E-scooters to Remain Riding in the District
E-scooters are staying in the Waimakariri District
with the Council granting aone year permit to
e-scooter operator Flamingo Scooters, following
asuccessful trial that has seen more than 20,000
rides across the District.
Flamingo can operate between 200 and 300
commercial e-scooters in Rangiora, Woodend,
Kaiapoi and Pegasus. Itwill also be responsible
for covering all infrastructure and operational
costs, and will contribute apermit fee tocover
any necessary maintenance –asaresult of any
scooter misuse or vandalism.
“We’ve been closely monitoring the operation and
usage of scooters in the District over the last
five months,” says Vanessa Thompson, Council
Business and Centres Advisor.
“The trial has provided us with alarge amount of
data and community feedback to help our Council
make aconsidered decision about the future of
commercial e-scooters in Waimakariri.”
During the trial, 2,500 riders havehopped on ascooter
–travellingaround37,000km across the District.
The Council asked the community for their
feedback, with close to 60 percent in favour
of commercial scooters continuing to be an
alternative transport solution in the District.
“With on-going parking limitations and aneed to
reduce our environmental impact, e-scooters are
aviable alternative for some in our community to
get where they need to go without relying on a
car,” says Vanessa.
There were some complaints received during the
trial, such as scooters being parked incorrectly
and blocking footpaths or driveways. Flamingo
contacted riders to educate them on correct
parking and arranged the immediate relocation
of nuisance scooters, or disabled user accounts
where necessary.
Councilstaffhaveworked with Flamingo to putmore
safety measuresinplace, including more education
forridersaroundcorrect parking andsafety,the
continued useofgeo-fencing restrictions,and
additional no-riding zones in some areaslike parks
andreserves.
