hopefully some light and brighter 

days ahead! We've got a busy couple 

of months coming up and plenty for 

you to feast your eyes on. 

To kick things off, we've got St 

Patrick's Day on Thursday 17th March 

and with it, the opportunity to boost 

your mid week sales. We've even got 

some alternative ideas to your classic 

pint of Guinness on page 53. 

Another busy day for the industry is 

of course, Mother's Day, on 27t March. 

We've got some incredible promotions 

on wine perfect for the occasion, just 

turn to page 58 onwards. While we're 

talking about wine, World Malbec Day 

takes place on 17th April. Our faves are 

on page 59. 

We've not one, but two featured 

brewers this time around. Both 

incredible in their own ways. Our cover 

stars, Five Points, are the Hackney 

independents who produce modern, 

vibrant beer, brewed with passion and 

integrity. Find our more from page 32. 

We also talk to one of 

Buckinghamshire's favourite breweries, 

and great friends of us at Dayla, Vale 

Brewery. They've recently been taken 

over by the Brouder brothers so we 

chat to them about what makes Vale 

one of the best around, and their 

upcoming plans. Go to page 14!

in the rum category is something we 

can't ignore. We've highlighted our top

KEEPR’S HONEY INFUSED BOURBON

NEW BOTTLE DESIGN 

Keepr’s artisan British spirits are inextricably linked 

to the natural environment and its beekeeping heritage. 

Its honey infused spirits of gin, bourbon and rum are 

made with 100% pure British honey sourced from 

hives across the UK. Both authentic and traceable, 

this honey is made by British bees who have gathered 

pollen from a wonderful mix of blossoms from all 

over Britain and is regularly tested to ensure its provenance. 

Local beekeepers work hard to care for their bees and 

upporting them has a positive impact on the sustainability 

of the species. 

HAKU VODKA 

40% abv 70cl 

A vodka from Suntory! Haku Vodka is distilled from hakumai 

- Japanese white rice - with the word ‘haku’ meaning ‘white’ in 

Japanese, reflecting the clear and clean vodka. It’s twice distilled 

and filtered through bamboo charcoal. 

Complex and aromatic, with an almost botanical 

character. Cardamom, bitter lemon, and mint leaves 

meet mango sticky rice and resinous tree sap, with 

lingering sweet peppermint finish. 

Bourbon Distilled and aged in Florida by Master 

Distiller Edie Zurita, using his 35 years of expertise 

and knowledge. The bourbon is aged for 18 months 

in White American Oak Barrels and finished at our 

distillery in England where the Bourbon is stored for 

3 months in once-used bourbon casks to pick up 

a new level of char, deeper colour and develop 

further the oak spice, vanilla and caramel notes. 

Before bottling we finish with Cotswold water 

and infuse with smoked 100% British Honey. 

The beautifully balanced sweetness of honey 

with a hint of campfire smoke on the palate.


WOODEN MOOSE 

CARAMELISED BANANA 

& PEANUT BUTTER RUM 

40% abv 50cl 

Banana and peanut butter – an age-old (and delicious) 

combination. Made with a base of Guyanese rum, 

it’s rich, nutty, and subtly sweet. Peanut butter 

and fried, caramelised banana are centre stage 

(as promised), with a sprinkle of brown sugar 

and cinnamon in support. 

CHACABUCO MALBEC 

14% abv 75cl 

The story started in 1939 with one man 

and his bike, selling wine from its basket 

in Chacabuco, a small town 2 hours from 

Buenos Aires. Chacabuco is ‘donde todo 

empezó’ or ‘where it all began’. 

Haroldo ‘Don Lolo’ Falasco had a dream. 

Today the 4th generation of the Falasco 

family is keeping his legacy alive. 

Plum, damson and black cherry fruits on 

the nose, a smooth palate of soft tannins, 

ripe dark berry and warm spice. Great 

with grilled meats and pasta dishes.


VICTORIA MALAGA 

24 x 330ml 4.8% abv 

Based in beautiful Barcelona, S.A. Damm 

brewery is a leading name in Spanish beer 

and one that is well-loved all over the world. 

Founded in 1876 by August Kuentzmann 

Damm and Joseph Damm, they have since 

built a reputation of brewing amazing beers 

perfect for their Mediterranean environment 

but delicious anywhere in the world. 

Here we have Victoria Malaga, a 

refreshing Spanish beer with balanced 

body and taste. Perfect for drinking at 

any time of day. It is a light, golden 

colour and has a fine, sparkling, white 

head. From the world renown Damm 

Brewery (home of Estrella Damm). 

FREE DAMM 

24 x 330ml 0.0% abv 

Free Damm is the impressive alcohol-free lager beer 

from S.A. Damm, brewed using the same ingredients 

as their usual lager to ensure the same great drinking 

experience. The alcohol is then removed with an 

advanced technique called vacuum distillation until 

the alcohol content is at 0%. Historically vacuum 

distillation can remove some of that authentic beer 

taste, but the guys at Estrella have found a way to 

replace these aromatic components and keep that 

delicious flavour. 

Free Damm is an attractive amber colour with an 

intense yet clean aroma of hops and fresh white 

flowers. On the palate, delicate flavours of grains and 

toast accompany a smooth yet vibrant mouthfeel.


MOMENTO CHENIN BLANC 

WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA 

75cl 13% abv 

Born out of a passion for Mediterranean varieties and 

old-vine fruit, Momento is a solo project from dynamic 

winemaker Marelise Niemann. Marelise earned her stripes 

as the winemaker at Beaumont Family Wines from 2007 

to 2014, sharing cellar space with Crystallum’s Peter- 

Allan Finlayson and Thorne & Daughters’ John Thorne- 

Seccombe. She has also worked in California, Rhône, 

Burgundy and Portugal. Her fascination with Grenache 

was sparked while in Priorat in 2010 where, together with 

winemaker Eben Sadie, she was impressed by the fresh, 

vibrant fruit produced by the old vines. On her return to 

South Africa, she began seeking out parcels of old vine 

Grenache to make her own elegant and soulful wines. 

Aromas of white peach, lemon rind and jasmine 

with wet stone minerality adding freshness and 

focus. Mouth-watering acidity supports a full bodied, 

mouth-coating palate. Notes of brioche and tart 

lemon curd lead to a long, pithy finish. 

MALBICHO MALBEC 

MENDOZA, ARGENTINA 

75cl 14.5% abv 

An estate-bottled Malbec sourced from specially 

selected vineyards in Mendoza and 50% aged in 

French oak. ‘Malbicho’, in Argentine slang, is 

someone different, who does not respect the rules. 

The spirit of this wine is to be unique, different 

and expressive - to challenge the established way 

of doing things. 

A great Argentinian Malbec offering 

aromas of red fruits and plums alongside 

floral and subtle toasty vanilla notes; 

medium-bodied in the mouth, the style 

here is soft, juicy and very well balanced 

with delicious red and dark berried fruits 

to the fore.

Mermaid Gin is hand-crafted on the Isle of Wight using ten 

ethically sourced botanicals. A small batch spirit, it delivers 

a smooth yet complex blend of fresh organic lemon zest 

and peppery gains of paradise, with a hint of sea air from 

locally foraged, fragrant rock samphire – for a refreshing and 

invigorating serve. 

Working with column stills for a smoother spirit, the process is 

tightly controlled capturing only the hearts of each batch – the 

sweet spot of any distillation. This avoids the hasher elements 

found in the heads and tails to create a pure gin that is perfectly 

balanced. 

We preserve the environment of mermaids by supporting 

marine conservation projects and working with Hampshire and 

Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to restore seagrass meadows around 

the Solent. Seagrass captures carbon at a rate 35 times faster 

than the Amazon rainforest and is vital in the fight to reduce 

climate change. Unfortunately, over 92% of seagrass meadows 

in the UK have been lost in the last 100 years which is why we 

are committing to supporting the restoration and protection of 

seagrass around our island home. 

Our bottle is also completely plastic-free, fully recyclable and 

made of 100% natural materials, with the seal around the cork 

being made from corn and potato starch. Our bottle design was 

created to encourage reuse and upcycling with many of our 

customers creating lamps, vases and tumblers.

We speak to the new owners of one of 

Buckinghamshire’s favourite breweries 

about what cask ale looks like in a 

post-covid world, why they would buy 

a brewery during a pandemic, and just 

why they’re so optimistic for the future. 

It’s no secret that cask ale has in recent years 

faced a tough time, with declining customer 

numbers combining with challenges around 

price and hit-and-miss quality on the bar. 

And that’s not to mention the impact on the 

category that the boom in craft keg beer has 

had. 

But, as brothers Joe and Jimmy Brouder of 

Vale Brewery see it, there’s many reasons to be 

optimistic about cask’s place in the post-covid 

world, and what is a true mainstay of British 

pubs. 

“It’s been just over 5 months since we took 

over as new owners at Vale. Some people have 

asked us if we needed our heads examining, 

buying a brewery during the worst crisis the 

industry had ever faced. But for both myself 

and my brother and business partner Jimmy, 

it was the natural next step. We’ve worked 

in the trade all our lives, from running pubs, 

to working for brewers, to running our own 

recruitment and consultancy business for 

drinks brands.” - Joe Brouder 

Founded by brothers Mark and Phil Stevens in 

1995, Vale Brewery cemented its reputation for 

quality and consistency over the years, picking 

up SIBA and CAMRA awards year on year 

across a wide range of styles. 

“When we learned Mark and Phil were 

looking to retire after 25 successful years, we 

leapt at the chance to take the brewery to the 

next stage. We were huge fans of the Vale 

beers, but what was also apparent when we 

visited the brewery was just how wonderful the 

team is. There is an ethos that runs throughout 

the business of going above and beyond for 

customers, working closely with the on-trade, 

and placing real value in the face-to-face 

connection that people gain from the pub. 

We’re both very optimistic about the future. 

We know that customers are looking for 

heritage in the drinks they choose, those with 

a story and strong local ties. And above all 

they want an excellent product made from the 

highest-quality ingredients. Whilst cask has 

had its difficulties in recent years, there is no 

reason it can’t take advantage of these trends 

to bounce back to where it should be. And at 

Vale we’ve got all the above in spades. 

We see it as our job to bring new drinkers into 

cask. We want to help our customers in any 

way we can to educate drinkers on the benefits 

of a style of beer that is unique to Britain 

and that you just can’t get outside of a pub 

environment.”

Vale’s beers are perfectly suited to this mission. 

The mineral content of the water at their rural 

Buckinghamshire location gives all the beers a 

beautifully balanced, clean, and crisp taste. And 

the team make sure at the QC stage of every brew 

that each beer is flavourful but not overwhelming, 

refreshing and drinkable, and accessible to new 

drinkers of cask. 

A rigorous selection of the very best hops and 

malted barley the team can procure from their longstanding 

suppliers ensures quality and consistency 

throughout. Head Brewer Dave Renton has been 

brewing the beers for over 20 years – he knows 

what makes a good pint, and what makes drinkers 

want to have another one. 

Supporting local runs throughout Vale Brewery. Jimmy 

Brouder explains: 

shared our values of providing above and beyond 

care to their customers and suppliers. 

The independent free trade has always been at the 

heart of Vale and that is only set to continue. The 

operators Dayla work with are the kind of operators 

who give us confidence that cask ale has a strong 

future: they care about the quality of their products, 

excellent service, and listening to what their 

customers want. These are the businesses that have 

been so supportive to local and small producers. 

Covid has shown just how vital face-to-face 

interaction is for people’s mental health and 

wellbeing. There’s nowhere better to do that, than 

in the local pub with your friends and family, over 

a pint. And this gives us all real enthusiasm for the 

years ahead.” 

“We’re based just outside the rural village of Brill 

in Buckinghamshire (the inspiration for the hill-top 

village of Bree in Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings). 

Given our location we support local farmers by 

providing the spent grain from our brewery to feed 

their livestock. And we’ve just agreed to supply 

grain and trub (a side product of the brewing 

process) to Ecoinsect, a black-fly larvae farm based 

close by. 

We’re a family-run business, 

and we love working with 

suppliers and customers 

whose name is above the 

door, so to speak. 

This was a huge part of the reason why we reached 

out to Dayla in our first month. Vale is only about 

half an hour from Dayla HQ, and we knew from 

working together previously how much the team

Five Points 

Brewing Co 

To those of you who have had not yet had 

the pleasure of being introduced, please 

say hello to Five Points; an independent 

brewery based in Hackney, London, 

brewing with a commitment to quality 

and the community for nearly a decade 

now. After working with these guys since 

2014 we can safely say they are dear, dear 

friends of us at Dayla and are certified UK 

beer scene legends. 

Five Points’ story begins in 2013, brewing in a railway 

arch underneath Hackney Downs station. Born from a 

passion to champion flavour, provenance, consistency 

and quality, their range of award-winning beers are 

unfiltered and unpasteurised for a better flavour and 

aroma, all inspired by the founders’ passion for both the 

British real ale tradition and the best of the international 

craft beer movement. 

By 2016, they had expanded into the arch next door, and 

were leasing a second site on Mare Street, housing their 

expanding team, warehousing and distribution, plus a coworking 

space with fellow East London businesses and 

charities. But operating in a split site wasn’t ideal, and 

they searched high and low for a new site, and especially 

somewhere in their borough and home of Hackney. 

Finally, in 2021, they were able to take on the whole of 

their second site and relocated the entire brewhouse less 

than a mile down the road to Mare Street – bringing all 

of Five Points’ operations under one roof again. 

Since then, they have created a new Five Points HQ 

in the heart of Hackney, building not just a long-term 

home for their brewery – but excitingly, to finally be able 

to invite the local community to drink tank-fresh Five 

Points beer in Five Points’ own brewery taproom, on site 

right where the beer is brewed. 

A 32 hectolitre brewhouse, packaging plant, laboratory 

and barrel-ageing store are now all based at their new 

combined Brewery & Taproom venue on Mare Street. 

An in-house laboratory includes both microbiological 

and chemical analysis; their dry-hopping investment 

includes in their own Hop Gun technology; and a 

dedicated barrel-ageing arch to focus on an exciting 

barrel and sour programme.

Five Points Taproom 

Launched winter 2021, the Five Points’ showcase 

venue is complete with an indoor taproom bar 

serving tank-fresh pints, mezzanine gallery with 

a view over the brewery, and weekly Saturday 

brewery tours and tastings. (Plus, a large outside 

area for beers outdoors once the spring kicks in!) 

The indoor taproom bar features 18 lines of 

Five Points beers and guest brews, including 6 

stainless-steel tanks which draw the freshest Five 

Points beer available, directly from the brewery. 

Every Thursday and Friday 5pm ’til 7pm, you can 

drink the freshest tank-beer at just £3.50 per pint as 

well. 

Pembury Tavern 

After relaunching in Autumn 2018 with a fresh 

new look, The Pembury Tavern is now under 

the stewardship of The Five Points Brewing 

Company. This historic, legendary boozer stands 

on the landmark ‘five points’ junction from which 

they take their name. With 22 lines of craft beer 

across cask and keg (including weekly guest 

beers), a selection of wines, spirits and soft drinks. 

If you stop by the Taproom or the Pembury 

make sure to check out their in-house pizza 

masters, ACE Pizza, who have served thousands 

of pizzas out of both sites now and as the perfect 

accompaniment to a beery afternoon.

BEST · Five Points Best is a single-hopped Best Bitter, brewed 

with Fuggles hops from Hukins Hops. Refreshing and smooth, 

Best has notes of caramel and biscuit, and a lovely grassy, herbal 

freshness that makes you want to reach for another one. 

Five Points Best celebrates both the history of British brewing and 

the modern craft beer movement. It showcases the Five Points 

take on beer: influenced by the past but brewed very much for the 

present. A UK Beer Scene stalwart.

PALE · Fresh, zesty, aromatic pale ale brewed with malted barley, 

a little wheat, and Amarillo and Citra hops from the West Coast 

of the USA. It’s Five Points’ flagship beer, and its citrus, resinous 

notes make it a perfect easy-drinking beer for any occasion. 

The first beer they ever brewed, Pale proudly represents both 

the British ale tradition and the worldwide craft beer movement, 

resulting in an incredibly drinkable beer with tonnes of flavour.

XPA · A light, sessionable and tropical extra pale ale with 

assertive, zingy hop bitterness and aromas of mango and 

passionfruit. Even paler and hoppier than the legendary Five Points

RAILWAY PORTER · A classic, robust London style porter 

– with a twist. Smooth and full-bodied, bursting with aromas of 

dark, bitter chocolate, and roasted coffee. Brewed with 100% 

British ingredients, East Kent Goldings Hops and an array of seven 

different malts.

JUPA · Hopped with Simcoe in the boil and dry-hopped with 

Citra and Mosaic, JUPA has bold, juicy citrus flavours and a 

tropical fruit character bursting with pineapple, mango and papaya.

backbone, allowing the West Coast hops to shine. A real thirstquencher

Scoop three scoops ice cream

Pour 1 cup Guinness and 1/4

· 2 oz Irish whiskey

Once frozen, add a few golden ice

The black velvet is an interesting mixed drink that 

combines Champagne and dark beer in a single glass. 

One may think this an unlikely combination but it’s 

actually quite good. It has been around for a very long 

time and may even be the original beer mixed drink! 

Supposedly, the black velvet was created by a London 

steward. It was served while the country was in 

mourning over the 1861 death of Queen Victoria’s 

husband, Prince Albert. 

Steps 

· Fill a highball glass halfway with chilled Guinness. 

· Top with chilled Champagne, pouring it over the 

back of a spoon into the glass.

THE BLOCK 

Our love affair for Malbec might 

have been in its infancy but has fast 

become the must-have grape. In the 

off-trade, it was an Argentinean Wine 

brand that landed the pole position 

in November of 2021, now Malbec is 

a leading red grape of choice, and all 

of this excitement sits squarely within 

the region of Argentina. 

With its inky dark colour, mouth 

coating flavours of blackberry, 

plum and black cherry and hints of 

chocolate, violets and sweet tobacco 

(depending on barrel age), it’s a 

deliciously rewarding style of red. 

Malbec’s World Day, rolls towards 

us again and I wonder how we 

create excitement and focus on our 

wine categories within respective 

businesses. We have all been hearing 

and reading and seeing the effects 

of the last number of years where 

customers are drinking less and 

trading up. It makes me realise that 

if our customers are buying better in 

the off-trade we should be mindful of 

where and how we drive costs down 

in search of easy margin. 

Malbec should not be your house 

pour, positioned correctly you will 

deliver stunning wines that enthuse 

and bring customers back for more 

and ultimately deliver confidence in 

your wine offering and all the while 

deliver that necessary margin and 

some. 

Acidity, tannins, balance, authenticity 

- all important when evaluating 

quality. This is not how our customers 

judge though, just as important is how

Seductive & vibrant aromas of plum, 

damson and black cherry fruit on the nose 

lead to a deliciously smooth, mediumweight 

palate with soft tannins, lashings 

of ripe dark-berried fruits and warm spice 

on the finish. Unoaked. 

MALBICHO 

Aromas of red fruits and plums alongside 

floral and subtle, toasty vanilla notes; mediumbodied 

in the mouth, the style here is soft, juicy 

and very well-balanced with delicious red and 

dark-berried fruits to the fore. 50% aged in 

French oak barrels for three months. 

TRUENO 

Complex aromas of red and black fruits on the 

nose such as cherries, plums and raspberries 

are complemented by notes of raisins, chocolate, 

and coffee. Smooth and well-balanced on the 

palate offering ripe, sweet tannins, purity of fruit 

and a lingering finish. Aged in 60% American and 

40% French oak for six months. 

For something a little different we head 

to some of the highest altitude vineyards 

in the world. Agustín Lanús specialises 

in extreme altitude micro-terroirs and 

this wonderful Malbec comes from 

the Calchaqui Valley, Salta utilising 

vineyards at 2,400 m.a.s.l. 

SUNAL ILLOGICO 

Very intense dark violet colour with aromas of black olives, 

rose hips, thyme, black fruits and a delicate finish of cedar 

and oak. The tannins are muscular but very well-integrated 

with a nice natural acidity that gives freshness and elegance.

Strawberry farmer named Christian Zacharias, decided to mix the strawberry puree for his 

ice-cream with contraband British Navy rum. The increasingly tipsy frolickers not only tested 

and perfected the smoothest mix of strawberries, rum, and ice, but they also utterly destroyed 

Mrs. Zacharias’ strawberry patch! 

It’s no mistake that we’ve crammed the freshest Strawberry puree, Caribbean Rum and Lime 

Juice into our recyclable pouch, keeping our version of this classic cocktail as real as the
