but you would quarrel over that? Your

head is as full of quarrels as an egg is full

of meat. And yet your head has been

beaten like an egg for quarreling. You

have quarreled with a man for coughing

in the street because he woke up your

dog. You quarreled with a tailor for

wearing his new coat before Easter. And

yet you tell me not to quarrel!

BENVOLIO: Ha! If I quarreled as much as you,

my life would not last another hour!

MERCUTIO: You said it, not I!

BENVOLIO: By my head, here come the Capulets.

MERCUTIO: By my heel, I do not care.

(Tybalt and others enter.)

TYBALT (to his friends): Stay close, for I will

speak to them.

(to Benvolio and Mercutio): Gentlemen, good

day. A word with one of you?

MERCUTIO: Just a word? How about a word and

a fight?

TYBALT: You shall find me ready for that, sir, if

you give me a reason.

MERCUTIO: Can’t you find a reason without my

giving you one?

TYBALT: Mercutio, you are one of Romeo’s

band—
