Act 2 • Scene 3

FRIAR: Be plain, my son.

You are speaking in riddles,

And I don’t understand you.

ROMEO: Here is the plain truth.

My heart’s dear love is set

On the fair daughter of rich Capulet.

As I love her, so she also loves me.

We want to be married! I’ll tell you later

The story of when, where, and how we met,

And wooed, and made exchange of vow.

But for now, I ask—indeed, I pray—

That you agree to marry us today.

FRIAR: Holy Saint Francis! What a change!

Is Rosaline, whom you did love so dear,

So soon forgotten?

Young men’s love, then, lies

Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.

How many tears washed your cheeks

For Rosaline! How much salt water

Thrown away in waste,

To season love, that you never taste!

The sun has not yet cleared your sighs away.

Your old groans still ring in my old ears.

Look, here on your cheek is the stain

Of an old tear that is not washed off yet.

How are you so changed?

ROMEO: You often scolded me for loving Rosaline.

You told me to bury my love.
