California Is a Story<br />

They love their children to excess (if that can<br />

be said), but they give them no education<br />

whatever. They merely recount to them the<br />

fables which they heard in their pagan state.<br />

They do this to entertain and satisfy the<br />

children. The latter believe these things as if<br />

they really happened, for a certain period.<br />

They held and do hold those as wise men<br />

who knew and could relate more of these<br />

fables. This is their chief knowledge.<br />
