HEALTH & BEAUTY Insta v reality The pros and cons of pictures with Chris Moody of Moodyhair There’s an old saying that ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ and in hairdressing, pictures can help portray what new style you’re looking to emulate. But photos can also bring many pitfalls. By all means, search your social media and Pinterest boards for images of the things you like. Photographs are a great source of inspiration: they help clients and stylists communicate what is meant by ‘textured’, ‘ashen’, ‘warm’ or ‘tousled’. But make no mistake - carefully placed lights or a well thought out filter can totally transform that natural, warm blonde into a super icy silver that was never there in the first place. The problem these days is that our phones and social media feeds are filled with completely unrealistic images of over-enhanced, filtered and even fake pictures of super glamorous hairstyles and colours that bear no resemblance to what can be achieved in real life. Many of us here at Moodyhair have examples on our phones of how lighting and filters can completely transform the same head into two completely different colour images. The most important thing is to use images as way of explaining what it is you like, rather than expecting a complete replica of that image on your hair. There are lots of factors to consider as to whether it will be achievable. Hair type and texture, previous hair colour and condition, the styling of the hair, not to mention the lighting under which the image was captured and, of course, any filters that may have been applied - all these things will be different in every case and will likely prevent stylists getting an exact copy of what you see on your own hair. It’s important to always book a consultation with a professional stylist. In most salons, consultations from 15-30 minutes are usually free. If hair condition is a concern, ask your stylist about ‘bonders’ such as Innoluxe, Olaplex, or K18; these will be an additional cost but work wonders when lightening hair. And be sure that whatever you do with transformational hair colour you always perform a skin allergy test before any colours touch your skin.
