Communities around Madison County are offering up everything 

from parades and fireworks to rides, games, and food to celebrate 

the Independence Day holiday. 

• London 

London’s patriotic celebration includes fireworks on July 3 and 

a parade on July 4. 

The fireworks are set to go off at dusk on July 3 at London High 

School. The home stands at the high school stadium will be open 

for seating. The stadium restrooms also will be open. 

The parade lines up at 10 a.m. July 4 and steps off at 11. The 

route runs south on Main Street from Park Avenue to East First 

Street. Anyone is welcome to participate. Links to the parade application 

can be found on the city’s website, www.londonohio.gov, 

and social media pages. Applications and announcer sheets can be 

mailed or dropped off at the mayor’s office, 20 S. Walnut St., Suite 

100. For details, contact Mayor Patrick Closser at (614) 357-5567. 

The city has chosen the Friends of Madison County Parks & 

Trails (FMCPT) as the parade grand marshal. The non-profit volunteer 

group helps to maintain and improve the bike trail in Madison 

County and does anything they can to make London a 

bicycle-friendly community. The group’s goal is to complete and 

maintain the link of the Ohio To Erie Trail through Madison County 

as it goes from the Ohio River to Lake Erie. 

“We chose to honor the Friends of Madison 

County Parks & Trails for their overall 

commitment to the city of London and to the 

trails. We always get compliments on our

trails, and it’s because of them,” Closser said. 

FMCPT is working toward garnering an 

official Trail Town designation for London. 

Trail Towns are cities and villages that go 

out of their way to accommodate trail users. 

The designation would attract more trail 

users and, therefore, boost the local economy, 

Closser said. 

“Besides what they do for the trails, 

they’re just a really great group that’s always 

willing to volunteer for anything. 

They’re always willing to help out to make 

the community better,” he added. 

• West Jefferson 

The July 4th Streetfest takes place July 

2-4 on South Center and Pearl streets in 

downtown West Jefferson. Rides, food, entertainment, 

a parade, and fireworks are 

planned. The schedule is as follows:

Tigers volleyball team wins silver at national tourney 

Recently, a number of Madison County 

Special Olympic athletes and their unified 

partners embarked on a trip that would test 

their skills and determination on the volleyball 

court. 

Attending the USA Volleyball Open 

Championships in Orlando, Fla., the Madison 

County Tigers wanted to make their 

mark. And they definitely made their mark 

by upending some tough teams, ultimately 

finishing in second place overall and earning 

silver medals. 

Coached by Alexis Comer, the team was 

made up of athletes Logan Todd, John 

Zeeck, Courtney Salters, and Mike Elfrink, 

as well as unified partners Tatum Pullins, 

Lincoln Comer, Jacey Hamilton, and Chris 

Zeeck. Volunteer assistants were Violet 

Comer and Carter Comer. 

The Tigers showed determination 

throughout pool play, earning the two seed 

while defeating all opponents except Team 

Florida. The Texas Lonestar Warriors gave 

the Tigers some challenges, forcing three sets. 

As fate would have it, the Tigers found 

themselves faced up with the Lonestar Warriors 

in the medal round. Texas again 

proved to be tough, winning the second set 

of the match and forcing a deciding third 

set. The Tigers won 15-12 and advanced to 

the championship game. 

There they met Team Florida again, a 

squad selected to play in the 2022 USA 

Games. The Madison County squad faced a 

difficult challenge, according to Lincoln 

Comer, Madison County’s director of Special 

Olympics and community recreation for 

Madison County Board of Developmental 

Disabilities. 

Even though the Tigers fell in two sets to 

Florida in the title game (25-17, 25-16), 

Comer was proud of the team’s great show 

of determination and sportsmanship.

The fireworks will be launched from 

Hampton Cemetery and can be viewed from 

Garrette Park. 

The committee welcomes donations to 

help offset expenses associated with putting

• Mount Sterling 

The Mount Sterling Chamber of Commerce 

is hosting a parade on July 4. Lineup 

starts at 9 a.m. at the Mount Sterling Community 

Center, 164 E. Main St. The parade 

steps off at 10. From the Community Center, 

the parade route goes right on Main Street, 

left on Clevenger Avenue, left on Columbus 

Street, left onto London Street, right on 

Houston Street, right on High Street, then 

left back into the Community Center. 

The Chamber is honoring the late Darrell 

Cooper as the parade grand marshal. For 

years, Cooper participated in many area parades, 

playing a calliope organ atop a float. 

He passed away this past year. The calliope 

will be part of this year’s July 4 parade. 

Among the other entries are the Tri 

County Joint Fire District, Madison-Plains 

High School marching band, and Mount 

Sterling American Legion 417 honor guard. 

Anyone is welcome to participate in the parade.

• Plain City 

Plain City’s Independence Day festivities 

are taking place on July 4. They kick off with 

opening day of the Plain City Farmers Market 

from 9 a.m. to noon in uptown Plain City. 

The parade is set for 10 a.m. with lineup 

at 9 a.m. at the north entrance to Pastime 

Park. The route runs south on Chillicothe 

Street, right on Main Street, and right on 

Park Street. Awards will go to the most patriotic, 

best youth, best float, and best animal

Rosemary Anderson is the parade grand 

marshal. Anderson is an active member of 

the commmunity. She serves as vice president 

of the Plain City Historical Society. 

“She has done lot of work maintaining 

the history and traditions of the village,” 

said Haley Lupton, village manager. 

The rest of the day’s activities all take 

place at Pastime Park. Food, games, and 

bounce houses start at noon. The 23 Southbound 

band plays at 7 p.m. followed by the 

Dublin Wind Symphony at 9. The fireworks 

go off at 9:45. 

This year, only handicap parking is available 

in the park. Other parking is available 

across street. The village is offering trolley 

services to and from the park from Plain 

City Elementary and the village administration 

building for the afternoon and evening 

activities.

July 1: Deadline to sign up for Livestock 101

“I really like animals, and I wanted to do 4-H, but I never had 

done it before,” said Carlee Mason, 12, about why she participated 

in Livestock 101 at last year’s Madison County Fair. 

New as of last year, Livetock 101 is designed for youths like 

Mason to give them a taste of what it’s like to show an animal and 

participate in the fair. Participants choose a specie to show, are 

paired with an experienced 4-H or FFA member for coaching, then 

show the animal in the show ring before a real-life judge. It’s as 

close to an actual Junior Fair livestock show experience as it comes 

for youths who are not enrolled in 4-H or FFA. 

“The goal of Livestock 101 is to get kids involved in 4-H and FFA 

and see the difference that livestock can make in helping to create 

their work ethic, responsibility and compassion. It’s also designed 

to show them that anyone can do it, no matter where they are from 

or their background,” said Paul Gross, Senior Fair Board president. 

Approximately 145 youths took part in the event last year. Most 

hailed from Madison County. 

“On a scale of 1 to 10, it was about a 15,” Gross said about the 

event’s debut. “We had the entire bleachers filled with spectators. 

The kids that showed had an exceptional experience. And the 4- 

Hers and FFAers who helped the kids walked around with pride. It 

was such a show of youth leadership, it gave you goosebumps.” 

Mason definitely came away with a positive experience. She 

showed a pig and won her class, taking home an actual pig as her 

prize for first place. 

“It went good. I learned a lot about pigs, like how to walk them 

and how, if they get hot, they can’t sweat so you have to rinse them 

off,” she said. 

Since last year’s fair, Mason has joined a 4-H club (Speedy 

Spurs) and continued to learn more about pigs. She will be showing 

her prize pig at this year’s fair. 

Livestock 101 is open to youths who are 

17 years old and younger. There is no cost 

to participate. The sign-up deadline is July

Participants receive an event t-shirt and 

are eligible to win prizes. This year’s event 

takes place at 10 a.m. July 15 in the Eby 

Arena.

Flagpole dedicated in memory of Grace Yerian 

On June 14 (Flag Day), the London chapter 

of the National Society Daughters of the 

American Revolution (DAR) dedicated a 

flagpole and plaque in memory of Grace M. 

Yerian. 

The ceremony took place at the Coover 

Memorial Club House on North Main 

Street, home to the London Federation of 

Women’s Clubs. The London DAR chapter 

is part of the federation. As a surprise at the 

ceremony, Vince Morse, caterer for the club 

house, played a song on a violin that had belonged 

to Yerian’s father. 

Yerian, who passed away in 2020, had 

been an active member and honorary chapter 

regent of the DAR. She was admitted to 

the organization on June 9, 1967. Her ancestors 

who fought in the American Revolution 

included David Sayre and Henry 

Enoch. She also was a past member of the 

Federation of Women’s Clubs board of 

trustees and was active not only with DAR 

but also with the Coover Society, one of the 

Federation’s member organizations. 

Yerian was an avid historian and genealogist. 

She was a charter member of the 

Madison County Historical Society and the 

Madison County Genealogical Society for 

which she served as library director. 

Additionally, Yerian was a member of: 

the Captain Frances Drake chapter of the 

National Society Colonial Dames of the 17th 

Century, serving as the Ohio Society state 

president; the Descendants of the Founders 

and Patriots of America; and the Sons and 

Daughters of the Pilgrims.

flagpole and plaque in memory of Grace M. Yerian, a 53-year 

member of the DAR. The flagpole is located at the Coover Memorial 

Club House, home of the London Federation of Women’s 

Clubs. The DAR presented the flagpole as a gift to the federation:

The Madison County Democratic Party 

has announced the winners of the 2022 

Howard Foust Citizenship Awards. These 

awards are annually granted to a graduating 

senior from each of the public school districts 

in Madison County. 

This year’s winners are: Isaiah Heyman, 

Jonathan Alder High School; Josephine 

Davis, London High School; Katelynn 

LeGault, Madison-Plains High School; and 

Tyler Buescher, West Jefferson High School. 

Awards are based on demonstrated acts 

of citizenship on the part of the applicants. 

For example, Josephine Davis created a diversity 

club at London High School that focused 

on different cultures, and Tyler 

Buescher was involved in extensive school 

and community volunteer activities. The 

awards are nonpartisan, but applicants 18 

and older are expected to be registered to 

vote. 

The awards consist of cash payments of 

$300 to each winner, intended for use in any 

post-high school educational activity they 

choose. College enrollment is not necessary. 

Applicants can demonstrate their qualities 

either by written or multi-media submission. 

The program is chaired by Cheryl Brockman 

of London with assistance from Mike 

Gorman, Meg Wood, Celeste Lipp and Scott 

Brockman. The awards program has been

Ohio, passed away on May 28, 2022, surrounded 

by her loving family. Marilyn was 

born on Jan. 27, 1928, in Columbus, Ohio, 

and was the daughter of the late Fred and

Willard Oakley Conley Jr. “Junior”, 88, of Circleville 

passed away on June 13, 2022. He was born on April 16, 1934 in Waverly to 

Willard Oakley Conley Sr and Edith Mae (Hayes) Conley. 

Preceded in death by parents, wife of 62 years in April of 2016; Melva Jean 

Conley, son in April 2018 Rodney “Animal” Conley, in-laws Dolly and Charles 

Alfred “Goaty” Terflinger, brothers Charlie, Ronnie, Billie Sr. and Larry Conley, 

his one and only sister he loved so much Patty Conley Wile, sister-in-law Susie 

Conley. 

Willard is survived by daughter Rhonda and Terry Allen of Circleville, brother 

Tommy and Peggy of Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews and so 

many friends and family he loved. 

After getting married in 1953 Willard entered the Army. While in Germany 

he took up the trade as a hod carrier building his first brick fireplace. He 

wouldn’t have known then where that would lead with a career of over 50 

years of laying brick, to home projects, building Westfall School running projects 

in Columbus. When you look at high rises in Columbus that was dad. 

One Nation, Convention Center all those pavor bricks you walk on just to 

name a few. He always worked weekends to provide but also people loved 

what he did always wanting something built or stone laid, to mailbox post 

you name it. He put stone on our house. To the man he was! Best kind 

hearted always a smile when he saw you. 

As I was told today he would say “Hi Sis” when he saw you or hey bud. Like 

so many say, Heaven gained a great man.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 20, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the

Funeral Home, West Jefferson. Mass was held on June 4 at Saints 

Simon and Jude Church, West Jefferson with Rev. Father Robert 

Kitsmiller as celebrant. Burial followed at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 

West Jefferson.

Jaime Marie Stahl Gilmore, 44, of Frankfort, Ohio, formerly of 

London, died on June 3, 2022, at the OSU Wexner Medical Center. 

Jaime was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Dec. 12, 1977, a daughter of 

John and Jan (Holiday) Stahl. 

She graduated from London High School in 1996. A highlight of 

her life was when she won the title of Marigold Festival Queen in 

London, which enabled her to travel all over the state of Ohio to 

represent London and Madison County. Jaime loved animals of all 

kinds, particularly the downtrodden and the “runts.”She was an 

organ donor, having already saved three lives. 

Jaime is survived by: her loving husband of two years, Robert 

Rueben Gilmore; parents of London; daughters, 

Elizabeth (Hayden) Thompson, 

Bethanie Hysell, and Joshua Hysell, all of 

London; siblings, Jonathan (Amy) Stahl of 

London and Joseph (Laurie) Stahl of Galloway; 

two grandchildren; several nieces 

and nephews; mother-in-law, Mary

Milton Alonzo “Tony” Mitchell, 69, of 

London died on June 13, 2022, in his residence. 

Born on Sept. 11, 1952, in Urbana, 

he was a son of Milton R. and Geraldine 

Elizabeth (Saunders) Mitchell. 

A U.S. Army veteran, Tony had also 

been a factory worker. 

Survivors include: his wife of 49 years, 

Jean E. (Freeman) Mitchell; children, Darin Wade (Kelly) Vermillion, 

Toni Annette Mitchell Barnett and Joshua Allen Mitchell; 

stepson, Reed (Dru) Collins; grandchildren, Jordan Scott Vermillion,

Matthew Evans, Darian Collins and Aubree Collins; great-grandson,

SEYMOUR 

Susan E. Seymour, 73, of Mount Sterling, Ohio, joined her 

beloved husband, Roger, in Heaven on June 15, 2022. She was born 

in Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 6, 1948, to the late Alfred and Helen 

Dingus. 

Susan was married to the love of her life, Roger Seymour, for 53 

years before he passed on Jan. 1, 2020. In addition to her parents 

and her beloved Roger, she was preceded in death by her brothers, 

Wayne Dingus and Martin Dingus. 

She is survived by: her children, Tammy (Ronald) Vansickle of 

Mount Sterling, Tracey (Tommy) Perkins of Washington Court 

House, Terressa (Rick) Stires of Mount Sterling, Tommy Seymour,

of God, volunteered at the Madison 

County Food Pantry, loved bowling and

James Andrew Thomas, 71, of West

William David Reed, 62, of South 

Solon died on June 18, 2022, in Select 

Specialty Hospital, Columbus, after a 

courageous battle with cancer. Born on 

Oct. 9, 1959, in Jamestown, Ohio, he was 

a son of William Darrel and Janet (Wilson) 

Reed. 

Dave had spent his lifetime as a mechanic 

working for JD Equipment in London, 

as well as many farmers in and 

around Madison County. He was an avid 

lover of his Harley Davidson and was always 

willing to take a ride. Above all, 

Dave loved his family and simply adored 

spending time with all his grandsons. 

He is survived by: three daughters, 

Amanda (David) Evans, Amber Newman 

(Kyle Corbin) and Ashley (Chris) Macy; 

grandsons, Aaron (Brittany), Hunter, Jacoby, 

and Andrew; four brothers, Darrel

Mt. Sterling looks to hire village administrator 



The village of Mount Sterling is on the hunt for a full-time village 

administrator. 

The position has been vacant for sometime now. Courtney 

Bricker, Mount Sterling’s fiscal officer and council clerk, has been 

fulfilling the duties of the village administrator during the vacancy. 

Bricker recently announced she wanted to move to part-time and 

handle only the fiscal officer and council clerk duties. On June 13, 

council approved the employment agreement with a unanimous 

vote. Bricker made that transition to part-time on June 21. 

The village is advertising for candidates for the full-time village 

administrator position. As part of the hiring process, they must 

present their search results to the state’s financial commission oversight 

board. The village’s next meeting with the board is July 12. 

With the board’s approval, the village could hire a new village administrator 

as early as July 13. 

Bulk Water Rates 

Council approved a rate increase for bulk water sales. Previously, 

the cost was $6.35 per 1,000 gallons. The new rate is $13.50 

per 1,000 gallons. Examples of customers who buy bulk water are 

those filling tankers or swimming pools. 

Becky Martin, chair of council’s water and wastewater committee, 

said Mount Sterling’s rates are well below those of other municipalities 

in the area. The committee took a hard look at the cost to produce 

the water, she said. Those two factors led to the committee’s 

recommendation to raise the rate. 

Council passed the legislation as an emergency so that the rate 

could go into effect immediately. This time of year is peak time for 

bulk water sales. The measure passed 6-0. 

Safety Proposals 

Council’s safety and block watch committee is recommending a 

couple of safety-related changes. The first has to do with fireworks. 

The state of Ohio recently made it legal for private citizens to set 

off fireworks on the following holidays: July 3-5 and the weekends 

immediately before and after; Labor Day weekend, Diwali, New 

Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year, Cinco de Mayo, 

Memorial Day weekend, and Juneteenth. Citizens can set off fireworks 

on their own property or on another person’s property with 

the property owner’s permission. 

Local municipalities can set parameters related to this new law. 

Mount Sterling’s safety committee is recommending the village 

allow residents to set off fireworks until 11 p.m. on all of the holidays 

listed above with the exception of New Year’s Eve/Day for 

which they are recommending a cutoff of 1 a.m. 

In response to another change in state law, the committee is recommending 

the village allow concealed carry of guns at town hall. 

Currently, town hall is a gun-free zone. 

Council has made no decisions on these recommendations at this 

time. 

Parking designations 

With council’s unanimous vote, the village will be designating 

parking spaces on London Street from Church and Houston streets 

to Columbus Street. Currently, parking spaces are not marked. The 

markings should be completed by the end of June. 

Additionally, the no-parking zone at Market Street and West 

Columbus Street will be extended by one car length to eliminate a 

blind spot and improve safety at the intersection. 

Ambulance District 

Rob Longcoy, council’s liaison with the Sterling Joint Ambulance 

District, reported that the district has hired 

two part-time basic emergency medical 

technicians (EMT). One of the new hirees 

was already serving as a volunteer for the 

department. 

“With hiring those two, it really alleviates 

a lot of the staffing stress we’ve had,” 

Longcoy said. 

He also reported that the district raised 

its pay rate for volunteers in an attempt to 

attract and retain volunteers. Previously, 

the volunteer pay rate was $60 per six-hour 

time block. Now, that block rate is $72 for 

basic EMTs, $78 for intermediate EMTs, 

and $84 for full EMTs. 

Honoring Jimmy Gossard 

Council passed a memorial proclamation 

in honor of the late Jimmy Gossard who 

passed away on April 7. Gossard had been a 

member of the former Mount Sterling Police 

Department for 26 years. During his tenure, 

he served as police chief. He retired in 1989. 

He also had been a Mount Sterling fire 

fighter for two years and served as a cook in 

the U.S. Army. He was a member of Masonic 

Lodge 269 and American Legion Post 

417. 

The proclamation recognized Gossard’s 

contributions to the community and the 

country, thanking him for his volunteerism, 

dedication and heroism. 

Teens can be 

ambassadors 

at AG’s office 

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s office 

is accepting applications for its Teen Ambassador 

Board. 

The board consists of upper-level high 

school students from public, private, charter 

and online schools in Ohio, as well as students 

who are home-schooled. The mission 

of the program is to provide Ohio’s future 

leaders with an inside look at Ohio law and 

government. 

“I have had the pleasure of getting to 

know some great future leaders through the 

Teen Ambassador Board,” Yost said. “We 

hope this opportunity helps to attract young 

people into pursuing careers focused on protecting 

and serving Ohioans.” 

Board members advise the office on issues 

relating to teens and collaborate with 

their peers to develop solutions to those issues. 

They serve a one-year term, during 

which they participate in activities throughout 

the state. 

Ohio high school students who will be 

juniors or seniors during the 2022-23 academic 

year are eligible to apply for the Teen 

Ambassador Board. 

Applications are due July 1, 2022. The
