Step one should be working out what<br />
the priorities are for everyone who is<br />
going to live in the new home and create<br />
a wish list. <strong>The</strong>re are several ways to do<br />
this so everyone feels involved. <strong>Star</strong>t with<br />
a list of every room, including outdoor<br />
areas, and then talk through what the<br />
priorities would be in that area.<br />
If you both want an island or a<br />
peninsula in the kitchen also think<br />
about the function - to add extra work<br />
space, provide storage or a breakfast bar?<br />
This will influence the size and shape<br />
and whether you need to add electrical<br />
outlets.<br />
Within your wish lists there will be<br />
items that are not necessarily roombased<br />
but part of the whole home, for<br />
example, storage, heating, electrical<br />
outlets or lighting.<br />
Is there a way for storage to take up<br />
less space and make it more accessible?<br />

walk in wardrobes, a full height broom<br />
cupboard in the laundry, window seats,<br />
built-in shelving or entertainment area,<br />
pull-out pantry, shoe racks, drawers or<br />

think about before your build. Gone are<br />
the days when one plug is each room was<br />
enough. While increasing the number of<br />
electrical outlets may seem like a small<br />
thing, but will add flexibility when you<br />
start placing your furniture around your<br />
home.<br />
Lighting is another essential thing to<br />
discuss before the build. A skylight at the<br />
front entrance can add both natural light<br />
and drama. A skylight in the bedroom<br />
means you can look up at the stars. All<br />
can add a huge impact to the way you<br />
live.<br />
Don’t forget the outdoor area. You<br />
might want space for a trampoline or<br />
play area or prefer an outdoor kitchen<br />
or dining area. Think about providing<br />
shelter from the sun or wind and what<br />
your priorities would be – a bar, pizza<br />
oven, fire, television, dining table or<br />
another seating area?<br />
