A word from Ilam MP
Sarah
Pallett
I’m really proud that we’ve delivered
on Labour’s election commitment to
establish a public holiday to celebrate
Matariki. For the first time this
year, people here in Canterbury and
across the country have the chance
to enjoy a mid-winter holiday that is
uniquely our own.
Matariki heralds the start of the
Māori New Year and has increasingly
become a time of celebration not
just for Māori, but for many people
in Ōtautahi Christchurch and across
New Zealand. By making Matariki
a public holiday, we’re ensuring that
everyone can spend this special time
with friends and family.
We know that there are lots of
benefits to public holidays, and we’ve
seen business leaders around the
country noting that Matariki will
provide a real boost to the tourism
and hospitality sectors, with lots
of families planning mid-winter
holidays.
Alongside New Zealand’s reputation
for manaakitanga and being a
beautiful place to visit, te ao Māori is
another drawcard for international
guests, as it’s unique to Aotearoa.
Matariki is another great opportunity
for us to share our country’s history
and culture with the world.
This Matariki, there were a range of
events on across the country to help
us celebrate and it was pleasing to
see many in our community come
together to mark the start of the
Māori New Year.
Whether your family already had
Matariki traditions, or you took the
opportunity to start new ones – I
hope you and your loved ones got a
chance to come together and enjoy
New Zealand’s first Matariki public
holiday. Mānawatia a Matariki.
Call to reinstate sandcastle competition
• By Emily Moorhouse
A PLEA HAS gone out to restart
the hugely popular sandcastle
competition at New Brighton
Beach – but it needs people to
organise it.
The competition, organised
by the Pegasus Bay Charitable
Trust, was last held in 2015 and
attracted thousands of spectators.
Key members
Tim Sintes,
Philip Dural and
Brian Keeley,
have decided to
step down from
Tim Sintes
the trust, but
they are urging
others to come on
board and get the New Zealand
Sandcastle Competition going
again.
Sintes said the earthquake
repairs to the pier during 2017-
2018 played a role in putting the
competition on hold, as the construction
equipment and vehicles
took up space in the car parks and
on the beach.
Sintes said it was now hoped
others would step up.
“We’ve been involved for quite
a while and we’ve had a lull of
getting over the earthquakes . .
. then we’ve had Covid,” Sintes
said.
“We’ve put too much work in
to let it go, we’d like to pass it onto
someone else.”
The trust was formed in 2010
as a way to bring people back to
BUILD: Previous New Zealand Sandcastle Competition
entries at New Brighton Beach.
New Brighton with the competition
running every Waitangi
weekend.
Sintes said it attracted professional
sandcastle builders from
overseas, as well as TV coverage,
and saw roughly 20,000 people
flocking to the beach to watch
and to participate.
“We started off from scratch
and a hell of a lot of work was
done,” he said.
“We put a lot of effort into it to
make it successful.”
Waitai Coastal-Burwood
Community Board member Jo
Zervos expressed her interest in
getting involved with the trust
and is encouraging others to
contact her if they want to help
with bringing the competition
back.
She said she’s already had a
few people reach out to let her
know they are keen to get behind
bringing the event back.
Sports stars shine at St Margaret’s
WITH THE resumption
of international sports, St
Margaret’s College has a strong
contingent of students wearing
the silver fern when they head
overseas to compete in their
respective sports.
Director of sport Helen
Belcher said while SMC girls
have regularly represented New
Zealand in rowing and tennis,
there has been growing interest
in basketball and kayaking, and
orienteering and fencing have
been introduced as new codes at
the school.
“International competition is
hugely important for the girls
– it exposes them to a higher
level of play and develops their
skills. It gives our athletes
the opportunity to combine
overseas travel and play the
sport they love while having a
strong support system around
them. For those of our girls
looking at applying for overseas
universities, it will enhance
their applications.”
Belcher said that competing
internationally helps the girls
to develop confidence, gives
athletes the opportunity to
experience other cultures and
perspectives, and to develop
independence and adaptability.
“These athletes are particularly
humble about their achievements
and grateful for the opportunities
that are available to them
this year.”
The girls heading or already
offshore are:
• Ivy Brown is in the under-17
national basketball team vying
for honours in the under-16
women’s FIBA Asia Cup in
Jordan. Finishing in the top
four will earn them a spot in the
under-17 women’s FIBA World
Cup, which is held next month in
Hungary.
• Katherine Babington is in the
NZ Junior World Orienteering
Championship team of six young
women and six young men competing
at the upcoming Junior
World Orienteering Champs in
Portugal.
• Grace Farrell and Jemma
Burrowes are part of the under-19
New Zealand women’s
eight competing at the 2022
World Rowing under-19 championships
in Varese, Italy, from
July 27 to 31.
• Lucia Gale made the under-15
tennis team that will
compete in Queensland at the
Australian teams event.
• Milo Neil has been on guard
in Sydney at the Oceania and
Australian cadet (under-17)
fencing championship. She’s
also has been selected for
the New Zealand team in
the Commonwealth fencing
championship (under-17/cadet
grade) to be held in London,
August 9-20.
• Brie Cox has won selection
for the New Zealand under-18
sprint kayaking team and will
compete in the Asia Pacific Cup
in Japan, September 29-October
2. She is also in the Canoe Racing
New Zealand talent ID training
squad.
• Sisters Katherine and Anna
(Left to right): Ivy
Brown, Katherine
Babington, Anna
Babington, Brie
Cox, Lucia Gale
(kneeling), Milo
Neil, Grace Farrell,
Jemma Burrowes.
Babington are in the New
Zealand schools orienteering
team travelling to the Australian
schools championships in
September. Both girls are also
competing at the European
youth orienteering champs in
Budapest in early July although
not representing New Zealand.
• Ruby Young is shortly heading
to Australia and Fiji to compete
in under-18 International
Tennis Federation tournaments,
although isn’t part of a New
Zealand team as players enter
themselves.
Light at the End of the Tunnel
was born out of the pandemic
after Covid-19 stymied plans to
produce Starlight Express at College
this year.
College director of drama
Hannah Clarkson and director of
theatre arts Peter Rutherford say
all the disruption of the past year
has prompted a quick change of
plans that has resulted in a wonderful
new production.
“The students have been racing
from sports practices and highpressure
games back to the stage
for rehearsals, costume fittings
and make-up tutorials. They have
brought fresh bounce and deft
steps, along with magnificent
voices and fine acting skills.”
Light at the End of the Tunnel
will be held from July 5 to 7 at
Club bowled over by award
MORRISON AVENUE Bowling
Club has been named 2021-2022
club of the year at the recent
Bowls Canterbury annual awards
dinner.
This is the first time the club
has won, although it was a
finalist three years ago.
President Ray Blyth said the
club was very proud of the award,
as it was the result of much hard
work by many members.
Blyth said: “Many hundreds
of hours of volunteer work has
contributed to the club’s success.”
The club had another win at
the awards night with Tom
Hogg named 2021-2022 official
of the year for the second year
running.
Blyth said Hogg has worked
tirelessly for both the club and
Bowls Canterbury over many
years as a club member and
as an umpire, and the club
congratulates Hogg on this
deserved achievement.
He said the club has been on
its Morrison Ave site for over
60 years, and made the decision
several years ago to improve
both the natural greens and its
facilities.
The improvements saw it host
play in both the 2022 Summerset
Nationals and the New Zealand
Blind Lawn Bowling Association
championships.
On the local front, the club has
hosted many events for Bowls
Canterbury, including the very
successful 2021-2022 Champion
AWARDED: Morrison Avenue Bowling Club president Ray
Blyth with the Bowls Canterbury 2021-2022 club of the
year certificate.
of Champions finals weekend,
where teams from clubs across
the region played for the
honour of being the Canterbury
“champion of champions”.
Blyth thanked Bowls
Canterbury for the club of the
year award. He said it could not
have been achieved without the
many volunteers who did an
amazing job.
All clubs needed this volunteer
base and “we were very fortunate
Thursday June 30 2022
at Morrison Avenue to have such
a group”.
• Morrison Ave is a
boutique club, with
excellent natural greens,
and welcomes new
members. It offers plenty
of options to play bowls,
both in summer and
winter in the warmth of
the clubrooms. For more
Symbolic gate finds fitting new home
• By John Cosgrove
A SYMBOLIC red torii gate once
located in the gardens by the main
stand at Riccarton Racecourse
has began its move to a new life at
Halswell Quarry Park.
Originally constructed in 2012
as part of the annual Japan Day
festivities, the three-metre-high
gate was placed in open air storage
when the buildings around it
were demolished.
Members of the Christchurch-
Kurashiki Sister City Committee
began the process of relocating
the gate from its racecourse
storage site to the park, where it
will be restored and put up in the
Kurashiki garden.
It will become the gateway to
one of the city council’s six sister
city gardens located in the park
area.
Former committee chairman
David Bolam-Smith said they
were first moving the gate to a
more secure site, inside away
from the elements.
ON THE MOVE: Christchurch-Kurashiki Sister City Committee
“There, over the next few
members Gus Fahy, Andrew McGeorge and David Bolam-
years, it will be cleaned and restored
before we reinstall it into
RAY WHITE PAPANUI NEWS
How to present your property for
winter-warming sales
Winter is an ideal season for selling your
home. For one, there are typically fewer
listings than in the warmer months,
coupled with the same numbers of
potential buyers.
Secondly, home buyers know you mean
business when selling your property in
winter. Without the benefit of blooming
spring gardens and inviting summer
temperatures, the unique qualities of
your property can come to the fore.
We cover the highlights and areas
of promotion designed to sell your
home well in the traditional season of
hibernation.
Selling tips that reap rewards:
Clear the home of clutter
A clutter-free home provides the
illusion of extra space and also paints a
picture of potential uses or scenarios for
interested buyers. It pays to be ruthless
in the culling process, where clear, clean,
uncluttered spaces always supplant
sentimentality. If you can afford to move
much-loved but extraneous furniture and
objects into storage, you are advised to
do so.
A neat garden should define your great
outdoors
With the absence of leafy greens and
bright blooms, winter gardens are
traditionally spare. This is why they
should be presented in meticulous detail.
Removing a smoke alarm in your rental
could cost you $4000
Part of our normal 3 monthly inspection
process which we conduct every three
months is to ensure that the smoke
alarms in our rental properties are in
place and in working order. However
over the past few weeks I have been
alarmed at the amount of smoke alarms
that have been removed by tenants.
We know some of the alarms will be
beeping at some ungodly hour of the
night resulting in them being pulled down
to quieten them, what seems to happen is
that there is either a time delay in getting
them back up, or they don’t go up again at
all! This creates a major safety issue.
Part of our induction process with our
tenants is advising them that if they have
Ensure that hedges are trimmed,
overhanging branches are pruned
and the weeding is regularly
maintained.
If you have a spa, make sure that
it is cleaned and/or covered at all
times.
Mowing lawns and the removal of
inappropriate outdoor furniture
also provide for extra ground
cover in your garden.
Keep your interiors warm and
inviting
Creating a cosy atmosphere, combined
with the suggestion of reduced energy
bills, is essential for ambience and
savings on running costs. Fireplaces are
an obvious example for inspirational
warmth, scene-setting and energy saving.
Similarly, the aroma of winter spices,
such as clove and cardamom, the scent of
freshly baked goodies, and the additional
background music, creates a warm and
inviting atmosphere that can prove
irresistible to aspirational buyers.
Complete any DIY projects before
listing your property
It’s imperative that decking, painting and
landscaping projects are completed to
a high finish before the Open Homes
begin. There’s little that can enhance
this process quite like a professionally
finished deck, paintwork or a pristine
garden with the multi-seasonal appeal.
any battery alarms in their property, they
need to ensure they have a spare battery
so that they can replace it immediately
and reinstate the alarm.
Most people will likely know that it is a
legislative requirement for landlords
to ensure there is at least one working
smoke alarm within 3 metres of each
bedroom in a rental property, and for
any new alarms to be a long-life photoelectronic
alarm. Failure to provide
alarms and ensure they remain working
can result in huge fines for landlords,
not to mention the danger to both the
tenants and the property.
What people may not know is that there
is also a responsibility on the tenant, and
Feature Property
Shine a light on your home’s best
features
With the shorter days and reduced
natural light of winter, it’s important to
display your property’s selling points
to your advantage. Showcasing openplan
spaces with zoned lighting works
wonders for opening up a world of
possibilities to potential buyers. Large
kitchens, dining rooms and living rooms
can be staged to feature areas within
wide-open spaces. These include home
offices, entertaining hubs and children’s
areas.
according to the Residential Tenancies
Act they may not tamper with the
alarm. Tampering does of course include
removing it. If a tenant is found to have
tampered with an alarm they could be
fined up to $4,000, and of course once
again they are endangering themselves.
It is important to remember, whether
you are renting, or in your own home,
that even the long-life alarms can fail, so
ensure they are checked regularly, after
all smoke alarms save lives. Keep safe.
