The associate vicar's letter
DEAR FRIENDS,
Community is something I think about and talk about a lot. In my school
assemblies at Charvil Piggott and Sonning Primary we often celebrate their
communities of pupils, staff, families and governors. Similarly at Reading Blue
Coat I am forever talking about the importance of community and how much I
love being a part of such a vibrant and welcoming school. I am, of course, a part
of the church community, both locally in our parish of Charvil, Sonning and
Sonning Eye, and the wider church; this diocese, the Church of England and the
church throughout the world in all its diversity.
Last, but definitely not least, is my own community here in Charvil,
especially my own street which came together in great force for the Jubilee
celebrations, as I’m sure many of yours did too! From the street lunch, the
games and singing, to the evening BBQ, it was great to mix with old friends
and new. While there was a lot of light hearted fun and laughter, there were
more serious conversations too and a genuine sense of care and concern for one
another. My street is most certainly a community I am pleased to be a part of!
DEVELOPING COMMUNITIES
You will all have your own communities of which you are a part of, and I
encourage you all, as I have just done, to reflect on the different communities
that you are in. It could be where you live, or work. It could be a hobby or
worshipping community. It may be an ‘in person’ community or an online
community. We exist in relationship with one another and communities build,
develop and grow all the time, sometimes in obvious places and other times in
unexpected circumstances.
In the book of Acts in the Bible we read about the early church and how
communities grew and developed. We learn about how they supported one
another and shared resources. For Christians these accounts remind us of the
importance of sharing the Gospel message and of being in fellowship with
one another, but I believe that we can all learn from their example. Aspects
of community that they demonstrate include helping one another, offering
hospitality, supporting the poor and vulnerable, acts of compassion and love;
things that we can translate into our own contexts and communities today.
Of course we won’t always get it right and we will all have more that we
can do to nurture and support the communities of which we are a part of, but
rejoicing in the positives and being honest about where we can improve is how
we learn and grow.
NURTURING GIVING HEARTS
I am going to end this letter with a quote from Henri Nouwen, a famous
20th century Catholic priest and theologian, which talks about community in a
way that I think is thought provoking and profound.
Community is the fruit of our capacity to make the interests of others more
important than our own. The question, therefore, is not:
‘How can we make community?'
'But, how can we develop and nurture giving hearts?’
Henri Nouwen
Community shouldn’t be an optional extra and it shouldn’t be a chore, but
rather a natural response to living our lives in relationship with one another.
I hope this quote inspires you, as it does me, and helps us all to identify what
we’re doing well and challenges us as to what we can do more.
With love and prayers
Kate
PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS — 1
A service that will long be remembered
Indy Biddulph
Indy Biddulph
Almost 300 members of St Andrew's Church,
visitors and dignitaries came together on
Sunday 5 June to celebrate Her Majesty The
Queen's 70 glorious years of service. Local
scouting and armed services organisations
were represented by the flag bearers and
the church choir was augmented by eight
professional church singers. Lord Carey of
Clifton, who was the 103rd Archbishop of
Canterbury, preached, and Theresa May MP
who was Prime Minister from 2016-2019
read the second lesson. It was a service that
will long be remembered and you will find
more details about this and the Jubilee
Indy Biddulph weekend on the following pages.
Three firsts for Bertie the Buggy!
Indy Biddulph
Indy Biddulph
Indy Biddulph
It was a day for first time experiences! When Theresa May MP unveiled and officially named Bertie the Buggy, she
admitted that she had been asked to unveil many things in her political career, but this was the first buggy! Likewise,
when Lord Carey stepped up to dedicate Bertie for service in the church, it was the first buggy he had been asked
to bless. Then James, a well known and loved member of St Andrew's was taken on the first official ride around the
churchyard by Rev Jamie. Bertie, was donated to St Andrew's by Christina Goodacre in memory of her late husband,
Peter, and by Janet Robson, in thanksgiving for the work of the church. (They are pictured above centre). Bertie will
be used to help members and visitors with mobility difficulties to travel more easily between the disabled car park,
Church and The Ark. Bertie was named in honour of The Queen's father, King George VI who was known by that name.

St Andrew's Youth
STAY in May Half Term
In the week leading up to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee
we were able to organise a few super fun activities for the
local youth. On Monday 30 May we went Go-Karting, on
Tuesday 31 May we played a STAY versus SYNC youth club
rematch in football and on the Wednesday organised a
drop-in sports session in Charvil. To finish the week, a
few members of STAY youth club (Amelia, Sophia, Abbey,
Phoebe, Josh, Martha & Annabelle) helped prepare our
Simpson’s of Sonning scarecrow for the amazing Sonning
Scarecrow Festival (see pages 20-21).
STAY on
Friday
Numbers at STAY
on Friday have
continued to reach
a high of 62 youth
each week and the
format of open
games, sports,
jump rope, four
square volleyball,
badminton, hama beads, Xbox, pool, table tennis, cup pong,
cup stacking, baking yummy treats and the final thought,
continued throughout May. A particular highlight was
losing a game to a young person and the forfeit was to sing a
nursery rhyme! Here’s me singing ‘I’m a little teapot’.
STAY in Schools
Our successful weekly schools work continues with
mentoring and assemblies at both senior schools, plus
assemblies at the two primary schools. These have included
the themes: Jesus feeding the 5,000 and St Augustine. The
children and teenagers loved playing a 'share or steal' game
at one of the assemblies. Two volunteers each have a share
and steal card. The prize is a large bar of chocolate. They take
it in turns to convince the other that they’ll play their share
card because if they do then they both share the prize. But, if
one person plays their steal card and the other shares, then
the stealer gets the whole thing. The twist is that if both steal
then neither win anything. Out of all six assemblies only one
student played their steal card! All the others shared. The
point being that Jesus’ heart is that we share what we have,
however little, like the boy in the story in Matthew 14.
STAY Detached Project
The weekly detached project is a joy to my week. With
Mark and Ethan we have weekly conversations with
young people about exams, summer plans and how they’re
coping with life, and we’ve had parents popping along
to chat as well. We have given out lemonade and played
games such as keepy uppies, ping pong and top trumps.
STAY on
Sunday
Our group on a
Sunday has again
seen a consistent
number of about
12 young people
each time. We
continued looking
at relationships
and how we, as
Christians, behave
in relationships. In
May we looked at our relationship with humour and how we
use humour in our lives. We ended half term with a games
session which the youth loved, especially water balloon
throwing and a marshmallow stick building game!
Schools work in and around Reading:
A bunch of youth and schools workers, and chaplains, have
been meeting about our hope for the schools in Reading
and beyond. We’ve been mapping out the current provision,
noticing gaps and praying for God's help to fill them. It’s
always encouraging to meet with like minded people to chat,
reflect and pray . . . and if you have ideas or concerns related
to youth work and would like a chat, contact me, Westy, on:
What does the Holy
Claude's
view
from
the
pew
By Claude Masters
Tengiz Gogaberishvili, dreamstime.com
Having celebrated Pentecost at the beginning of June, it
is appropriate to ask now: what is the Holy Spirit doing
in our lives?
Everybody who has committed their life to Christ
possesses the Holy Spirit, ‘if anyone does not have the Spirit
of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.’ (Romans 8:9). It is the
Spirit who brings us new birth into the family of God.
ASSURANCE
The Spirit assures us of God’s love and acceptance,
despite our fears, doubts or failures. As adopted children
we can address God as our father: 'God sent the Spirit of
his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, Abba, Father.'
(Galatians 4:6).
By using the same word used by Jesus, we can grow in
intimacy with our Father and pray to him, especially when
we struggle to find the right words.
COMMITMENT
The Holy Spirit is committed to producing a family
likeness in those who follow Christ. This Jesus likeness
enables us to live as Jesus would in our place, ie: work,
family, time, interests and so on.
Paul describes this as the fruit of the Spirit: ‘love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness
and self-control.’ (Galatians 5:22,23).
He talks about fruit not fruits! We can’t pick and
choose, as they come as a total package to be developed
over a lifetime!
MOTIVATION
The Spirit is committed to producing new desires for
God: reading the Bible and praying, forgiving others,
meeting with other Christians and sharing our faith. He
will also give us the motivation to overcome wrong habits,
attitudes or lifestyle in our lives.
'Let the church return to Pentecost, and Pentecost will
return to her. The Spirit of God cannot take possession of
believers beyond their capacity of receiving him’
(Andrew Murray)
'Where are the other nine?' asked Jesus when only one
out of 10 people who had suffered from leprosy thanked
him for curing them all.
Thankfulness was the subject of the 103rd Archbishop of
Canterbury Lord Carey of Clifton’s sermon at the service
in honour of Her Majesty the Queen in St Andrew’s
Church on Sunday 5 June.
After offering the Queen his congratulations on her
Platinum Jubilee and thanking her for her many years of
devoted service to this country, and the Commonwealth,
he went on to wonder how often we don’t express our
gratitude to those we ought, particularly our nearest and
dearest.
Nearly 300 worshippers packed into the church to take
part in a memorable and emotional service.
The augmented choir, conducted by our director of
music Hannah Towndrow and accompanied by Peter
Wright on the organ, produced some stunning music
which nearly took the roof off the church.
This included an excellent rendering of the Handel
anthem ‘Zadok the Priest’.
The congregation also heartily joined in the well known
traditional hymns.
RATIONS
After the service the clergy, choir and congregation
went into The Ark garden passing through a Guard
of Honour formed by the uniformed organisations.
On reflection: Numbers
By Elizabeth Spiers
felicia-buitenwerf, unsplash.com-
It’s holiday time for many of us and any trip we take at
home or abroad requires preparation; passports, currency
etc. In the book of Numbers, we read that the Israelites
were in the wilderness at the beginning of their journey to
the Promised Land. They had no idea what lay ahead.
In the first 10 chapters we are told how God, through Moses,
set about preparing his chosen people to be ready and able to
enter the Promised Land. Many times, we read ‘The Lord said
to Moses…’. Numbers may seem dry reading but preparation,
while not the most exciting thing, was essential to get the
people ready, practically and spiritually for their journey.
A census counted how many active soldiers they had. They
were split into tribes and told where to camp. The Levites
were authorised to be the priests. Rituals were established
and undertaken. Ceremonies were held to remind them of
their deliverance from Egypt and to set them apart as God’s
people. Finally, God’s presence dwelt among them continually
as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
UNTRUSTING
They were being prepared for their journey; counted,
organised, cleansed, blessed, and made ready to march
forward as an organised group with an identity and a
purpose, not like the group of slaves that escaped from
Egypt. God ensured that they had all the tools they needed to
make the journey successfully. But in chapter 11, the people
started complaining about Moses and his choice of wife, his
leadership, the monotony of the food, about Aaron, and the
lack of water. Even Aaron complained about Moses.
God became angry. In chapter 14: ‘The Lord said to Moses,
how long will this people spurn me? And how long will they not believe
in me, despite all the signs which I have performed in their midst?’
Unfortunately, instead of being grateful to God they
sinned by complaining about everything. Instead of trusting
God — after all, he had proved himself faithful in every
miracle and provision he gave them — they complained.
And that is sin. Finding your creator or his representative
at fault isn’t a wise thing to do. God takes us through things
to strengthen our trust, to build our character and he walks
through it all with us.
Matthew 6:8 says that God knows what we need before
we ask. Philippians 4:19 tells us that God will supply all our
needs. What God won’t do is let disobedience and criticism of
him go unnoticed. Towards the end of Numbers, God meted
out some shocking punishments to the complainers: death
by fire or plague. We must never forget that God is the great I
AM. He doesn’t explain himself. This is who I AM is!
The Parish Magazine - July/August 2022 13
From the desk
of the editor
editor@theparishmagazine.co.uk
Taking God and his
church for granted
While hardly a day goes by without doing something
connected with editing this magazine — it might be a
conversation, an idea that comes to mind while doing
something else, or an enquiry about a forthcoming issue
— it is not until the first week of the month that I really
get stuck into producing the next issue. This meant,
of course, that when it came to this issue, the Jubilee
celebrations were a huge distraction.
On the Thursday and Friday, instead of sitting at my
desk writing and editing, there was the always excellent
scarecrow trail to take part in and to explore. While
doing so, it was a great pleasure to meet in person many
of our readers and visitors to the parish and our church.
It was particularly good to hear that what we are doing
is appreciated, and it was good to hear some ideas about
what we might write about in the future.
For example, one of the recurring comments from
visitors was about our wonderful stained glass windows
that were brightly lit by the sunshine that blessed most
of the two days. The windows are also often mentioned in
the comments in the visitors book and many people ask
about the history and age of them.
BECOMING TOO FAMILIAR
Like, I imagine, most of the regular members of the
church who attend week by week throughout the year, the
windows are a feature that we almost take for granted. If
I am honest, if someone changed one I probably would not
even notice! It's not that I don't admire them, it's like all
things that we are familiar with, we so often take them
for granted and lose sight of their beauty.
I also have to admit that I know very little about either
the history of stained glass or the windows themselves,
although I do know that in our magazine archives there
are, fortunately, a good number of references to them, and
I have been told recently about someone who may be able
to tell us more about the ancient art of both painting and
staining glass, and about how it is still done today. So to
all those who have asked me questions about the windows
recently, watch this space.
Taking things for granted, of course, is a common
habit for us all, which is why it has been good to have met
so many visitors recently — their delight in seeing the
windows and the other beautiful aspects of our church
building for the first time, reminds us of why we chose to
make St Andrew's 'our church' in the first place.
Taking things for granted is something we should
always be aware of avoiding. This, of course, is most
important when it comes to our relationship with God. He
is the reason why our ancestors built our church, and the
reason why we look after it for future generations who will
inherit it. Let's not take God or his church for granted.

There were about 300,000 Coptic Christians and 80,000
Roman Catholics before the fall of Gadhafi in 2011, and
an unknown number of Anglicans and Pentecostals.
Today, Libya has a Christian population estimated
at 35,000 which is 0.5% of the country’s 6.7 million
predominantly Muslim population.
As of 2014, it was believed, according to the Washington
Post, that the Christian population was composed mainly of
foreigners working in the country, plus a small indigenous
Christian community.
Open Doors describes Libya as a 'lawless land' and places
it at number four on its World Watch List of countries where
Christians are the most persecuted. Christians there must
keep their faith secret — or risk punishment, arrest or death.
Those who leave Islam to follow Jesus face immense
pressure from their family to renounce their faith. Their
community ostracises them and they can be left homeless,
jobless and alone. Telling others about Jesus can lead to
arrest and even violent punishment.
Laws in the country are not enforced uniformly, since
Libya has no central government. Open Doors states that
targeted kidnapping and executions are always a possibility
for believers.
At the end of September last year a group of 17 Coptic
Christians disappeared. They were living in an Egyptian
neighbourhood in Tripoli. It is uncertain if they were taken
by a radical group or local authorities. Before the rise of ISIS
(Islamic State/daesh), Libya was a common destination for
Egypt’s Coptic Christian community.
Readers may remember there was a horrific video in 2015
showing mass beheadings on a beach of at least a dozen
Egyptian Christians by the Libyan arm of ISIS . This awful
event stopped many Christians from travelling to Libya
for work. The memory runs deep according to a Middle
East manager for International Christian Concern. It was a
traumatic event for 'all of Egypt’s Christians'.
Open Doors works with local partners in North Africa to
provide leadership training, discipleship, livelihood support,
pastoral care and prayer support.
The organisation asks for prayers for Christians in Libya.
To thank God for their inspiring example in seeking the
Lord. To help local partners be effective in interacting with
believers. And to bring about a change in the status quo in
Libya — for strong and fair government, and protection for
people of all faiths. Amen.
When someone asked recently, 'What is confirmation?'
I realised that many things that go on inside churches
must be a complete mystery to a large number of people,
especially nowadays as religious education in our schools
today cover so many different faiths — and often none
— writes Bob Peters. It also made me realise that some
explanation is needed for the advert about 'being confirmed
in the Church of England' that first appeared in our last
issue. Here is how the Church of England explains it ...
'Confirmation is a special church service in which a person
confirms the promises that were made when they were
baptised. If you were baptised at a christening when you were
a child, your parents and godparents made these promises
on your behalf. As a young person or adult, you may be ready
to affirm these promises for yourself and commit your life to
following Jesus Christ. At a confirmation service, you make
these promises for yourself. Your friends and family as well
as the local Christian community will be there to promise to
support and pray for you.
A bishop will place his, or her, hands on your head and ask
God’s Holy Spirit to give you the strength and commitment
to live God’s way for the rest of your life.
Being confirmed is a choice not a requirement — the
Church of England doesn’t have a formal membership
in that sense — everyone is welcome to come along to
church, worship and be a part of the church community.
Being confirmed is simply a sign of your commitment and
involvement. Some leadership roles and being ordained as a
minister do require confirmation.'
CLASSES
The act of confirmation dates back to New Testament
times when the followers of Jesus were baptised by his
disciples after promising to lead their life according to the
teaching of Jesus. As Christianity spread the role was taken
on by the bishops — our illustration top right is from a
German woodcarving made in 1679.
Early in the history of the Church it became common for
infants to be baptised. The earliest mention of infant baptism
is thought to be in an African church by Father Tertullian,
(AD 160 - 220).
At St Andrew's, our next confirmation service will be
held on Sunday 20 November at 10.30am when the Bishop
of Oxford, the Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft will be officiating.
Candidates who have not previously been baptised will be
baptised during the service, and then all candidates will
renew their baptismal vows. This involves agreeing to the
rejection of the devil, repenting sin and accepting Christ as
your Saviour.
All this will be explained during a series of 'classes'
starting in September, after which you will be in a position
to decide if you would like to be confirmed. Remember, it is
a choice, not a requirement to worship in St Andrew's, or any
other Church of England Church.
For young people, aged 10-18 years, the classes will be led
by Westy on Monday evenings beginning on 12 September,
and for adults, Rev Kate will be holding them on a Tuesday
evening from 13 September. If you would like to learn more
about being confirmed call the number on the right.
Summer holiday food
celebrations
The Parish Magazine - July/August 2022 19
By Bob Peters
July and August, the UK's traditional holiday months, give us time to put aside
our daily routines and eating habits and simply enjoy doing things, and eating,
for pleasure. The food industry clearly recognises this because July and August
are filled with special awareness days that celebrate some of the foods we are
often encouraged not to eat in excess, and some of which are illustrated above.
The summer months kick off by
tempting us with International
Chicken Wing Day on 1 July. The idea
was the brainchild of the mayor of
Buffalo, New York State, who officially
declared International Chicken Wing
Day in 1977. Basically, it seems, you fill
a bucket with chicken wings cooked in
your favourite sauce — such as Buffalo
sauce — and eat them as often as
possible throughout the day!
A week later, on 7 July, it's time to
indulge in something that is even more
popular for all ages throughout the
world. Yes, it is World Chocolate Day!
The date celebrates the introduction
of chocolate to Europe on 7 July 1550,
and today, the UK is one of the largest
consumers of it, the largest being
Switzerland. But why do we need a
special day? Who cares, just enjoy it!
Then we wait 10 days to celebrate
another worldwide treat — ice cream
— on 17 July. The earliest ice cream is
believed to have been made in China
(AD 618-907) when buffalo (the animal
not the place this time), cow and
goat milk was heated and allowed to
ferment. It was mixed with flour and
camphor for flavour and 'refrigerated'
before being served. I don't think you
will find camphor flavoured ice cream
at the seaside, but there are many more
enticing flavours available today.
But why a special day? That's down
to America again. In 1984, President
Ronald Reagan introduced a law
declaring that on the third Sunday
of July each year everyone should be
given a treat of ice cream!
Also with its roots in America is the
National Wine and Cheese Day on 25
July which is an annual holiday created
by freelance writer and wine-lover,
Jace Shoemaker-Galloway. The idea
is to spend the day trying different
combinations of wine and cheese.
The problem with this is trying to
remember which ones you preferred!
SOMETHING BRITISH
Let's start the first day of August
by eating something far more British,
the humble Yorkshire pudding, as we
celebrate Yorkshire Day.
On 4 July we turn again to America
and enjoy Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
on Independence Day.
The cookie, of course, which many
consider is a symbol of American
cuisine, was originally imported there
by European immigrants — at least
This montage has used unsplash.com images
that could be your excuse for enjoying
some!
The good news is that one delicious
truly British treat is the Bakewell tart
and we can all do homage to this on
11 August, yes, it is Bakewell Tart Day!
The pudding was invented by Mrs
Greaves, landlady of the White Horse
Inn in Bakewell, around the late 18th
or early 19th century. There are at least
three shops in Bakewell claiming that
they are selling tarts made from the
original, and highly secret, recipe. If
you go to Bakewell, let me know which
is best!
The following week, on 17 August,
there is some confusion about whether
it is cupcake day or not. A Google
search gives a wide choice of different
days throughout the year, so just in
case the 17th is the day, make sure you
eat one. If it's not, don't worry, you will
have enjoyed the cake anyway!
There's no confusion about the
UK Burger Day being on 25 August or
indeed, Lemon Juice Day on 29 August
when as well as using lemon juice in
whatever you are cooking you are
encouraged to wash your hair (if you
have any hair) in it!
In July or August there is no need
to feel guilty about indulging in food
we are encouraged to avoid, or having
Scarecrows raise £12k for local causes
Hundreds of locals and visitors enjoyed two days of sunshine to wander
around the Sonning Scarecrows Trail and made us all remember what we
had missed the last few years because of Covid restrictions. As well as 62
scarecrows to hunt down, there were six splendid gardens to explore, and
the opportunity to admire a collection of cherished cars. Barbara Carr, one
of the organisers, sends her thanks for 'anything' you did towards making
it a huge success, whether opening your garden, manning gardens, making
cakes, serving teas, selling trail maps, directing at car parks, etc, and,
of course to all those who made a scarecrow. Approaching £12,000 has
been raised for local groups and projects. There will be a thank you evening on
Thursday 7 July at 7.45pm in Pearson Hall.
Keith Nichols
The Friends of St Andrew's Church (FoStAC) offer their thanks to all who helped,
baked and supported the refreshments provided in The Ark during the Scarecrow
Trail. It meant they could raise over £1,500 towards their funds and donate the
leftover ingredients to the Salvation Army in Reading. FoStAC is now planning a
garden party on Bank Holiday Monday 29 August — more details on page 29.
Bob Peters
While a popular theme for the previous Scarecrow Trail was Trump, this year he was
strangely replaced with several Boris party displays. The editor's favourite was the
above: Green, Party, Red Party and Christmas Party!
During the two day trail, a constant
stream of visitors were welcomed into
St Andrew's Church by STAY's Rev
Lovejoy where they enjoyed the special
flower displays, including the 'crown
and throne' (see front cover). Rev Jamie
(left) spent several hours entertaining
visitors on the new church organ — it is
the real vicar, not a scarecrow! — and
the editor above (who is a scarecrow)
encouraged visitors to take a copy of
the latest 'Parish Magazine'. A short
walk away by The Ark the Sunday Club
children's Joseph added a splash of
colour to the gardens. It was good to
welcome back so many families who
had visited the church previously for
weddings, baptisms and funerals and
who just wanted to wander around and
enjoy the sunshine flooding through the
stained glass windows.
Sonning Art Group
Sonning Art Group
Sonning Art Group's exhibition in Pearson Hall was also hugely successful with
over 70 paintings covering most mediums and showcased many different styles
and subjects, all of a very high quality that was reflected in the many compliments
received from visitors. The group's Queen Bee scarecrow was one of the main
attractions, thanks to Jeremy Gilmore, a local beekeeper, who generously loaned
a hive, body suit and smoker that made up the centrepiece of the display. Michael
Sheppard, the husband of one the Art Group members, made a mini hive fitted with
a bee buzzing button that the children — and many adults — enjoyed, Almost
everyone in the club contributed in some way to knitting and felting bees, making
flowers, painting stones, producing posters and providing props.

WOOD YOU BELIEVE IT? A 100 year old wooden, 'not wanted on voyage' trunk found in the loft of a Sonning home
inspired this Pearson Road scarecrow (left), while on the other side of the street, 'Stick Man', written by former
Children's Laureate Julia Donaldson was clearly behind 'Stick Man' (centre), and round the corner, in Pound Lane,
none other than a splendid 'Wood...EE', AKA Woody of Toy Story fame, was attracting children of all ages!

THE WAR IN UKRAINE
A senior church leader in Ukraine
has told the citizens that Russia’s
war on Ukraine 'did not begin with
missiles and bombs — it began with
deception, untruth and lies.' So says
the head of Ukraine’s independent
Orthodox Church, Metropolitan
Epiphany (Dumenko).
'The Lord is now showing us how
we must resist with the testimony
of truth. Evil is evil, not just an
alternative viewpoint, and war is war,
not just some conflict. Rapists, looters
and murderers are criminals, and what
they are perpetuating is a genocide of
the Ukrainian people.'
The Metropolitan also said that
Ukrainians knew that Russia had long
had 'evil plans to restore the tyranny
of a rotten, overthrown empire.'
But, he said 'The Lord is with us in
this struggle, because we are fighting
for truth and goodness against
demonic tyranny and resentment
. . . We believe that our people will
overcome all new challenges — that
Ukraine will win its victory.'
Meanwhile, the Primate of
Ukraine’s Greek Catholic Church,
Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk
of Kyiv-Halych, said that this spring
and summer may well be the last for
many, including himself.
He went on: 'As the war escalates,
and the enemy intensifies its offensive
against Ukraine, I call on everyone to
pray vigorously and tirelessly for the
Ukrainian army, because the fate of
Ukraine and the world is now being
decided.'
THE
WORLD
The huge outpouring of support for
Ukraine is now eclipsing other crises
around the world, which in turn is
threatening millions with starvation.
As we welcome the news that
Christian Aid is spending £8 million
in Ukraine through its local partners,
to provide medical supplies, first
aid kits, baby incubators and food
and shelter for refugees in Ukraine
and Hungary, the United Nations
and other international charities
are warning of even bigger disasters
elsewhere.
The Christian Aid funds were
raised by British people through
donations to DEC, the Disasters
Emergency Committee — which has
raised a remarkable £300 million for
Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the United Nations
reports that elsewhere in the
world, for example, Somalia, other
humanitarian organisations are
struggling to feed millions of equally
desperate people. A UN spokesperson
said, 'The outlook for Somalia was
already grim prior to the outbreak of
the Ukraine crisis, but we were then
overshadowed by the crisis in Tigray,
Yemen, and then Afghanistan.'
For example, said the UN, in
Somalia, 4.5 million people are at
risk of starvation owing to the worst
Good news is bad news for others
Charities and benefactors around the world are facing a serious dilemma:
Ukraine, the suffering of other equally needy people elsewhere is becoming
more serious.
drought in a decade and the situation,
is deteriorating quickly. Somalia
urgently needs some £1.1 billion
in aid, of which only 3% has been
secured.
The international director of
Tearfund, Veena O’Sullivan, said:
'While the eyes of the world have been
fixed on Ukraine, other horrors have
been taking place.'
These range from a 'hunger crisis
of massive proportions' in the Horn
of Africa, which includes Somalia,
and the ongoing violence and famine
in the Tigray region of Ethiopia,
as well as humanitarian crises in
Afghanistan, Yemen and Syria.
HUMANITARIAN CRISIS
The director of CAFOD, Christine
Allen, said: 'It is right that we support
a response to the humanitarian crisis
in Ukraine, in whatever way we can,
but this cannot be at the expense of
vital funds meant for tackling the
root causes of global poverty.'
Church leaders in Africa have
warned that the Ukraine war is
already affecting their food security,
as 40% of Ukraine’s wheat and maize
is exported to the Middle East and
Africa. The poorest are the most
affected, as market prices rise.
As we pray for peace in Ukraine,
we must also keep praying for the
starving people in our world!

Not only do bees help provide the honey, propolis and
beeswax, but they also help to keep us all fed and watered.
Without bees, more than a third of everything we eat
would disappear from our tables.
The majority of our honey, 85% in the UK, is imported,
but there are local beekeepers on our doorsteps. So why
not visit a local farm shop or deli and enjoy the precious
Enter into the rest that God created to enjoy
By Rev Michael Burgess
At this time of the year we are
planning and looking forward to
holidays — that welcome break
away from the pressures and
responsibilities of daily life and
work. The book of Genesis opens
with a glorious account of God’s
work of creation and tells us that
even God rested on the seventh day.
We all need to find that balance of
work and rest, of activity and slowing
down in our lives. And we are not
always good at that because our
world seems to be in the fast lane.
We rush everywhere, we rush out of
habit, and we rush because everyone
around us is rushing.
This month’s painting, ‘The Potato
Planters’ by Jean–Francois Millet, a
19th century French artist, portrays
two peasants at work. They don’t
seem to be rushing, but Millet has
certainly portrayed the hard toil of
their work, digging in the earth from
sunrise to sunset to eke out a living.
SEVERE REALISM
Millet was the son of a farm
labourer and many of his paintings
convey the severe realism of peasant
life. We can sympathise with the
couple working on the land, and our
eyes focus on them as they dominate
the canvas.
But in the corner under the shade
of a tree there is a donkey and a
sleeping child. The donkey knows
only too well the reality of toil and
work, but here he is resting, enjoying
the peace and the shade.
Andy Merrifield, an American
philosopher, has just published an
Jean-François Millet, public domain, Wikimedia Commons
account of his travels with a donkey,
Gribouille. As they journey together,
the donkey teaches him the value of
patience, the importance of going
slowly through the world, and the
preciousness of tender friendship
between humans and animals. They
are all caught up in the little donkey
in this painting.
The man and woman in the
foreground may reflect our own lives
with the duties, the expectations and
the demands called of us at work.
Take time to focus on the donkey,
enjoying his rest. Take time this
summer to find relaxation and
recreation on holiday. The world may
carry on spinning around us, but use
that holiday to stand apart and enter
into the rest that God enjoyed after
his work of creation.
Priestly Possibilities
By Steven Rolling
Hebrews 4:14-16
Tune: St Stephen, ‘In Christ there is
no east or west’
Seeing we have a great high priest
Helping least to greatest
Who has into the heavens passed
His salvation shall last
Jesus the Son of God He be
He is a high priest, see
Who can sympathise with us, weak
Though we are, we Him seek
Our weaknesses where prone to sin
He was tempted therein
In all ways that we are, human
He became as us men
Though He full human, full divine
With Father did align
Not sin through temptation, not fall
In them, but conquered all
Let us therefore come boldly to
The throne of grace anew
That we may obtain mercy, find
Grace in needs-times, He kind
10 July brings us Sea Sunday, the day
when Christian churches remember, pray
and give thanks for the more than 1.5
million merchant seafarers and fishermen
worldwide. If seafarers seem irrelevant
to your daily life, think again: 90 per
cent of everything you buy in the shops
comes to you by sea. Merchant seafarers
quite literally keep our global economy
afloat. Yet it is a tough life, far from loved
ones. Merchant ships are harsh working
environments, never mind the threat of
piracy or even shipwreck.
To help the seafarers, a worldwide
network of port chaplains has sprung up.
They offer hospitality and friendship, as
well as practical, emotional and spiritual
support, providing almost a ‘home from
home’ in hundreds of ports, in more than
50 countries. You might wish to support
one of these three well-known societies:
The Mission to Seafarers (Anglican), The
Apostolate of the Sea (Roman Catholic), and
