NaNoWriMo Write-Ins 

Get Started Writing That Novel 

6:30 - 8:30 pm Tuesdays, November 7, 14, 21 & 28 Buena Vista Branch Library 

Registration required — The Quill & Pint Writers’ Group will host four in-person write-ins during 

the month of November. They are focused gatherings for writing but they also include writing tips, 

writing games, and prizes! Let’s get that novel out of your brain and onto the page! 

What is NaNoWriMo? National Novel Writing Month, is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach 

to creative writing. On November 1, participants begin working toward the goal of writing 

a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 pm on November 30. Valuing enthusiasm, determination, 

and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel.

Library Services Director 

For the past few years, City staff have been hard 

at work developing a plan for a new Central Library 

that balances the clear need for a replacement 

building with the many competing demands for 

limited City funds. In October, the path toward a 

new Central Library became clearer when the City 

was awarded a $9.95 million grant for the building 

from the California State Library. 

The current Central Library opened in May 1963, 

when John F. Kennedy was US President and the Beach Boys’ 

Surfin’ USA was a hot new single. It has served the community 

well over the years but can no longer meet the needs of today’s 

Library users. A new 65,000 square foot library is proposed as 

part of a redevelopment of the Burbank Civic Center, which will 

also include affordable and workforce housing, new open space, 

additional City office space, and parking. 

In 2022, the California State Legislature approved the first new 

funding in almost two decades for public library buildings, many 

of which throughout the state are outdated and in disrepair like 

the Burbank Central Library. In the current round of the Building 

Forward Library Facilities Improvement Program, Burbank was 

one of 34 projects selected out of nearly 150 applicants. Grant 

funding will specifically support features to ensure the new 

building is accessible, sustainable, and resilient. 

Planning for the new Central Library and Civic Center is ongoing, 

with a target opening date in 2028. Project updates are available

The Golden Screen: The Movies that Made Asian America

Registration required — The past decade has been a groundbreaking era for Asian-centric 

storytelling in Hollywood films, from the mainstream success of Crazy Rich Asians to the 

amazing achievements of Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. Cultural critic Jeff Yang talks 

with documentary filmmaker Renee Tajima-Peña about his new book The Golden Screen, 

an unprecedented history and celebration of Asian Americans on the big screen.

and the Burbank Central Library first opened its doors. 

This library has had an extraordinary run, but it’s time for a new one. 

The Burbank City Council is considering construction of a new Central Library as 

part of the Burbank Civic Center Project. If you’d like to see this happen, let the

The Warner Brothers: Imagining America

and film producter and historian George Feltenstein. Explore how the Warner brothers,
