Toy Train <strong>Auction</strong> Lot Descriptions February, 2011 STOUT AUCTIONS 1024 Meccano and AC Gilbert Boltless Builder set No. 5 from the Gilbert Archives. Produced in 1937, this set was a prototype for a construction toy that was never produced. All writing on the box lid is factory. This was the largest set of the three proposed Boltless Builders, and the only set to contain an electric motor. Contents are C9-10. Box lid has some chipping of the faux wood at the corners of the lid and some sun fading to the lower part of the box . Box is C7+. 1025 Prewar Lionel O gauge No. 265E steam locomotive and No. 265WX tender with whistle, original boxes only. Loco box is ink stamped BL and tender box is ink stamped X BLUE. Tender box is partially missing inner coupler protection flaps, O/ W C6-7. Loco box has insert and looks C8 with a couple small punctures to a front panel. 1026 Another wonderful Gilbert historic item. This is the brass whistle from the Gilbert factory located at One Erector Square in New Haven. Whistle was made by Powell’s which is stamped in valve casting. Whistle is missing some valve parts. Bell measures four inches in diameter and is fifteen inches tall. Very neat item! 1027 Postwar Lionel O gauge No. 2145WS freight train outfit. 2411 flatcar w/logs, 2460 operating work crane, and 2357 SP type caboose. Trains look C7-8. Some train boxes have tape repairs. Boxes are square, clean and solid. RCS in OB w/ controller, connecting ties in OB, SP pellets in OB, instructions booklets and sheets. Set box looks C7-8. 1028 A neat lot of Gilbert Engineering Institute items. Includes are a lapel pin, carded pin back with pin, and diploma of merit with authentic AC Gilbert signature. These items date from the mid teen’s and are in very nice condition. See photos. 1029 Postwar Lionel O gauge No. 2143WS freight train outfit in original boxes with components. Set is composed of No. 671 loco, No. 2671W tender w/whistle, 2461 transformer car w/one decal, 2460 operating work crane 3459 automatic dumping ore car, 2420 searchlight wrecking car. Trains look C6-7. Inner boxes show light wear, loco box is missing end flap, etc. Boxes are clean, bright, square and solid. Set box looks C7. Instructions sheets, instructions booklet, and other paper. SP bottle w/pellets, wooden smoke tamper, RCS w/controller in OB, connecting ties in OB, No. 206 bag of artificial coal included. 1030 1927 Gilbert Erector letter signed by Herbert Trisch. Subject is updating of Erector parts cabinet. Letter is framed with some creases, but no major tears. 1031 Prewar Lionel outfit No. 239E for O gauge track in original boxes. Trains are, 260-E steam loco, 260T tender, 812 dark green gondola, 813 orange cattle car (OB marked for yellow), 814 yellow boxcar (OB marked for Ivory), 815 light green oil car, 817 red caboose (OB marked for P. Blue). Trains look much nicer C6-7. Car boxes have tape repairs and missing flaps. Loco and tender boxes look C8-9. Set box lid has split corners. Box is otherwise clean and solid with bright labels. Curved and straight track, connecting ties in OB, 3 in One oil bottle with cork lid with paper literature, OTC Lockon and instructions book included. 1032 Original 1914 Gilbert Erector photos showing the 1914 Erector line. Eight black and white photographs showing various sets from the top. Shows how the sets were organized. These photographs are an invaluable aid in researching the history of Erector. 1033 Prewar Lionel O gauge No. 869W freight train outfit with remote control whistle in original boxes. Trains are 225 loco, 2235W whistle tender, two 2652 gondolas, 3651 remote control lumber car, 2757 Pennsylvania caboose. Tender is missing coupler key. Trains otherwise look C6-7. Two 160 bins, RCS in OB w/controller, connecting ties, straight and curved track, No. 167 whistle controller, included. Loco box is missing end flaps. Tender box is an over stamp. 3651 is ink stamped O. Boxes are cleaner, brighter, square and solid. Set box has fantastic looking end label, C7. Set included a No. 165 magnetic crane in OB w/controller, inserts and the incredibly rare and hard to find 182-22 steel blanks cloth bag with blanks. Crane looks C7-8, controller needs rewired. Box looks C7-8. 1034 Seven authentic pieces of correspondence between AC Gilbert and Walter Bradley ( An inventor ) regarding Bradly’s windmill toy. Includes four letters between both parties, two contracts and one card from Bradley stating when he presented the original idea. One authentic AC Gilbert signature on the letters. Letters are in great condition with normal mailing folds, one letter does have two very light paperclip rust stains on the paper.
Toy Train <strong>Auction</strong> Lot Descriptions February, 2011 STOUT AUCTIONS 1035 Postwar Lionel No. 463W O gauge track freight outfit with built in whistle, set box with some components, only. Set box is missing a small piece of outer layers of cardboard. Set box is NOT printed with 463W-2, but with 1075E. Box is otherwise C7. Components are RCS w/controller in OB, No. 167 whistle controller in OB, connecting ties in OB, straight and curved track. Set contained the following trains: 224 steam loco, 2466W whistle tender, 2458 automobile car, 2452 gondola, 2555 Sunoco tank, 2457 caboose. 1036 Five original pieces of AC Gilbert Company correspondence. These letters date between 1915 and 1935. Subject matter ranges from hardware store Erector sales to the expected increase in sales of the No. 7 1/2 set in 1935. Included in these letters are one original Thompson signature and one original Trisch signature. 1915 letter has some wear on the right edge of the page and 1935 letter has some light stains in the upper left corner. Otherwise letter show normal mailing folds but are in good condition. 1037 Postwar Lionel O gauge No 2139W freight train outfit set box with some components. Set box looks C7. Straight and curved track, RCS w/controller in OB and instructions booklet included. Set was composed of No. 2332 Pennsylvania five-stripe GG-1, 2458 automobile boxcar, 3451 operating log car, 2456 LV hopper, 2357 SP type caboose. 1038 A near perfect autographed copy of the autobiography “The Man Who Lives in Paradise” by Gilbert with McClintock. Published in 1954 this copy looks unread with only very light corner wear on the spine of the dust jacket. AC Gilbert autograph just inside the front cover. 1039 Prewar Lionel No. 295W O gauge passenger train outfit set box Set box has weak flap folds, light wear to corners, some light staining. Box is C7 in shape. Set contained: 265E/265W; 619, 617, 618. Included is straight and curved track, No. 66 whistle controller in OB, connecting ties in OB, 66 instructions sheet and instructions booklet. 1040 This notebook was owned by A J McGrail, AC Gilbert’s top salesman for the New England states. This notebook includes all his 1948 sales activities. Condition is not near as important as the wealth of information this notebook contains about Gilbert products, including accounts, line improvements, how each line was sold in groups, company memos and more. A very neat piece to even flip through, tons of great Gilbert information for those who are interested in the day to day details of how Gilbert ran. Additional notes on this item can be found in the notes section of this catalog. 1041 Prewar Lionel O gauge No. 146W passenger train outfit set box with some components. Set box has weak flap folds, looks C7. Straight and curved track, RCS w/controller in OB, No. 88 controller in OB, connecting ties in OB, and instructions booklet. Set would have contained the following trains: 225/2245W; 2602, 2600, 2601. 1042 1953 AC Gilbert sales presentation. This presentation also came from AJ McGrail (See lot 1040). Includes neat section on American Flyer trains, including a neat black and white photo detailing a Flyer loco mechanism. Includes price lists, Flyer catalog, toy section and also includes a section on both Flyer and Erector store displays. A few pages are loose from the binding. 1043 Postwar Lionel O gauge No. 2332 Pennsylvania black GG-1 electric locomotive in original box with insert and original instructions sheet. Train looks C6-7. Box has wear to tape, C7 in shape. 1044 A.C. Gilbert’s personal hard bound collection of “Erector Tips” and “toy Tips” magazines. This book includes volume I through volume VI No.11 ( October 1914 through November 1918. Thirty eight issues in all. Gilbert wrote and edited “Toy Tips” himself and this book is filled with his personal notes and workings. 1045 Prewar Lionel O gauge No. 755W The Milwaukee Road Hiawatha passenger train in original boxes with components. Set is composed of; No. 250-E streamlined steam locomotive, 250WX tender with whistle, 782 combine, 783 coach, 784 observation. Trains look C6-7. 782 combine may have a repainted/replaced diecast roof section as the paint is lighter and does not match rest of car. Castings are excellent with no distortion. Some wheels have light casting fatigue. Inner boxes look C7-9. Set box looks lower C7. Curved and straight 072 track, 166 whistle controller in OB, instructions sheet and instructions booklet included. 1046 Binder of Gilbert 1920 appliance line with factory photos. Seventeen pages with thirty eight actual photos of the Polar Cub line of fans, vibrators, and several other surprising products. Many pictures of the store displays. This is an invaluable asset in researching the history of Gilbert products. This was a personal refrence book from AC Gilbert’s office in Erector Square.
