Act 2 • Scene 4

MERCUTIO: So? Any man who can write may

answer a letter.

BENVOLIO: I mean, Romeo will answer by

accepting the dare.

MERCUTIO: Poor Romeo. He is already dead!

Stabbed in the eye with Rosaline’s looks,

Shot through the ear with a love song,

Pierced in the heart with Cupid’s arrow.

Is he strong enough to meet Tybalt?

BENVOLIO: Why, what is Tybalt?

MERCUTIO: A bigger threat than you know.

He is an expert with the sword.

His timing, pace, and rhythm are perfect.

He has gone to the best fencing schools

And sliced many a button off a silk shirt.

(Romeo enters.)

BENVOLIO: Here comes Romeo!

MERCUTIO: Good morning, Romeo!

You got away from us last night.

ROMEO: Good morning to you both.

I’m sorry for last night.

I had some important business to see to.

But it’s all taken care of now.

MERCUTIO: Who’s that coming up the street?

(Juliet’s Nurse enters.)

NURSE: Good morning, gentlemen.
