Act 2 • Scene 5

ROMEO: One more thing, good nurse.

Wait behind that wall over there.

My servant will meet you within the hour.

He will bring a rope ladder.

Hide it in the orchard, near Juliet’s window.

Tonight I will use it to climb up to her room.

Keep our secret, and I’ll reward you.

NURSE: Bless you, sir. But listen,

Can your servant keep a secret?

Have you ever heard the saying,

“Two may keep a secret, if one is dead”?

ROMEO: My servant is as true as steel.

NURSE: Well, sir, my lady is very sweet. There’s

a count in town, named Paris. He wants

to marry Juliet himself. But she would

rather see a toad than see him. When I

tell her that Paris is a better man than

you, she turns pale.

ROMEO: My regards to your lady.

NURSE: Yes, a thousand times.

(Romeo and Nurse exit.)

Scene 5

(Capulet’s orchard. Juliet enters.)

JULIET: It was nine when the nurse left.

She said she’d return in half an hour.
