THE
INSIDE
TRACK
STEPHEN LARKHAM
On Tadhg Beirne…
“First and foremost, he is a rugby player, so he
understands the game exceptionally well. He
has really good skills and he shows tremendous
leadership. He has a thirst for improvement
both as a team and individually. He has been a
pleasure to work with. You don’t get many guys
like that who are top of their game and hungry
to get better.”
On the defeat to Glasgow Warriors last
weekend…
“No there's nothing that we can really put
our finger on except that combination is very
important and cohesion in in team selection
is very important. Our lesson as coaches is to
make sure that we don't complicate the week
too much. We make sure that we are very good
with the basic protocols of our game and as you
could see on the weekend, we had a number
of areas that weren't quite up to scratch. We
probably focused too much on stuff that we
wouldn't normally focus on when we've got
cohesion and in combination.”
On scrum-half selections…
“Ethan Coughlan’s away with the U20s at the
moment. We have Craig Casey away, Conor
Murray away. We have got Neilie (Cronin) and
Patrick Patterson as well. We normally have
good stocks, but we have quite a few guys
away at the moment. I think Patrick (Patterson)
was very good off the bench, added a lot of
speed around the breakdown. I think by the end
of the game as well we had started to find our
rhythm and our combination. If you contrast
the halves, the first 20 minutes of the first half
was pretty much as bad as it gets for us. We
started to click into gear after that and then in
the second half everything seemed to go our
way, but we just couldn't pick them back in
time. Patsy coming on 15 minutes to go, we
started to dominate most of the collisions. He
was good, he helped with that speed around
the ruck, his passing was mostly good and then
he's quite an attacking threat when he carries
the ball as well.”
