LUMOS NOX SALON
"Over the last two years we have had to buy so many single use items between
gloves, masks, plastic wrap, cups etc. that we were concerned about being
able to up our sustainability," says Lumos Nox Salon onwer Twylla Jane,
REDKEN Artist. "We joined Green Circle Salons and were able to recycle up
to 95% of our waste in conjunction with our local recycling municipality. We
can even recycle excess haircolor left behind in bowls and bottles instead of
flushing it into our sewer systems. Green circle recycles metals (foils, color
tubes, hairspray cans etc) as well as PPE, hair and more! A small fee is added
to our guest’s charge to cover the cost of Green Circle and any leftover funds
help us purchase sustainable items and equipment for the salon such as lights
and appliances. What do they do with all the recycled items? They make
bike frames, hair booms, insulation and they even sent us new recycling bins
made from hair! They’re so cool."
SCRUMMI WATER SAVIOURS
Salons using Scrummi disposable towels have
saved more than 20 million gallons of chemically
contaminated water in the past year while avoiding
the release of 6 million kilograms of CO² into the
atmosphere. At the same time, they have stopped
millions of microplastic fragments from being
flushed into rivers and oceans. All by ending the
tedious process of in-salon laundering. The stats
show that salons that switch from traditional cotton
towels (which are often reinforced with plastic
to make them last longer and resist staining) to
Scrummi also save thousands of dollars previously
wasted on laundry.
VISH WASTE
WARRIORS
Two Ohio salons dominate the list of top
Vish Waste Warriors, according to the team
behind the color management app. Indeed,
Vish named the best in the industry for
boosting color profits and protecting the
planet by ending color waste. Rêvé Salon
& Spa in Sylvania, Toledo, slashed color
costs by $400 a week, making it the top
Salon Waste Warrior, with three of its team
in the top five. But Karen Welch, owner of
SoZo HAIR by Bajon Salon & Spa in West
Chester, Cincinnati, clinched the top spot
for personally cutting her color waste by
half and bringing the average amount she
spends on color per service to the lowest in
North America. Her efficiency impacted
the whole salon!
