Picture Book Author - Amelia McInerney<br />
Since making a career change, Amelia McInerney has published five<br />
picture books with Scholastic Australia and Allen and Unwin and has<br />
more books coming. She is the spouse of a RAAF logistician.<br />
Seven years ago, I got the sudden notion that I wanted to write picture books.<br />
This came out of left field, given I was a medical sonographer. I’d just had my<br />
third baby and knew that a lot of women re-evaluate their career when they<br />
have kids, but I couldn’t stop dreaming about it. At the time, I was living in the<br />
US with my military husband on his USAF exchange.<br />
Because I didn’t know many people and was busy caring for my three young<br />
children, it suited me to begin my writing life in relative solitude. I eagerly<br />
plunged into a new world of (free) self-education. I was surprised to find that<br />
the internet was brimming with everything a new writer needs to learn. I was<br />
soon working on manuscripts and when we got back to Australia, I joined a<br />
critique group and started attending kidlit events which is how I came to meet<br />
my future publishers and literary agent. <strong>The</strong> hard work was paying off and my<br />
dream was coming true!<br />
I’m writing full-time now, and still surprised at this<br />
unusual turn of events in my life. I feel like walking<br />
proof that none of us know what’s in store for us.<br />
Although there are some downsides to moving around<br />
a lot, I think all the moving stopped me falling into a rut<br />
and gave me the freedom to reassess what I wanted to<br />
do. Also, because I felt I had made sacrifices in my<br />
personal and professional life due to all the<br />
relocations, I felt justified in giving myself permission to<br />
pursue something for me. So, if you have a dream or<br />
want to try out something new, I say go for it!<br />
You never know what’s around the corner.<br />

where we sell handmade hats, bags and accessories<br />
based on our customer’s fabric selections. My husband<br />
also creates woodworked items including grazing boards,<br />
bowls, bottle openers and cheese knives. Please come<br />

Catherine has been running her custom cake and cookie<br />
business in Tindal since their relocation in December<br />
2021.With a fantastic eye for detail and loads of<br />

Devilish Delights Katherine<br />
My first two books came out in 2019.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Book Chook is about a panicky chicken who has an existential crisis when<br />
he realises he’s not real but just a drawing. And Bad Crab is a near-wordless<br />
book about a pinchy crab who learns to keep their claws to themselves. <strong>The</strong><br />
Book Chook was a Notable Book in the CBCA Book of the Year awards and<br />
also shortlisted for another prestigious Book of the Year award.<br />
In 2021, I published three more funny, rhyming picture books.<br />
Mary had a Little Lamb: What REALLY Happened is an action-packed nursery<br />
rhyme mash-up that reveals that Mary was actually a brave and clever hero<br />
who saved the town’s missing animals from the Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly,<br />
including her BFF Bo Peep’s lost sheep.<br />
Who Fed Zed? is an off-the-wall story about a goldfish and every<br />
line in it rhymes with ‘Zed’.<br />
Although it’s funny, it’s a good cautionary tale if any little ones or<br />
their friends have food allergies. My daughter’s nut allergy<br />
inspired this zany tale. Spoiler: Zed makes it.<br />
My Bird, Bertie is about two introverts (a bear and a bird) on a<br />
car trip, and what happens when their boisterous friends, Giggling<br />
Gertie, Silly Billy Tilly and Jiggy Wiggle Jack pile in. Haven’t we all<br />
been on a car trip like that?!<br />
