Home Plan of the Week
Informal Sierra offers panoramic views
By Associated Designs
Basically a hexagon with
wings, the Sierra is bright, open
and informal. Its wealth of windows
allows full appreciation of a
panoramic view to the rear.
Families that prefer an informal
home, where living spaces are open
and unhindered by walls, will enjoy
this plan. Group living spaces cluster
together in the
great room where the
vaulted ceiling begins
high and slopes up to
a lofty central peak.
Three sections of the
rear wall are mostly
glass. Arched clerestory
windows crown
six banks of multipaned
windows, providing
ample natural
light to the great
room. Two sets are
actually French
doors, which swing
open to access the
wide patio that
spans the entire
rear facade.
The Lumsden and
District Volunteer
Fire Department
put on a fundraiser with
dinner, silent auction, raffles
galore, games and Celtic
music! It was a resounding
success with 200 people in
attendance, all ready to have
some fun in support of a
great cause.
The Lumsden and District
Volunteer Fire Department
recently initiated a fundraising
campaign to acquire
a new rapid response rescue
unit to complement its
existing fleet and equipment. As Fire Chief
Jeff Carey shared in his remarks at the event,
improving the team’s rapid response capability
will allow for trained firefighters to
quickly reach an accident or fire scene, giving
the crew time to assess the situation and plan
how to best use the rest of the firefighters
when they arrive. In any emergency, time
is one of the most important tools at their
disposal. Early intervention and action saves
lives - the lives of neighbours, friends, families
- people you may know. The Fire Department
and other first responders they routinely
work with play a huge (and often unsung) role
in keeping this community safe for everyone.
Over the next three years, the Fire Department
has set an ambitious goal of raising
$250,000 to acquire a new rapid response
rescue truck outfitted with the equipment it
needs to provide its invaluable service to the
Lumsden area. While it is noteworthy that the
Town and RM of Lumsden provide ongoing
financial support to the Fire Department
and have allocated capital funds for regular
replacement of major equipment, it is recognized
that they also have other financial obligations
within the community. Obtaining the
specialized rapid response rescue unit within
the next few years is an additional need identified
by the Fire Department, and one which
the members are committed to specifically
fundraise for.
As one of several fundraising events and
activities planned over the next few years, the
St. Patrick’s Day celebration was a great start
to the formal campaign. Chief Carey extended
appreciation to the many businesses and individuals
who generously supported the night’s
event with a wide selection of donated raffle
prizes and auction items. As he pointed out,
without them, the evening would not have
been as successful nor nearly as much fun!
The Fire Department is also seeking corporate
sponsorships and will be pursuing
government or other grants that may be available.
One of the first major donors supporting
the rapid response rescue unit initiative is K
+ S Potash Canada, Bethune mine, who has
generously donated $7,500 to the cause. Chief
Carey acknowledged this grant to the crowd
and extended appreciation on behalf of all of
the Lumsden firefighters for this early support
and the progress it represents in achieving
their overall target!
Watch for announcements of future events
and activities hosted by the Lumsden and
District Volunteer Fire Department. Current
plans include a similar Oktoberfest evening in
the fall and a few smaller initiatives throughout
the summer. You won’t want to miss the
next opportunity to have a great time and
maybe help save a life while you’re at it!
