PRESIDENT'S WELCOME
It is my pleasure on behalf of Munster Rugby
to extend a warm welcome to all attending this
evening’s United Rugby Championship game.
We also extend a welcome to the Edinburgh head
coach Mike Blair, his squad of players and all the
travelling supporters.
Both Munster and Edinburgh come into this game
on the back of tough encounters last weekend which
saw Munster pick up a valuable losing point against
Glasgow Warriors, while Edinburgh faced Leinster
in Dublin and came away empty handed. Looking
at where they sit on the table, tonight’s game is very
significant for both teams and has all the makings of
another great night of rugby in Thomond Park.
I am sure you will join me in wishing Johann, his
coaching team and the entire squad our best wishes
and success in tonight’s game.
On the domestic front, all competitions and leagues
are in full swing with a full calendar of games across
all levels. The Pinergy Munster Schools Senior and
Junior cups have commenced, as has the Bank of
Ireland Munster Junior Cup.
Congratulations to our players that are on
international duty with the Ireland senior and U20s
squads. Last week for our seniors in Paris it was a
case of so close, but not to be. A valuable bonus
point was picked up and there is still a lot to play for
in this competition. Our U20s had a fantastic win in
Provence - well done to all our players involved and
our best wishes for the remainder of the campaign.
The Women’s Six Nations campaign does not kick
off until March 26, with Ireland taking on Wales in
Dublin. We look forward to welcoming them to Cork
on April 10 when they play Italy. Our best wishes
to all our players represented and congratulations
to Niamh Briggs on her appointment as assistant
coach to the team.
February 3 last saw the passing of a former Munster
Branch President and an Irish rugby legend, Tom
Kiernan. Tom’s achievements and his roles in all
things rugby at every level of the game in Ireland
and beyond is well documented. Tom was President
of the Munster Branch in the 1978/79 season. Tom
was a Corkman, a Munster man, an Irishman, but
most importantly a gentleman. Our sympathies
and thoughts are with his wife Maree, his children
Cameron, Nicola, Lynn, Julie, James, Tom and all
the family at this sad time. May Tom rest in peace.
Once again, thank you to Bank of Ireland our main
sponsor, Adidas our kit supplier and all our sponsors.
Your continued support is much appreciated.
To the brave and faithful nothing is impossible.
Sean McCullough
President, Munster Branch IRFU
Over the next few weeks, finals will take place in
some competitions, with silverware up for grabs for
the winners - a sight that in the recent past was not
possible with restrictions. Thankfully, that is now in
the past as we move on to better and more normal
times for everyone.
President: Sean McCullough | Vice President: Ger McNamara | Junior Vice President: Michael Carroll
Hon. Secretary: Muiris Mahon| Hon. Treasurer: Tom Kinirons
Chief Executive Officer: Dr. Ian Flanagan | Head Coach: Johann van Graan | Team Manager: Niall O’Donovan
