He Told Me, “Have You Ever Been
in a Plane?”
I said, “Never.”
Anyway, there were two brothers, they was both
bachelors and they had both been in the war and
they had planes. They were Americans, Germans I
think.
When we got through working about 2:30 or 3 in
the afternoon, another Indian fellow that had
worked with me, Vic Caravajel, he told me through
the summertime him and these guys flew back and
forth every day. “I heard you’ve never been in one,”
he says.
“Who the hell told you that?” See, that paisano,
that Indian, what the hell was his name, Vic tells
those brothers I’ve never been up, and one of them
says to me, “I’m going to be the first one to give you a
ride.”
“Like hell you are,” I says. “I got a truck to drive.” I
had a big Dodge truck there. It was about twenty-five
miles to town.
“The hell with the Dodge, let Vic drive it.”
