ISSUE
According to Education Week, one-third of all
dropouts are lost in ninth grade because they
do not receive adequate support or guidance
during the transition to high school. Locally, the
graduation rate at Toledo Public Schools is 63
percent. We know this is unsustainable for our
community. When graduation rates improve,
crime decreases and financial stability, healthy
behaviors, and economic opportunity improves.
SOLUTION
United Way AmeriCorps members
are serving as Graduation Coaches,
providing one-on-one support to and
interventions for kids who face risk
factors for not graduating. These trained
Coaches serve students in eighth and
ninth grade, helping them through
the transition to high school – one
of the last critical tipping points.
PARTNERS
OUTCOME
35 coaches are serving 501
students in Toledo Public Schools.
Though this is the first year of
implementation, we’re already
seeing great results like as of
March 2012, 49 percent of all
students served have increased
attendance by 50 percent.
