Baby Party! is an informal place to read, play, explore and

building skills to the test in a library LEGO® building 

contest! The Library will provide all the LEGO bricks.

between Guggenheim Fellow Robin D.G. Kelley and San Francisco Poet Laureate

arrange text and images in your slide, use the desiger tool 

to decorate slides and make them look more professional. 

Silent Reading Club - Bring your own book!

Registration required — Silent Reading Club brings readers together for an evening of focused 

reading time and opportunities to socialize. Bring a book, grab a cup of tea, chat with a neighbor, 

and find a comfy spot to settle in for a block of silent reading time. At the end of the reading block, 

attendees can socialize or continue reading.

the country. The week celebrates the ways in which 

libraries build community, open doors, and help people 

explore the world through stories.

These include: 

• Monday, April 8, is Right to Read Day. This more recent addition recognizes 

the growth in challenges to free and open access to materials on all topics. 

From 2020 to 2023, the number of attempts to ban materials at public and 

school libraries grew from 223 to 4,240, driven by political divisions across 

the country. Right to Read Day celebrates libraries as places that fight 

against censorship and restricted access. 

• Tuesday, April 9, is National Library Workers Day. The libraries collections, 

programs, and services would not be possible without the employees who 

put such careful thought and effort into making Burbank’s libraries the 

libraries that the people of Burbank need. Much of the staff’s work is behind 

the scenes and unheralded, but it’s value is clear in your everyday experience. 

• Wednesday, April 10, is National Library Outreach Day. While we do not 

have a bookmobile in Burbank, we work through community partners to 

get books, programs, and services into the hands of people where they are, 

whether schools, residences, or other settings. 

• Thursday, April 11, is Take Action for Libraries Day, encouraging people to 

advocate for their library at the local, state, or national level. This may be 

an opportunity to contact the Burbank City Council about the value you 

see in a new Central Library or to write to your state or federal officials 

encouraging them to support free access to information and reading. 

Burbank Public Library was established in 1913, just two years after the 

City was founded. It’s easy to take for granted what has always been 

there, well-resourced and freely available. National Library Week offers 

a reminder to celebrate our good fortune and yet also make an effort to 

ensure what we have enjoyed is there for future generations.
