come back from Racing and rejoin the
team – I am very grateful for it. To get
to extend my stay is great. I'll just keep
doing what I'm doing and try and put
my best foot forward every week for
Munster and see what happens.”
On finding consistency…
“For me personally just trying to
get a run of games and get a nice
rhythm heading into the back end
of the season. I feel fresh. I haven't
played a lot of rugby for one
reason or another so hopefully
now we can get some consistency
and get some rhythm and attack
the final leg of the season and try
and win some silverware.”
SIX NATIONS ROUND UP
After two rounds of the Guinness Six
Nations, only France remain unbeaten,
having defeated Ireland 30-24 last Saturday
in a thrilling game in the French capital,
holding off Ireland’s second half fight back
to claim the win. With France on 9 points,
Ireland sit in third place in the table on 6
points, with England also on 6 points but
nudging ahead on points difference.
Joey Carbery
Saturday’s game was a special milestone
in the career of Joey Carbery, who made
his first ever start in the Six Nations,
kicking three conversions and a penalty
in an assured performance. His Munster
teammates Tadhg Beirne and Andrew
Conway were also on the starting team,
with Conor Murray and Peter O’Mahony
coming off the bench in the second half.
In the opening match against Wales at
Aviva Stadium, Andrew Conway scored a
brace of tries while Peter O’Mahony came
off the bench to win his 80th international
cap in Ireland’s 29-7 win.
In other Six Nations news, tickets for the
TikTok Women’s Six Nations went on sale
on Ticketmaster earlier this week. The Irish
Women’s team will play their fixture against
Italy at Musgrave Park on Sunday April 10
at 5pm with tickets available HERE.
It was recently announced that Waterford
woman and former Irish captain Niamh
Briggs has joined Greg McWilliams’
coaching team as Assistant Coach for the
series. Briggs most recently played a key
role in Munster’s Vodafone Women’s Inter-
Provincial success as Assistant Coach and
has continued her coaching development
as head coach of UL Bohemians.
Niamh Briggs
Ireland’s preparations for the Six Nations
continues, with 41 players recently taking
part in a three-day screening camp at the
HPC. The group included Chloe Pearse,
Ciara O’Halloran, Alana McInerney, Eimear
Considine, Enya Breen and Nicole Cronin
PBC SECURE PINERGY MUNSTER
SCHOOLS SENIOR CUP FINAL SPOT
Presentation Brothers College are through to the final of this year’s Pinergy Munster Schools
Senior Cup after they defeated rivals Christian Brothers College 21-19 in an absorbing and
dramatic encounter at Musgrave Park yesterday.
At one stage, PBC were 12 points down,
but showed a lot of fight in the second half
to get back into the game and ultimately,
secure the victory.
Both teams had periods of possession in the
opening exchanges but it was very much
a case of defences on top as both sides
secured crucial turnovers in a tense opening
10 minutes.
It was CBC who came closest to opening
the scoring as just after the 20-minute mark,
when Christians went through a number of
phases before Billy O’Riordan went over in
the corner. However, the pass to the winger
was called forward by referee George Clancy.
Pres hit back with a number of carries close
to the CBC line and finally broke through
when Rory O’Shaughnessy ran a terrific
line to break through before offloading to
Roussel who touched down under the posts.
Ben O’Connor’s conversion was good as
PBC took a 7-0 lead.
CBC responded and began to dominate
possession, keeping up the pressure with
scrum-half Jack Casey spotting the smallest
of gaps close to the ruck to plant the ball
on the line. Daire Burke’s conversion went
through the posts to level the game in what
was the final play of the first half.
with the conversion saw CBC go 19-7 ahead
with just over 10 minutes to go.
PBC responded with a try from Sean Condon
who went over in the corner. O’Connor’s
excellent touchline conversion sailed
through the posts to leave the score 19-14
to CBC with five minutes remaining.
A number of carries brought play close to
the CBC line before O’Connor received an
offload and was able to cross for a try which
levelled the game. The talented fullback then
kicked the conversion from a tight angle to
put his side two points up.
CBC managed to regain possession from the
kick-off. However, a loose pass saw a CBC
player isolated which resulted in a turnover
and the end of the game.
PBC now await the winners of the other semifinal
between Crescent College Comprehensive
and Bandon Grammar School.
Presentation Brothers College's Rory
O'Shaughnessy tackled by Jack Casey
of Christian Brothers College
The second half began with CBC applying
more pressure, with a number of closerange
carries setting up Burke to put in a
perfectly executed crossfield kick which
was collected in the air and grounded by
fullback Benjamin Lynch. Burke conversion
was wide as CBC took a 12-7 lead.
Burke added a try to his tally after some
tired PBC defending couldn’t keep him out,
THE LOWDOWN
THE FORM GUIDE
Edinburgh have won 6 and drawn 1 of their 10
games in the URC this season, and currently sit on
34 points, in 4th position behind Ulster, Leinster
and Glasgow Warriors. They have defeated
Scarlets, the Vodacom Bulls, Zebre Parma,
Dragons, Benetton and Cardiff Blues, drawing
against the DHL Stormers in Round 3 and losing
to Benetton by just one point in Round 2 and
Ospreys in Round 11 on a scoreline of 23-19. Last
weekend, Mike Blair’s side travelled to Dublin to
play Leinster and suffered their third defeat of the
season on a scoreline of 26-7.
Edinburgh will play Section Paloise in the next
round of the European Challenge Cup on April 8,
having defeated Saracens and Brive in the pool
stages.
THE SQUAD
Eight Edinburgh players were named in the
Scotland team that played Wales last Saturday
in Cardiff, including Edinburgh Rugby cocaptain
Grant Gilchrist at lock, Darcy Graham on
the wing, props WP Nel and Pierre Schoeman,
and hooker Stuart McInally who formed an all-
Edinburgh front row. Hamish Watson lined out
at flanker, alongside incoming summer signing
Sam Skinner. Magnus Bradbury and Blair
Kinghorn were named on the bench. Edinburgh
added Argentinian international backs Emiliano
Boffelli and Ramiro Moyano to their ranks ahead
of this season. Versatile back James Lang and
lock Glen Young both moved to the Scottish
capital from Harlequins alongside scrum-half
Ben Vellacott from Wasps and prop Luan de
Bruin from Leicester Tigers. Former Ulster
hooker Adam McBurney was also added to the
Edinburgh roster ahead of this season.
THE COACHING TICKET
Former Edinburgh club captain Mike Blair was
appointed head coach of Edinburgh ahead of the
2021/22 season. The former Scotland captain and
British & Irish Lion made over 150 appearances
for the club (2001-2012) and returned after a fiveyear
term with the national team, where he was
recruited by head coach Gregor Townsend to
occupy a dual role with Glasgow Warriors in 2017.
He joined Glasgow as assistant coach in 2016
MUNSTER V EDINBURGH | 18.02.22 | THOMOND PARK
and operated in that capacity until 2019 – helping
the club reach the PRO14 semi-final and Grand
Final (2018 and 2019) and two Champions Cup
quarter-finals (2017 and 2019) – before focusing
fully on the Scotland national team from 2017.
Blair’s backroom teams includes former Scotland
7s head coach Calum MacRae as defence coach,
2020 Olympic Gold winning Fiji Sevens head
coach Gareth Baber as skills and assistant attack
coach and former Edinburgh hooker Stevie Lawrie
RUGBY DEVELOPMENT NEWS
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS HELD
#MunsterStartsHere
The Rugby Development Department recently
delivered two regional development workshops
based on position specific skills (PSS) for
forwards. This was the first in a series of
workshops for Spring 2022 and was delivered
in both Musgrave Park and the University of
Limerick simultaneously.
The workshop was delivered by Elite Player
Development Officer Andi Kyricarou, Coach and
Player Development Officer Brendan O’Connor,
Head of Rugby Development Colm McMahon
and guest presenter on scrum technique, Conor
Twomey.
The content focused on three core forward
topics during the session, including generic
primer skills for all forwards, moving onto
developing roles and responsibilities in restarts,
and finishing the event with enhancing player
competencies in scrum technique.
The session was held in conjunction with
our player development PSS evening in both
venues, allowing coaches to view pathway
players participate in the activities during the
session.
This was also a recognised CPD coaching
workshop with attending coaches receiving 10
CPD toward their IRFU Active Coach Badge. This
is a new (pilot) qualification system developed
to recognise and award coaches for attending
CPD events like these workshops and they also
have the option of completing online modules
to support their knowledge and understanding
of the game.
The next regional event will be delivered later
in February and will focus on developing attack
and defence principles in the game. Registration
will open one week out from the event.
ONLINE WORKSHOPS HELD FOR CLUB PROs
An online workshop recently took place on
Microsoft Teams with club and school PROs
from across Munster in attendance.
The workshop, which was organised by Rugby
Committee Chairperson Patrick Durkan and
Rugby Committee Honorary Secretary Barry
Dempsey, aimed to engage with PROs and
provide guidance in their roles.
The hour-long workshop was hosted by Limerick
Leader Managing Editor Donn O’Sullivan and
also included contributions from Irish Examiner
Sports Editor Tony Leen, Sports Journalist
Murray Kinsella of the The42 and writer and
broadcaster Billy Keane.
Discussions centred around the modern role
of the club PRO, how it has evolved over time
and how those volunteers can engage with
sports media to get their message out to a wider
audience.
SUCCESS FOR BALLINA KILLALOE U18 GIRLS
By Robert Graham, Club Chairperson, Ballina Killaloe RFC
Ballina Killaloe U18 Girls won their first Munster
League final on 29 January last Saturday in a
keenly fought and highly entertaining match
vs Clonakilty RFC at Fermoy Showgrounds.
This is the first ever Munster title for BKRFC
after previous Youths rugby success in North
Munster competitions.
BKRFC started off the scoring with a well taken
try from Player of the Match Tova McMahon,
who burst through the Clonakilty defence after
a quick tap penalty. Clonakilty immediately
responded with a line break out wide on the
right, their winger rounding the defence to
score under the posts and draw the game 7-7
with less than eight minutes played.
The half continued with Ballina Killaloe rebuffing
Clonakilty pressure and twice breaking
downfield, through good recycling, switching
the play to the right and the left, scoring two
more unconverted tries to leave it 22-7 going
into the final play of the half. A blindside break
down the right by Rebecca Rogers powering
through a couple of tackles to score under the
posts finished an excellent half of rugby, with
the score 29-7 in Ballina Killaloe’s favour at the
break.
The first 15 minutes of the second half saw
continued Clonakilty possession and pressure
in the Ballina Killaloe 22, with Clonakilty crossing
the try line three times yet unfortunately not
scoring thanks to a resolute defence from Ballina
Killaloe, holding the ball up twice and forcing a
knock on when a try seemed more than certain.
Ballina Killaloe regained possession and slowly
worked the ball up the pitch, through strong
carries from all the players especially Tova at 7,
Grainne Mahony at 10 and Robyn McKenna at 6,
who put in a massive effort, scoring a great try
as well as some last ditch defending to hold out
Clonakilty. In truth, all Ballina Killaloe players
stepped up to the mark today, especially Zoe
Loughran, who eventually succumbed to cramp
near the end.
Two more Ballina Killaloe tries put a gloss on the
final score, 39-7 but that’s not to say Clonakilty
were outplayed, they fought to the bitter end,
giving it all on the pitch and after. Both sides are
a great advertisement for Munster girls’ rugby.
Special mention to all the parents, families and
supporters who made the trip to Fermoy, many
thanks to all at Munster Rugby, and to Brendan
Foley for presenting the Player of the Match
awards.
ONLINE WORKSHOPS HELD FOR CLUB PROs contd
For any PRO who was unable to attend, please
The Munster Rugby Communications Department
will be hosting a workshop shortly which will
focus on best practice in areas of social media,
photography and the use of video. Details of this
workshop will be communicated in due course.
GETTING TO KNOW
Mark Donnelly
First year Greencore Munster Rugby Academy player Mark Donnelly started playing
rugby in the Minis section at Midleton RFC and also played with Midleton College before
going on to win a Munster Schools Senior Cup with CBC in 2019.
The prop plays his club rugby with Garryowen FC in the AIL and has also lined out for
the Munster 7s and Munster A. He made his senior Munster debut in December against
Wasps in the Champions Cup.
He featured for Ireland in the 2021 U20 Six Nations lining out against Scotland, Wales
and England.
ON HIS RUGBY PATHWAY…
“I started playing at six or seven in Midleton
RFC and then played until I was 13 or 14.
I started playing in Midleton College and
after a year or two I moved to Christians
in Cork. I played up until 6th Year and then
moved up to Limerick, joining Garryowen
and I have been with Garryowen since. I
won the Senior Cup and it was a class year
to be fair. There was nothing better than to
sign off with the lads like that and I really
enjoyed that.”
ON PLAYING WITH THE IRELAND U20S
LAST YEAR…
“It was a great experience being over in
Wales for the month. We all really enjoyed
that. It was tough with a six-day turnaround
between games, but everyone pulled
through and everyone really enjoyed it over
there. It was an unreal experience so far
and I think everyone took their opportunity
when they got it, so it was great time over
there.”
ON HIS EXPERIENCE IN THE GREENCORE
MUNSTER RUGBY ACADEMY SO FAR…
“It has been great. It was a tough first
few weeks alright with my first senior
preseason. That was tough going for a few
weeks but I am really enjoying it now. It is
good to be back playing week in, week out
in the AIL and playing some Munster A. It’s
been a great first few months and I’m really
enjoying it.”
ON THE COMPETITION WITHIN THE
SQUAD…
“It is unbelievable. It is such an experience
- you couldn't ask for anymore. Just
learning off fellas – what more could a
young fella want coming into the Academy.
It has been a great first few months –
already I am learning so much. You are
learning new things every day. Hopefully
now I can just keep going on a good track
and catch the eyes on the coaches and
keep going.”
ON HIS AMBITIONS FOR THE SEASON…
“The main thing is to just play rugby. Last
year I was in the same
boat as a lot of younger
fellas - I didn't play much
rugby up until the U20s.
To be honest, this year is
all about getting a run of
games and trying to get
back into playing games
week in week out and just
enjoy playing rugby again.
There was a lot
of training over
the last year
or two without
many matches,
so my main
goal this year is
just to get back
playing rugby
and enjoy it.”
TWO FROM TWO FOR IRELAND U20S
The Ireland U20s have enjoyed a super
start to their U20s Six Nations campaign,
claiming a dramatic 16-17 win over France
in Provence last Friday night to add to their
opening round win over Wales in Cork on 4
February.
Despite trailing by 10 points during the first
half, Ireland fought back with a first half try
from James McCormick (Ballymena RFC)
which was converted by Charlie Tector
(Lansdowne FC), leaving the score 10-7 at
half time. Ben Brownlee (UCD) crossed in
the 79th minute for Ireland’s second try,
with Tector slotting the conversion and
match winner.
The win against France was only the second
ever win for the Ireland U20s on French soil
– the last time was in 2012.
Munster duo Patrick Campbell (Young
Munster) and Ethan Coughlan (Shannon)
were both named on the starting team with
Darragh McSweeney (Shannon) and Conor
Moloney (Young Munster) coming off the
bench to play their part in what was
November last, was with Keith Earls, where
he discussed his book Fight or Flight.
The second, held on 7 February, was with
RG Snyman, John Hodnett and Mark
Donnelly. They all discussed their playing
careers, contract extensions and injury
rehabilitation amongst other topics. In
addition, John and Mark gave an insight
POSITIVE CONTRACT NEWS CONTINUES
Munster Rugby and the IRFU confirmed
earlier this week that Tadhg Beirne has
signed a new IRFU contract which will see
him play in Ireland until at least the end of
2025. This follows the recent announcement
that Dan Goggin, John Hodnett and
James French, who are all products of
the Greencore Munster Rugby Academy,
have signed new contracts at Munster. In
addition, former All Black Malakai Fekitoa
will join the Munster ranks next season
when he makes the move from Wasps this
summer.
Currently in action with Ireland in the Six
Nations, Beirne has established himself as
a tour de force in his position. He made his
Ireland debut against Australia on the 2018
Summer Tour and featured in every game of
Ireland’s 2019 Rugby World Cup campaign.
To date Tadhg has won 27 caps for Ireland
and he was selected for the 2021 British and
Irish Lions squad featuring in the first two
Tests of the series against the Springboks. In
2018 he joined Munster Rugby from Scarlets
after winning a PRO12 title with the Welsh
side in 2017. He made his debut against
Glasgow Warriors in September of that
year and has represented Munster on 45
occasions to date.
27-year-old Dan Goggin signed a two-year
contract, taking him to at least June 2024.
The centre is a product of St. Munchin’s and
Young Munster and has scored ten tries in
72 Munster appearances.
The former Ireland U20 made his senior
debut in the bonus-point Champions Cup
win away at Wasps in December.
RWC 2015 winner Malakai Fekitoa has
signed a two-year contract. The 29-year-old
can play in either centre position. Prior to
joining Wasps in 2019, he spent two years
at Toulon and was part of the side defeated
by Munster in the 2018 Champions Cup
quarter-final at Thomond Park. He made
his All Blacks debut against England as a
22-year-old in 2014 and featured in New
Zealand’s successful 2015 Rugby World Cup
campaign. He
scored eight tries
in 24 appearances
for the All Blacks
between 2014
and 2017. On the
international front,
he now represents
his native Tonga.
Following the
devastating
tsunami that hit
the country last
month, Malakai Tadhg Beirne
is raising funds
to help those
affected.
