A Note from the Director
Elizabeth Goldman
Library Services Director
June 1 brings the end of the school year and
the launch of Burbank Public Library’s annual
Summer Reading Program. Along with the
reading program, Library staff have been working
diligently to plan a great slate of events for the
summer, from individual activities to interactive
sessions, with learning and fun for all ages.
At its core, summer reading has one goal: To
keep students actively engaged with reading
between school years, thus avoiding the “summer slide,” which can
counteract school-year learning gains and which disproportionately
impacts children from lower income households. But developing a
love of reading that lasts year-round benefits everyone, from children
to adults, from all walks of life.
Burbank’s Summer Reading Program is built on the simple premise that
by reading each and every day, we will improve ourselves and our
community. Participants don’t need to worry about a minimum
number of words or minutes or about the many aspects of our busy
lives that get in the way of reading. As a lifelong reader myself, I have
read every day since my childhood. Some days I only make it through a
few pages before I fall asleep, but the ritual grounds me. Reading helps
keep me connected to stories larger than my own and builds my
empathy and understanding.
Whether you are already a big reader or not, I encourage you and your
family to use the next few months to explore all the Library has to offer.
You can read – or listen to – whatever draws you, and as a reward, we’ll
give you even more books. Check out some fun programs, try out new
technology, or maybe pick up a title out of your comfort zone. Happy
reading!
