A Message From The President...

President
Hello Friends!
As summer approaches, my
term as your president comes
to a close. I have been proud
to serve on the board for the
past two years as president,
and for the two years prior as
treasurer. But all good things
must end. I will be leaving the board because I am
moving out of the area. I will remain a friend of the
Library.
I have enjoyed serving on the board, because
I love books, and I love public libraries. The
Friends mission is not only supporting the library
financially, but also promoting the library to the
community.
I have learned that the library is about so much
more than books. The Burbank Public Library offers
so many programs for adults and children of all
ages. The library is a safe space for all, and a great
way to confidentially connect with a social worker.
The library provides access to technology, and job
and career advice. The library promotes literacy
and lifelong learning. And for those who just aren’t
that interested in reading, the library has a wide
variety of movie DVD’s and music CD’s. There really
is something for everyone!
The friends have helped support the library
financially in many ways, through our book sales
and the operation of our used bookstores. Our
support of the library, especially in these difficult
times of book banning, censorship, and defunding
libraries, remains our paramount concern. Your
commitment to the Friends ensures that we
can continue to have a library for everyone in
our community. I appreciate your support, and
encourage you to become more involved, by
volunteering or attending meetings. Thank you
for being a Friend!

2023 is shaping up to be a year of major
challenges to public libraries and other
institutions that provide access to information,
knowledge, and ideas. In recent months, the
American Library Association and PEN America,
a group dedicated to free expression, have
compiled increasingly concerning information
about the number of attempts to restrict
access to information via book bans, laws
criminalizing librarians and teachers, and
threats of violence.
Libraries, at their core, provide access to books
and information. But it is about so much more
than just having shelves full of items and
computers connected to the internet. Societies
that have free libraries – and research-based
educational institutions and independent
media – are societies that have made a
statement about valuing democracy. After
all, full participation in democracy requires
people to have knowledge, to be able to
access and express ideas, and to think
critically.
Burbank, like all public libraries, protects
and promotes intellectual freedom as one
of our core values. This means you can
access materials on a variety of viewpoints
through our collection, and it means we
will preserve your privacy as you do so.
Library staff take our responsibility to craft
a thoughtful collection seriously, following
a policy for selection and de-selection of
Library materials that is available to review
on our website, burbanklibrary.org.
As we head into Summer Reading season,
consider that our year-round efforts to
help children and adults learn to read
and to build reading as a habit are not
just about entertainment, relaxation,
or a healthy lifestyle. Reading exposes
you to worlds and viewpoints beyond
your own. It provides a mechanism for
discussion of difficult subject matter. And
making it part of your life gives you the
tools you need to participate fully in our
society. The Friends of the Library are
an important component of the Library
being able to carry out this mission.

Donations
Tributes&
A gift to the Friends of the Burbank Public
Library’s Tribute Program is the perfect way to
honor or remember a special person in your
life. Celebrate a birth, marriage, anniversary,
or other special event. Donate in memory of
a loved one’s passing or make the Friends the
recipient in lieu of gifts or flowers. Tributes
may be made by an individual, a group, or a
company.
Since its inception in 1980, the Friends of the
Burbank Public Library have raised over $3
million to provide funding for the Library.
How can you help the Friends support our
Library? Everyone who shops at our bookstores
and booksales, renews their annual Friends’
memberships, or donates through tributes all
make a difference.
Consider becoming a Legacy Donor. Name
the Friends of the Burbank Public Library as a
beneficiary in your will or other estate plans
to ensure our Library is enjoyed by many
generations to come.
If you wish to contribute in honor or in memory

Celebrate the 100 th Anniversary
of the Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros.
2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the
two major film studios located
here in Burbank. The films of both companies
have played a huge role in creating and
defining American popular culture. Through
the years, many of our friends and relatives in
Burbank have been a part of their legendary
productions and technical contributions to
filmmaking.
Two live library events in June will celebrate the
work of these studios and their place in the life
of this city. Author Bruce C. Steele and a panel
of his fellow creators will present The Story
of Disney: 100 Years of Wonder, on Saturday,
June 10 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Copies of the
book will be available for sale from the Friends
of the Burbank Public Library. A book signing
will follow the panel discussion.
Join us for an inside look at Warner Bros. 100
Years of Storytelling on Wednesday, June 21,
from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. George Feltenstein, the
preeminent authority on Warner Bros. history,
will talk about how the studio led the industry
in exploring new subjects and innovations in
filmmaking. Copies of Warner Bros.: 100 Years
of Storytelling by Mark A. Vieira will by available
for sale from the Friends of the Burbank Public
Library.
Both events will be held at the Buena Vista Library.
