1 Introduction
Siliconcoach Timewarp is an interactive, skill learning tool. It accelerates skill development by
providing you with your own instant replay system, much like you see on TV sports
broadcasts. It allows the actions you have just recorded to be reviewed while still recording
what is happening live. You can also play back exemplar clips from file all right next to the
'live' feed.
1.1 Overview
People improve faster with feedback and your visual system is one of the best feedback systems
you have.
Timewarp provides athletes with a simple visual feedback tool that enhances the learning process.
Timewarp works by continuously recording video to hard disk while at the same time allowing you to
move backwards and forwards within the captured video footage. It also lets you view the footage
using a time delay (Warp) that is set by the user. In this regard, you can perform an action and then
view the video without having to go back through the footage.
Introduction
Key features:
Sections of interest can be repeatedly reviewed in real time or frame by frame.
© 2010 Siliconcoach Ltd
You can draw on the screen to highlight points of interest. Save your drawings for reuse in
subsequent sessions.
Tag sections of the timeline for easy review and export. You can even use it as a simple
match analysis system.
Play exemplar clips from files that illustrate the techniques you wish to model.
Project the full screen mode onto a big screen at an event for easy viewing and increased
spectator interest.
As video is captured to hard disk rather than to RAM, the duration of video capture is only restricted
by your hard disk size, and it is possible to continuously record long sessions. As an approximate
guide you need about 5 GB of free hard disk space per hour of footage captured.
1.2 What's New in V4
You can even use Timew arp 4 as a simple match analysis system.
Timewarp 4 has been built from the ground up with none of the original code from Timewarp 3 used
at all. This gave us the flexibility to add the features we knew worked.
The new features are:
NEW Thumbnail timeline. Timewarp 4 features a new thumbnail timeline to make it simpler and
quicker to find a key moment in time.
7
8 TimeWarp 4 User Manual
NEW Project window. Timewarp 4 introduces Timewarp projects: With Timewarp projects you can
now save the whole timeline complete with tags for later edit, review or export. Being able to save
the whole timeline removes the pressure to do all the analysis right there and then. This frees you up
to concentrate on your athlete.
NEW Tagging interface. Tagging is a way of capturing segments of video for future review or
analysis. Tagging in Timewarp 4 is now much simpler with our new tagging interface. PLUS you are
now able to adjust your lead in and out times for tags already made.
Tagging turns Timewarp from a simple video recorder to a powerful coaching and feedback tool.
NEW File Playback Interface. In Timewarp 4, you can now play a wide variety of video file formats
right next to your 'live' video. One way people learn is, by mimicking movement and this is the ideal
tool to facilitate this.
...and more
Supports new generation USB and Hard-drive video camera's.
Is Windows 7 compatible.
Improved drawing tools.
Improved full screen layout.
System Setup
Part
II
12 TimeWarp 4 User Manual
2 System Setup
'System Setup' takes you through the basic steps necessary to set-up Siliconcoach Timewarp.
Timewarp is very easy to use and within minutes you will be up and running. To get started, all you
need to do is:
1. Activate the software
2. Configure your system
If you already know how to do this, then check out the "What's new" and "How do I...?" sections .
2.1 System Compatibility
Timewarp makes use of the latest in video and computer technology but will still work on most
Windows PC computers dated 2008 or newer.
Timewarp System Requirements include:
Operating system: Windows XP SP2 or later, Vista, Win 7 (32 and 64 bit).
A dual-core processor.
Screen Resolution: minimum of 1024 x 768. A bigger screen will be better however a very
big screen may make it run slower.
At least 10 GB of free disk space. Note that the more free disk space you have, the
longer you can record for. Timewarp uses about 5 GB of space per house of recording.
RAM: Depends on operating system but a minimum 1 GB of RAM but we recommend
that you have at least 2GB.
Camera: Mini DV digital video camera connected via Firewire (IEEE 1394) or a camera
connected using the A/V out plug then into a USB converter.
2.2 Activating your Software
The Activation/Registration system in Timewarp 4 now offers you a whole new level of flexibility.
If you are connected to the internet you can now check your license back up onto our web based
License Server, go to another computer, load Timewarp 4 on that second computer and then
download your license to activate that second copy.
In effect you could have copies of Timewarp at work and at home, and then move the license
between both places (but not at the same time!).
Getting your software to work is a 2 stage process, first you will Activate the software then
Register yourself as a user.
Step 1: Activation
If the software is not already on the
computer, install it from the downloaded
file.
Now start the application from the icon on
the desktop.
© 2010 Siliconcoach Ltd
Step 2: Activation
The Activation Manager will also open.
Select the 'Activate Timewarp 4' option
and click CONTINUE.
Step 3: Activation
Enter the 18 digit Activation Code you
were sent by Siliconcoach. This will
probably have come in an email with the
software download link.
Press the ACTIVATE button to complete
this part. Please wait at least 20- 30
seconds as the system is accessing the
internet.
System Setup
13
You will have probably downloaded the installation from
from a link sent to you by Siliconcoach. You must double
click on this downloaded installer file to actually install the
software.
The first time you install Timewarp 4 on a computer it will
be in Demo mode. This will give you 45 days of fully
functioning software before it must be activated.
You can manually access the Activation Manager at any
time by clicking on Windows START then ALL
PROGRAMS, then TIMEWARP 4, then ACTIVATION
MANAGER.
If this is the first time that you’ve run Timewarp 4 on this
PC then you will have begun a 45 day trial. The trial is fully
functional and you can choose to just evaluate the
software by selecting “Trial Timewarp 4 for XX days” and
then clicking “Continue”. Each time the application runs it
will ask you if you’d like to Activate the application until
you do Activate the application.
14 TimeWarp 4 User Manual
Step 5 : Registration
After the Activation process is complete
(please wait 20-30 seconds) you will
immediately be asked to complete the
Registration process.
This is very important as it allows you to
manage your license(s) and is how we
contact you for support issues.
Press OK on this screen to move to the
compulsory registration step.
Step 6: Registration
If you have never registered before
using this system (i.e. most new
Timewarp 4 users), press the REGISTER
NOW button and follow the registration
prompts on the screen that appears.
If you have registered on this system
before, enter your username (email) and
password in to lower boxes and click the
REGISTER button.
Step 7: Registration
Fill in all your details on this screen
including a username, your email and you
also need to make up a password.
Press the CONTINUE button to continue.
It is important that you use your real
email as it is how we contact you for
support and how you move your
If you are Activating a computer that you have activated
before, the number will be loaded for you automatically.
If for some reason the system cannot register over the
internet, first make sure you are actually accessing the
internet by going to www.google.com. If that is OK but
Timewarp does not activate, then choose the 'Import
Activation Certificate' option.
It is strongly recommended that you have an internet
connection to manage your license and receive free
updates to the software. However if you do not have an
internet connection then select 'Manually activate using
the phone or email'. Note that manual activation will make
moving your license to another PC much more difficult and
is therefore not recommended.
license to another computer.
Step 8
Once you have registered you will get the
Successful Activation window as shown
on the right.
Click EXIT to finish the process.
Step 9
If the Timewarp software does not start
automatically, start the application from
the icon on the desktop.
Step 10
2.3 Configuring your System
Before you use the software you need to make sure your hardware is correctly set up. The image
below show a typical configuration.
Important Points:
You can get your video source by using a MiniDV camera and a Firewire cable but you must
have a Firewire port in your computer. Many computers do not have inbuilt Firewire but you
can add a port using an Express Card. You can learn all about Firewire at http://www.
siliconcoach.com/support/?page_id=372 .
Most cameras nowadays do not have Firewire capabilities so you will need to use the A/V-out
plug in your camera and then connect that into a Video to USB converter. NOTE: you will
probably have to load software for the converter so make sure you follow their instructions
carefully.
Always use a tripod of some sort with your camera
Built-in Web cam's are not good to use, they are generally too slow, too small, distort the
image (fisheye) or cause crashes. Further they don't have flexibility for correct positioning like
a stand alone camera does.
3 Your First Session: Quickstart
This section is all about getting going in the software as quickly as possible.
3.1 Setting up your gear
Timewarp is essentially a delayed playback system for learning skills so it needs a live camera feed
for the initial capture (although you can save a video capture as a project and review it later).
Make sure it is all plugged in and turned on as shown below.
3.2 Setting up your Project
The screen has been divided into 4 clear steps, namely
1. Select your device and its
settings.
2. Confirming you can see a
video.
3. Setting the Warp (delay, you
can change this later).
4. Pressing START to start
recording.
You will need:
A MiniDV camera (uses a small tape).
A Firewire cable.
A Firewire port in your computer or a plugin
card that has Firewire.
MiniDV cameras are not made anymore.
if you do not have one already you will
need to use the USB option below.
You will need:
A camcorder that has a A/V out plug (this
is most camcorders).
A composite cable (yellow, red, white
plugs at one end at least).
A Video to USB converter to take the A/V
output from the camera and convert it into
a USB signal.
4 How Do I ....
In this section you will find a series of topics on using the software and also what to do when things
go wrong.
4.1 Prepare for recording?
As usual, good preparation will save a lot of stress later on. Once you have captured video there is
very little that can easily be done to to improve it, you need to capture good video to start with.
You can find many useful resources at the:
Timewarp Product Support Centre at http://www.siliconcoach.com/support/?page_id=342.
You should focus on:
o Step 3 (Setting up your hardware)
o Step 4 (Getting good video).
Best Practice for Videoing area on the Siliconcoach website at http://www.siliconcoach.com/
support/?page_id=189.
NOTE: You can now capture using Video to USB converter devices. For more information see "How
do I find the best USB converter?"
4.2 Set up to capture video?
The Setup Screen is where you prepare for video capture or where you reload a previous Timewarp
Project.
You can learn about the Project screen at "How do I revisit a Project"
The Live screen has been divided into 4 clear steps, namely
a) Selecting the camera.
b) Confirming you can see a
video.
c) Setting the Warp (delay).
d) Pressing START to start
recording.
a. Selecting the Camera
Selecting the camera and its corresponding settings is the only part that needs more explanation.
First, you need to select a device from the pull down menu. Depending on the type of device there
may be more settings you need to set. Some devices like Video to USB converters (eg Dazzle DVC
100) have a huge number of settings, other devices (eg MiniDV cameras) have no settings. We have
tried to filter out irrelevant settings but we cannot control them all as it is different for every device.
© 2010 Siliconcoach Ltd
The basic rules are:
© 2010 Siliconcoach Ltd
How Do I ....
If you are using a Pal* or NTSC* MiniDV camera (uses a small tape) then there are no
settings.
If you are using a Pal camera with a Video to USB Converter then look for YUY2 at 720 x 576
at 25 Hz.
If you are using a NTSC camera with a Video to USB Converter then look for YUY2 at 720 x
480 at 30 Hz (or 29.97 Hz).
If you can't find those then look for 640 x 480 and 25 Hz (Pal) or 30Hz (NTSC).
Anything less than 640 x 480 will result in a bad video image and pixelation (looks 'blocky').
Anything less than 25 Hz will result in video that appears to stutter or be jerky.
Web cams (inbuilt or external) may or may not work but they do not provide a good image or a
fast enough shutter so the video will look blurred and sluggish.
I can't see a video image
If you don't see any video image in Step 2 then try a different setting and wait about 20 seconds for a
refresh. Try a few settings.
If you still don't see a video image or don't see any Devices at all then go to "How do I get my
camera to work?"
Currently the Audio Settings are disabled so sound will not be captured with the video.
*Pal is mainly in New Zealand, Australia, UK, parts of Europe and others. NTSC is mainly in USA,
Canada, Japan and others.
4.3 Change where my videos are stored?
You can change where the video files are saved.
To get to this Options screen select Tools from the top menu.
23
24 TimeWarp 4 User Manual
4.4 Find the best camera
With the demise of MiniDV camcorders around the world in early 2010 we have had to change the
way we get live video feeds into Timewarp 4.
A few years ago it was all MiniDV connected to the computer via Firewire (Option 1), now we also
use Video to USB converters (Option 2) which now means you can connect to any camera that has
a A/V output.
Also see 'How do I find the best USB converter?'
This new USB method dramatically increases the number of camera you can use. You can use any
camera with a A/V output but you need to add a USB converter into the system.
For those that still have MiniDV camcorders they will still work fine (providing you have the
appropriate Firewire port in your computer and the correct cable).
This image show what
recommended by
Siliconcoach to work with
Timewarp 4.
Which Video to USB Converter should get?
There are a lot of video converters available on the market and they are all slightly different so
Siliconcoach has tested many and recommended a few.
NOTE: Because of the ways different manufacturers convert the video
signal to USB, Siliconcoach will only support the following models.
Device
Dazzle DVD Recorder Plus (DVC 100)
Hauppauge USB Live 2
Honestech VHS to DVD 4.0
4.6 Get my camera to work
Timewarp is essentially a delayed playback system for learning skills so it needs a live camera feed
Therefore setting up you camera correctly is essential. This section focuses on trouble shooting
camera problems.
1. Review System Compatibility
2. Review How do I set up to capture video
3. Review Configuring your System
4. Check your hardware.
How Do I ....
o Review How do I find the best camera and How do I find the best USB Converter
o Check all connections into the camera, Video to USB converter and into the
computer.
o Check your camera is turned on and set to capture not replay.
o Make sure you can see an image in the cameras viewfinder.
5. Check if your device is in the Timewarp list.
o Yes I can see it: Move on.
o No I can't see it: A 'device' (eg a camera or a Video to USB Converter) must be
detected by Windows before Timewarp can see it. Therefore you need to check you
installed the drivers for it as per the manufacturers instructions. This is especially
relevant with Video to USB converters, they usually need the software to be loaded
before the device is plugged in. If you plug the device in before the manufacturers
software is loaded it will load a Windows driver (software) and this will probably stop it
from working. If you have done this you must uninstall any drivers for it and install the
ones from the manufacturer. once the driver is correctly installed as per
manufacturer's instructions restart Timewarp.
6. Set your Video Settings: Each camera or Video to USB Converter will come with a unique set
of video settings, you will need to choose the right one but fortunately there are only a few
options that will work properly. If you are using the recommended Video to USB converters
then these rules should apply.
o If you are using a Pal camera (NZ, AUS, UK, etc) then use something that looks like
'YUY2 720 x 576 at 25 Hz'.
o If you are using a NTSC camera (USA, Canada, Japan, etc) then use something that
looks like 'YUY2 720 x 480 at 30 (29.97). Hz'
NOTE:
o If your device is listed in the Timewarp pull down but you have no image in the Preview
4.7 Revisit a Project?
screen, the most common cause is the wrong format (eg PAL vs NTSC).
o If your video has horizontal lines all over when you move in front of the camera, the
most common cause is the wrong setting, ie it is 640 when is should be 720.
The video file plus any tags and drawings you have created can now all be saved as a Timewarp
Project and then imported back into the software at a later time for more review and analysis.
Any projects you have saved will be listed in the Project tab in the Setup screen. To review one of
4.15 Activate using a web browser?
Sometimes the direct activation method will not work because of Proxy settings or Firewalls.
Always try the direct Activation option first but if it continues to fail then you might try this web
browser option.
In this option the Activation Manager creates an Installation ID for you and you enter that, along with
your License Number/Activation Code (sent to you via email), into the web page.
Based on this ID and code the web page generates an Activation Certificate (a very long number)
that you then copy back into the Activation Manager to complete the Activation process.
Step 1
Review Activating your Software before
starting this option
Step 2
Open the Activation Manager as outlined
in Step 1 above.
Select the 'Activate Timewarp 4' option
and click CONTINUE.
33
34 TimeWarp 4 User Manual
Step 3
Enter the 18 digit Activation Code you
were sent by Siliconcoach. This will
probably have come in an email with the
software download link.
Now press the IMPORT ACTIVATION
CERTIFICATE link.
Step 4
Your Installation ID will be generated for
you automatically.
You will need to copy the Installation ID
and License Number into the web
browser page.
First, copy the Installation ID by pressing
the copy button as shown.
New press the "1. Use the browser to ..."
link to open the correct web page.
Step 5
On the web page that opens, LEFT
mouse click in the Installation ID box and
then RIGHT mouse click and select
PASTE.
Switch back to the Activation Manager
and copy the License Number by
pressing the lower Copy button.
click in the License Number box and then
RIGHT mouse click and select PASTE.
Read the Terms and Conditions and tick
the box if you want to proceed.
Press GENERATE UNLOCK CODE/
CERTIFICATE to proceed.
Step 6
The next web page you will be taken to is
the Registration page.
If you have registered before, enter your
details now but for most users this will be
their first time so you need to press
REGISTER NOW button.
Step 7
Fill in all your details on the next screen
that appears including a username, your
email and you also need to make up a
password.
Press the INSERT button to continue.
It is important that you use your real
email as it is how we contact you for
support and how you move your
license to another computer.
Step 8
An Activation/Unlocking Certificate is
generated for you. You need to copy this
number back into the Activation Manger.
Although there is a Copy to Clipboard
button, it does not seem to work reliably
in some browsers so it is better to do the
following:
a) LEFT mouse click in the area of all
the numbers.
b) Press the 'Ctrl' and 'A' keys at the
same time to select all of the
numbers.
c) Press the 'Ctrl' and 'C' keys at the
same time to copy the selection.
Step 9
You have now generated an Activation/
Unlocking Certificate that you need to put
back into the Activation Manager.
To do this you can:
Press the Paste button as shown,
or
LEFT mouse click in the Unlock
space and then RIGHT mouse click
and select PASTE.
4.16 Activate manually without Internet?
© 2010 Siliconcoach Ltd
How Do I ....
It is a lot easier to activate the software using the internet options (Direct or Web browser) but if an
internet based method is not an option, you can activate using email or phone.
NOTE: In reality the unlock code you will be given is nearly 200 characters long so it is better to use
email rather than the phone so you can copy and paste the numbers.
In this option the Activation Manager creates an Installation ID for you and you send that, along with
your License Number/Activation Code (the one sent to you via email), to Siliconcoach support staff (
support@siliconcoach.com).
The Siliconcoach support staff will send back an unlock code that you paste into the Activation
Manager to complete the Activation process.
Step 1
Review Activating your Software before
starting this option
Step 2
Open the Activation Manager as outlined
in Step 1 above.
Select the 'Activate Timewarp 4' option
and click CONTINUE.
Step 3
Click on the "Manually activate using the
phone or email" link.
37
38 TimeWarp 4 User Manual
Step 4
This screen gives you an Installation ID
number.
Send this ID number, along with your
License Number, (the one Siliconcoach
emailed to you) to:
support@siliconcoach.com
+64 3479 2577 (New Zealand)
Step 5
Siliconcoach will respond with an unlock
code of about 200 characters.
Copy this number from the email and
paste it into the Unlock Code space.
Now click on the ACTIVATE button.
Step 6
This screen will confirm your Activation
You do not need to put your 18 digit License Number in
here but it is a good idea because it will be remembered
for the future.
4.17 Deactivate my software normally?
© 2010 Siliconcoach Ltd
How Do I ....
Use the following steps to deactivate Timewarp 4 and check your license back up onto our Web
based License Server. Use this option if you want to move your license to another computer.
NOTE: If the Activation Manager fails to connect to the internet after a few attempts, you can try
deactivating using a web browser.
Step 1
Start the Activation Manager by clicking
Windows START then ALL PROGRAMS,
then TIMEWARP 4, then ACTIVATION
MANAGER.
Step 2
The Activation Manager will start and your
license Code should be entered
automatically. It is this license you will
be checking back into the Web based
License Server so as to be able to use it
somewhere else at a later stage.
Select the YES option then press
CONTINUE to complete the process.
39

Step 3
Completion will be confirmed with this
Window.
Click OK to finish
4.18 Deactivate using a Web browser
If your License Number is not inserted automatically, you
need to enter it manually. This can happen if you have
done a manual or Web Browseractivation.
Now the copy of Timewarp 4 will not work on this machine.
To re-activate it on this or any other machine follow the
Activation instructions.
Always try to use the normal deactivation process first, however the Activation Manager can fail if
your Firewall or and Proxy Server prevents a connection to our server being established. If this
happens here are some tips to help you:
o If prompted by your antivirus or firewall software to unblock ‘activationmanager.exe’ please do
so.
o If you do not get this option and the process is blocked, get your network administrator to allow
access to ‘activationmanager.exe’.
o If you know that you use a proxy server and know what the settings are then you can enter
them into the Activation Manager by clicking on the Proxy Settings button and then placing a
check mark in Use proxy server. Now enter your proxy server address and port number and
then click OK. These settings will be stored for future use.
If you still can't get the Activation Manager to connect to our server then use the option below. The
following steps will deactivate Timewarp 4 and check your license back up onto our Web based
License Server using a Web browser. You may want to do this when you decide to move your
license to another computer.
WARNING, READ THIS FIRST: YOU MAY LOSE YOUR LICENSE
PERMANENTLY.
Don’t use this option unless you fully understand how do do it.
If you don't work through the process correctly you can loose your license.
We recommend you only use this option if you can't get the Activation
Manager to connect via the Web normally or you are directed to by a
Siliconcoach user support representative.
Step 1
Start the Activation Manager by clicking
© 2010 Siliconcoach Ltd
Windows START then ALL PROGRAMS,
then TIMEWARP 4, then ACTIVATION
MANAGER.
Step 2
The Activation manager will start. Select
the MANUAL DE-ACTIVATION option.
Step 3
Press the "2. Use the browser to
return ..." link.
You are doing this to check that you can
access the correct web site. If the
correct web page does not appear
then do not continue!
The correct web page should look like the
image in Step 8 below except it will not
have any numbers in it yet.
Step 4
Once you have confirmed you have the
correct Web page open in your browser,
click on the EXPORT button in the
Activation Manager
have to purchase a new one.
If you are at all uncertain, press NO and
contact support@siliconcoach.com.
Step 6
This screen gives you more information
and instructions.
Read it and click OK to continue.
How Do I ....
Use this option if there is absolutely no way you can connect you computer to the internet.
Even so you will still need email access on some computer so you can copy long numbers to the
Timewarp 4's computer Activation Manager.
You will need to contact support and be taken through the process step buy step.
4.20 Move my software?
The Activation/Registration system in Timewarp 4 offers you a whole new level of flexibility.
If you are connected to the internet you can now check your license back up onto our web based
License Server, go to another computer, load Timewarp 4 on that second computer and then
download your license to activate that second copy. In effect you could have copies of Timewarp 4
at work and at home, and then check in and check out the license so as to have a system useable
in both places (but not at the same time!).
When you want to use Timewarp on Computer 1.
-Load, activate and use Timewarp 4 on Computer 1.
When you want to use Timewarp on Computer 2.
-Deactivate Timewarp on Computer 1 and check the license up to the Web based License
Server (Step A).
-Load, activate and use Timewarp on Computer 2 (Step B). NOTE: Now you can’t use it on
Computer 1.
When you want to go back to using Computer 1.
-Deactivate the Timewarp on Computer 2 and check the license up to the Web based
License Server (Step C).
-Activate the copy of Timewarp on Computer 1 (Step D). NOTE. You do not need to reload
the software.
When you want to go back to using Computer 2.
-Repeat Step 3 above but deactivate Computer 1 then activate on Computer 2.
There are some technical restrictions however. They are:
You must have all machines connected to the internet during activation/deactivation.
Some Firewalls and Proxy Server’s can prevent this process.
o If prompted by your antivirus or firewall software to unblock ‘activationmanager.exe’ please do
so.
o If you do not get this option and the process is blocked, get your network administrator to allow
access to ‘activationmanager.exe’.
o If you know that you use a proxy server and know what the settings are then you can enter
them into the activation manager by clicking on the Proxy Settings button and then placing a
check mark in Use proxy server. Now enter your proxy server address and port number and
then click OK. These settings will be stored for future use.
