Support for insulating, heating your home If your home is cold and damp in the winter months you could be eligible for a grant to assist with insulation and heater costs. The Government’s Warmer Kiwi Homes programme is run by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA). The programme aims to improve the health and wellbeing of communities by helping lower income homeowners to afford better insulation and heating. In some communities there are even top ups available from community organisations. As at September 2021, the programme had retrofitted more than 75,000 homes throughout New Zealand to make them warmer during the cold winter months since the scheme was launched in 2018. ‘‘Lowincome families, young children and older Kiwis are especially vulnerable to the impacts of living in cold, damp homes so I’m proud this government scheme is making such a difference to their quality of life, with reduced risk of respiratory illness, doctor’s visits and hospitalisations,’’ Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods says. ‘‘Warmer Kiwi Homes also stimulates job growth and is good for the economy. ‘‘Eightsix companies are currently contracted to deliver Warmer Kiwi Homes, with over 81 percent of the insulation products they install manufactured in New Zealand.’’ Grants through EECA can cover up to 80% of the total cost of ceiling and underfloor insulation and up to 80% of the cost of an approved heater. This could be aheat pump or an efficient wood /pellet burner for the main living area, with heater grants are capped at $3000 including GST.
