REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS HELD

The Rugby Development Department recently
delivered two regional development workshops
based on position specific skills (PSS) for
forwards. This was the first in a series of
workshops for Spring 2022 and was delivered
in both Musgrave Park and the University of
Limerick simultaneously.
The workshop was delivered by Elite Player
Development Officer Andi Kyricarou, Coach and
Player Development Officer Brendan O’Connor,
Head of Rugby Development Colm McMahon
and guest presenter on scrum technique, Conor
Twomey.
The content focused on three core forward
topics during the session, including generic
primer skills for all forwards, moving onto
developing roles and responsibilities in restarts,
and finishing the event with enhancing player
competencies in scrum technique.
The session was held in conjunction with
our player development PSS evening in both
venues, allowing coaches to view pathway
players participate in the activities during the
session.
This was also a recognised CPD coaching
workshop with attending coaches receiving 10
CPD toward their IRFU Active Coach Badge. This
is a new (pilot) qualification system developed
to recognise and award coaches for attending
CPD events like these workshops and they also
have the option of completing online modules
to support their knowledge and understanding
of the game.
The next regional event will be delivered later
in February and will focus on developing attack
and defence principles in the game. Registration
will open one week out from the event.
ONLINE WORKSHOPS HELD FOR CLUB PROs
An online workshop recently took place on
Microsoft Teams with club and school PROs
from across Munster in attendance.
The workshop, which was organised by Rugby
Committee Chairperson Patrick Durkan and
Rugby Committee Honorary Secretary Barry
Dempsey, aimed to engage with PROs and
provide guidance in their roles.
The hour-long workshop was hosted by Limerick
Leader Managing Editor Donn O’Sullivan and
also included contributions from Irish Examiner
Sports Editor Tony Leen, Sports Journalist
Murray Kinsella of the The42 and writer and
broadcaster Billy Keane.
Discussions centred around the modern role
of the club PRO, how it has evolved over time
and how those volunteers can engage with
sports media to get their message out to a wider
audience.
