playingnetball at Allenton School so he
tookthe initiativeand started the firstall
boys netball teaminAshburton.
‘‘I justwanted more boys to play with,’’
Finlaysaid, ‘‘so Igot someofmyfriends
involved, andtheygot someof theirfriends
involvedand that’s how aall boys team
started.’’
Thenetball is six­a­side, the boyshave
seven in theirteam and play all girl teams
on Saturday mornings.
‘‘People always think girls areonlygood
at netball but wewanttoshowboys can be
good at netballtoo,’’hesaid.
Fellowteammate Lachie said he liked
netball because ‘‘youget to move around
and trynew positions.’’ Finlay likes
shooting.
Theteamiscalled the Allenton AllBoys.

The heaviest, biggest and
weirdest pumpkins grown
from Mitre 10 Mega
Ashburton seedlings will
be underscrutiny this
weekend.
Thegiantpumpkin
growing contest willbe
judged instore on May 14.

Scammell said Mitre 10
Megaresurrectedthe
pumpkin growing contests
of many yearsago, and
brought it back as a‘‘fun
competition as so many
familiesare getting into
growing their ownveges.’’
Staff gaveaway 40
AtlanticGiant variety of
pumpkinseedlings in
November last year to
growers of all ages, and
feedbacksofar had beena
mixedbag of success.
Thevariety was
renowned for producing
the largestpumpkins, but
somegrowers had
reportednoluck to giant,
to justplain weird, she
said.
‘‘(It) willbevery
interesting tosee what has
become of the seedlings
since leaving the store in
November.’’ The official
weigh­in runs from8am
until11am,with the
prizegiving at 2pm.

sportssothemplayingnetball reallyhelps
theirrugby skills as well, justthe handeye
co­ordination ,kidsshould be given
exposuretoas many sports as possible.’’
