ISSUE<br />
There was a lack <strong>of</strong> culturally relevant opportunities for<br />
learning <strong>and</strong> building relationships for the roughly 100<br />
African-American <strong>and</strong> Latino male students at Springfield<br />
High School. Parents <strong>of</strong> these youth were seeking academic<br />
<strong>and</strong> social supports for their teens, but to no avail. The school<br />
knew something must be done to bridge the gap in academic<br />
achievement for those students while also building on the<br />
core values <strong>of</strong> education to <strong>of</strong>fer diversity-rich activities <strong>and</strong><br />
increase parent involvement relative to collegiate engagement.<br />

SOLUTION<br />
Springfield High School launched the<br />
Focus 100 program with <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong><br />
African American Initiative (AAI) as<br />
the main sponsor. Various community<br />
partners joined AAI in recruiting African-<br />
American male volunteers who served as<br />
mentors to the students <strong>and</strong> supported<br />
the annual fall Black Male Conference.<br />

OUTCOME<br />
After just one academic school year,<br />
students, parents, teachers, <strong>and</strong><br />
administrators saw a tremendous<br />
increase in student responsibility,<br />
knowledge <strong>of</strong> higher education,<br />
<strong>and</strong> classroom discipline. After<br />
two academic years, student<br />
test scores increased.<br />
