SHED
Thanks to the following sponsors/supporters,
Men’s Shed Geraldine has been operating since
October 2021: Timaru District Council,
Aotearoa Gaming Trust, Environment Canterbury,
Mid &South CanterburyTrust,NPD Geraldine,
and FreshChoice Geraldine among others.
We are up and running in the old
Borough Council Depot at 117 Talbot Street
(behind the Scout Den), and meet at
10am on Thursdays and Saturdays.
The Men’s Shed Trust Geraldine,
administered by five trustees, has, at present,
around 20 paid-up associates. Acomprehensive
Mission Statement is available at the shed.
We have progressively been tidying
the building and making it fit for purpose.
Thanks to all (including other MenzSheds) who have
donated electrical tools, hand tools, timber, paint,
and furniture et cetera. We must have as many
screwdrivers and drill bits as ITM Geraldine.
Most items will be put to use in the shed, but items
we cannot use will be sold for fundraising.
We “Shedders” are proud of what
we have achieved to date.

Preserving our cultural heritage
Last Saturday, the RogerMahanHeritage
Centre received its latest acquisition,
a1909 International Buggy. The 113-yearold
vehicle is in goodoriginalcondition,
havingbeenwelllooked afterbyits previous
two owners.
The InternationalHarvesterCompany
made these vehicles. With the back seat
removed,the American-madecar converts
into apick-up. Peter Lyttle, chair of the
centres management board, says that
thisbuggyended its workinglifehauling
coal for the Lyndhurst Engineering
workshop in the 1950s before being

sold in 1995.
The centre is administered by the
NewZealand Cultural Heritage Charitable
Trust. Pageone of the trusts prospectus
states, oneofits core objectives [is]
to promote the retention of items of
cultural heritage in NewZealand. Roger
Mahan says that he is pleased to acquire
this rare vehicle. The prospectus also
notesthat theownerwantedittoremain
in New Zealand; had the vehicle been
advertised on the open market, it would
almost certainly have been sold toan
international buyer. Roger says that he

knowsthe family andhas beenaware of
the vehicle, for 50 years -nomake
that 60 years.
The RogerMahan Heritage Centre at
195 Main North Roadisoften open on a
Saturday. Petersaystheyare looking for
volunteers interested in transport and
machinery fromhorse-drawn buggies to
heavyearthmoving gear and everything
in between. There are many roles to fill
in looking afterthe collection and opening
it to the public.
