A Message From The President...

As summer draws to a close
and kids return to school, the
Friends of the Burbank Public
Library prepares for another year
of support for our community’s
greatest treasure. But first, I
want to give a big shout-out
to our past President, Tami
Schmidt. When the Friends’ Board was short a
couple of members, Tami stepped up and filled a
vacancy for Treasurer. She successfully served a term
in that position, then took on the two-year term as
President. Then Tami moved out of the area at the
end of her term. We will miss her.
Poet, author, and philosopher Kahlil Gibran
famously said, “You give but little when you give
of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself
that you truly give.” Tami Schmidt, as well as the
other volunteers on the Friends of the Library
Board of Directors, give of themselves to keep this
organization running smoothly. The Friends also
want to welcome Pat McCall to the Board as the
new Treasurer. She is enthusiastic about her new
responsibility and is a welcome addition to the
Friends. Thank you to all our volunteers who give
their time and efforts to benefit our Library. You are
greatly appreciated!
Now, be sure to mark you calendars. Our Fall Pop-
Up Booksale is scheduled for Saturday, October 7,
from 12-4 PM. You never know what delights you
might discover there.
If you have an interest in volunteering at the
library, may I urge you to contact the Burbank
Volunteer Program at Joslyn Center. Register with
them and get on the list to help us out. We LOVE
our volunteers.

Thanks to support from the Friends of the
Library, it’s been another successful summer
filled with opportunities to read, learn, and
strengthen community ties. The annual
Summer Reading Program drew hundreds of
participants, who built their lifelong habit of
reading every day in order to earn free books
and other prizes provided by the Friends.
It’s always wonderful to see kids, teen, and
adults excited to read even more as a reward
for reading!
The summer was also filled with special
programs, including events to celebrate
the 100 th anniversaries of Burbank’s two
biggest employers, Disney and Warner Bros.
Elementary students explored computer
science in a Girls Who Code club; teens
learned creative writing and heard from
creative industry professionals; and all
ages enjoyed entertainment and outdoor
activities.
A grant from the California State Library
allowed staff to expand a program called
“Lunch at the Library” this year. While
Burbank Public Library does not provide
meals – a need that is covered by the
Burbank Unified School District – we did
partner with both BUSD and the Boys &
Girls Club to bring summer reading and
enrichment activities to summer meal
sites. This year’s new program with the
Boys & Girls Club was particularly effective
in reaching kids who are not already
Library users.
As we head into the new school year
and fall, we look forward to building on
these successes and partnerships. A new
targeted program for job seekers, Job
Connect Plus, launches in September,
and staff will fan out to schools to get
the word out about the BConnectED
program that gives students automatic
Library card access. Programs on various
topics for all ages are being planned, and
new books arrive weekly. If you haven’t

A gift to the Friends of the Burbank Public
Library’s Tribute Program is the perfect way to
honor or remember a special person in your life.
Celebrate a birth, marriage, anniversary, or other
special event. Donate in memory of a loved one’s
passing or make the Friends the recipient in lieu
of gifts or flowers. Tributes may be made by an
individual, a group, or a company.
Since its inception in 1980, the Friends of the
Burbank Public Library have raised over $3
million to provide funding for the Library. How
can you help the Friends support our Library?
Everyone who shops at our bookstores and
booksales, renews their annual Friends’
memberships, or donates through tributes all
make a difference.
Consider becoming a Legacy Donor. Name
the Friends of the Burbank Public Library as a
beneficiary in your will or other estate plans
to ensure our Library is enjoyed by many
generations to come.
If you wish to contribute in honor or in
memory of an individual, complete the form

Celebrating
AT THE LIBRARY
Thanks to the Friends of the Library’s support,
community members discovered a world of
creativity and imagination during the summer
reading promotion.
Dewey welcomes youngsters
to the Library’s Summer program kickoff.
Families flocked to the library for creative programs
like the History Makers.
Fun Art programs such as the Pinch Clay Pot activity
kept school-age kids engaged this summer.
It was standing room only at the June book event celebrating the publication of
The Story of Disney: 100 Years of Wonder.
A panel of Disney archivists shared anecdotes from this commemorative book that highlights
a century of entertainment.
The Friends of the Library sold copies of The Story of Disney: 100 Years of Wonder at the
event. The books quickly sold out!
