in Monterey, was working to raise interest in the small community in renovating the mission, whose walls had been literally melting away since opportunists, builders, and time spirited away the church roof and tiles. In 1879, as part of his efforts, Fr. Casanova held Mass in the ruins of the Carmel Mission on the feast day of San Carlos Borromeo, as depicted in a drawing by Joseph Strong, who accompanied his friend Robert Louis Stevenson to the occasion. Stevenson, then living in Monterey, wrote of this Mass, and the essay was included in his 1892 book Across the Plains: The padre drives over the hill from Monterey; the little sacristy, which is the only covered portion of the church, is filled with seats and decorated for the service; the <strong>Indians</strong> troop together, their bright dresses contrasting with their dark and melancholy faces; and there, among a crowd of somewhat unsympathetic holiday makers, you may hear God served with perhaps more touching circumstances than in any other temple under heaven. An Indian, stone blind and about eighty years of age, conducts the singing; other <strong>Indians</strong> compose their choir; yet they have the Gregorian music at their
finger ends and pronounce the Latin so correctly that I could follow the meaning as they sang.…I have never seen faces more vividly lit up with joy than the faces of these Indian singers. When Stevenson wrote these nostalgic words, my great-grandfather Tomás Santos was two years old and had, in fact, been baptized by Fr. Casanova, as the Monterey Book of Baptisms attests.
