donated a considerable amount of money to 

the chairmans chosen charity; this year donated 

to help the people of the Ukraine. Derek 

Ferminger also gave his time to featuring him in 

his feature this issue. It’s an interesting success 

story, one that hasn’t been without tragedy, you 

can read the full story on page 10.

journey that is getting closer to completion and

The Practical Element 

As Professional Recovery Magazine goes to press an announcement has been 

made by the DVSA that remote learning for Driver CPC (which first began in the 

COVID lockdown) can continue. 

A 

survey conducted by the DVSA reports that, “There is an appetite 

for remote training to continue - 90% of drivers stated they would 

be interested in future CPC training delivered remotely, except 

practical training, with 64% of trainers and 53% (of centres) preparing 

their businesses to continue remote training.” 

“Therefore, DVSA has decided it will commit to long-term delivery 

of suitable forms of periodic training via remote platforms. This will not 

extend to subject matter that does not lend itself to remote delivery - for 

example, a practical or in-cab element,” informs JAUPT. 

When considering a training method, the Institute always considers 

what type of learner is sitting the course? There are four main learning 

styles; 

Auditory 

One who learns by hearing and listening. Auditory learners learn best 

when information is presented to them for example via lectures and 

group discussions. 

Visual 

One who learns by reading or seeing pictures, however, a visual learner 

does not necessarily respond well to photos or videos, rather needing 

information via different visual aids such as patterns and shapes. 

Reading/writing 

Learners consume information best when it’s in words, whether that is 

by writing it down or reading it. These individuals usually perform very 

well on written assignments. 

Kinesthetic 

Individuals who best learn a concept by touching and doing. A kinesthetic 

learner is a “hands-on” learner who learns better when some type of 

physical activity is involved, they remember by recreating it themselves. 

The best way to present information to a kinesthetic learner is through 

personal experience, practice, examples. 

Most of the IVR VR modules actually cross into all four of the learning 

styles but obviously the Institute has a firm lean towards kinesthetic in 

the belief that it most matches those who work as a vehicle recovery 

operator (VRO). In order to satisfy the kinesthetic learning style IVR VR 

modules are predominately delivered face to face. That is not to say 

there is no place for online courses, some non-practical/theory based 

subject matter can be delivered remotely effectively. 

An important point is that delivering good online training is a skill in 

itself, it takes practice, there are some pitfalls and not all trainers are 

good at it. 

In the DVSA survey there was the, “Sense of a loss of normal control 

from trainers, who said that it was hard to moderate sessions. It was 

easy for participants to be distracted, and it wasn’t guaranteed that all 

participants would have a reliable internet connection, this sentiment 

was also echoed by the drivers themselves.” 

Having the right technology 

The survey highlighted that technology was not a problem for the 

approximate 1000 drivers completing the survey, who used laptops, 

desktops, tablets and phones but it should also be noted that the 

survey was completed online, so it can be assumed that the data is 

from those who already use technology and therefore the survey 

excludes those who do not have or use technology. 

Not having a good internet signal/bandwidth 

Internet signal and connection problems can seriously affect and 

interrupt training especially where there is a lot of video included. 

Online learning is a good platform to include those in remote areas 

that would not find it easy to travel to a course but the flip side of that 

is it is often those in remote areas that have a poor internet signal. 

Screen time 

Both trainers and drivers talked about the fatigue they experienced by 

attending long sessions in front of their screen. This will be especially

true of those who are used to being physical and therefore learning 

could diminish. Training could be split over more days but that could 

cause dedicated training time and course completion issues. 

Counteracting some of the pitfalls 

The Institute only offers an online option to those modules that 

lend themselves well to online training and the ITSSAR IVR approved 

trainers are assessed delivering online before being able to deliver an 

online version of a course. 

The IVR keeps participant numbers low so that they can keep a 

check on student engagement and moderate throughout and the 

option of doing the same module face to face remains for those 

VROs that are not technologically minded. Remembering that training 

is not just to tick a box to gain a contract, but for an employer to 

ensure their staff are as safe as they can be when carrying out their 

role. 

Online or not? 

Face to face lends itself to an organic, cross-pollination of 

experience and ideas, which should not be under-estimated. 

Sometimes the benefits a VRO gets from meeting others face to face, 

allowing free conversation and technique sharing is as important as 

the training itself. 

Could the Institute put more modules online – yes it could but 

there would undoubtably be a lowering of standards, something the 

IVR is not prepared to sacrifice. 

So, what does this mean for the Institute of Vehicle Recovery. 

It has a small offering of online courses which will remain. It will 

continue to consider and investigate appropriate methods of delivery 

but at this moment in time, due to the health and safety nature of 

operating machinery, often in difficult and dangerous conditions, the 

Institute is duty bound to continue to deliver training to the highest 

of industry standards, and to continue to offer the majority of the 

Sector Scheme National Training Scheme through face-to-face 

means, which includes lots of practical practice opportunities for the 

roadside VRO, followed by a practical assessment. 

At this moment in time the DVSA and the Institute are on the same 

page, there is a place for online training but with a precautionary 

warning, OK for some courses but not where there is a practical 

element, the Institute advise not to compromise on the importance 

of that practical element.

AA relaunches 

best-selling

The AA has announced the relaunch of 

their bestselling Atlas range, with motorists’ 

favourites revised and updated for 2023.

If you cast your mind back to March 

2022, The Crowne Plaza hotel Stratfordupon-Avon 

was the venue for this year’s 

IVR AGM, for those members and guests 

who regularly attend this event you will 

know the Institutes chairman nominates his 

charity for the event. 

Any fundraising on the day especially 

with regards to the evening awards dinner 

will go directly to his chosen charity. For 

several years now the chairman’s chosen 

charity has been Prostate Cancer UK, but 

this year a bit of a change in tradition as 

you might say, with all our minds focused 

on the horrors we see with every news 

report on the war in Ukraine and the 

unbearable situation for the families having 

to endure the constant bombardment from 

Putin and his Russian troops. So, without 

any surprise the theme around the room 

focused heavily on the colours of Ukraine 

with the Chairman’s chosen charity the 

Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine 

Humanitarian Appeal. 

There were several very good donations 

from IVR members and industry supporters 

to add to the auction pot, RED showed 

extreme generosity in donating a set of 

Collins dollies along with the many recovery 

specific equipment prizes that RED donated 

for the raffle. Recoverysafe Training donated 

a two day training course. But in line with the 

magazine and its popularity, by far the best

Ahmet Kocak, of Ceyhan Recovery UK Ltd, 

I hear some of you say, who’s that, well he’s 

the latest recovery truck manufacturing to 

add to your approved suppliers list. Based 

in Enfield, North London, Ahmet came 

from Turkey to the UK back in 2002, at that 

time he brought his heavy and light metal 

manufacturing skills with him to apply to 

his father’s engineering company that was 

based in Hackney. His father came to the 

UK a few years earlier, in 1996 in fact and 

soon setup his own engineering company, 

Hackney Engineering. 

Engineering skills 

Ahmet obtained his engineering skills and 

experience working for his father and uncle 

back in Turkey from the age of 10. Now in 

the UK working again for his father, things 

were very good. The heavy engineering 

work they were undertaking was pushing the 

boundaries of heavy steel works within the 

construction industry. 

After saying goodbye to his father late one 

afternoon with a “see you in the morning 

dad,” tragedy struck, sadly Ahmet’s father 

died that night, leaving Ahmet a broken man, 

not knowing which way to turn. 

Of course, his story does not end there. I 

guess this is perhaps the beginning. Ahmet 

fell back on one of the things he knew best. 

He is also a car mechanic and an MOT tester, 

so he started his own workshop and MOT 

centre. That soon grew to three workshops, 

and of course a recovery truck or two. 

Best described as joining the dots, Ahmet 

thought, “I’m better off building my own 

recovery truck, after all that’s what we were 

doing back at the factory in Turkey” and 

that’s just what he did. 

Alongside his workshops he started his 

recovery vehicle manufacturing and set 

up Ceyhan Recovery UK Ltd. Based in 

Enfield, the company was incorporated 

in November 2013 and has grown year on 

year, until last year when Ahmet sold his 

workshop business to reinvest his capital 

and to concentrate on recovery vehicle 

manufacturing. 

His investment went into the purchasing 

of the freehold premises in Enfield, EN3 

8,300 sq ft workshop. Moving the operation 

from a much smaller workshop a mile or two 

away. The smaller workshop Ahmet is also 

keeping for now. As well as purchasing the 

freehold to his main workshop, he has also 

invested in new engineering machinery and 

lots of it. 

Ahmet’s manufacturing model is not new 

to our industry, as not all recovery bodies 

are manufactured and hand built directly to 

the chassis and subframe, no, so often the 

auction prize was front page of Professional 

Recovery Magazine issue 363, and with it an 

editorial piece to match, kindly donated by 

Paul Gregory and his team at PPL. 

As always with these auctions the bidding 

started slowly, but with Mac Hobbs holding 

the microphone and Nick Ovenden as his 

side kick, that was never going to be the 

case. Between them this main prize bidding 

gathered momentum with several regular 

faces bidding against each other, as well as 

a new face to the room, a guest on John 

Gatward’s table, a new face to some but 

not for all operators, as several of you are 

already buying from his organisation. 

An interesting question - if it were 

possible to buy the front page of the 

magazine, along with an editorial about 

you and your business, what price would 

you pay? After all, every print run lands 

on over 2,000 desks and after you have 

read it, it makes a great poster feature in 

your reception. Ahmet Kocak of Ceyhan 

Recovery UK Ltd showed extreme 

generosity with his four figure sum for the 

Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, with fantastic 

support from everyone in the room, and 

what a round of applause it received, it 

didn’t end there because I think Ahmet 

bought everyone at the bar a drink or two 

as well.

body is manufactured off-site and shipped in, then assembled to 

the customers’ requirements. 

Boniface using Miller products, Century recovery bodies is a good 

example of that process, well Ahmet and his uncle Yahya Ceyhan 

designed theses bodies in Turkey. Ahmet explained to me how each 

body and subframe is specifically designed to fit each manufacturer. 

This great design touch means when the subframe is fitted there is 

no drilling, because all the mounting holes are pre-drilled to match 

the holes that are already in the chassis, with each detailed drawing 

matching precisely the chassis its intended to fit. 

Remembering these bodies are all manufactured from steel. Now 

a great touch, each body is fully galvanised before it is painted in a 

specially prepared primer for galvanised metals. The paint finish ontop 

of this primer is like glass and because of the galvanising process 

it is guaranteed not to rust, yes you heard that correctly a recovery 

body that will not rust! 

Delivered from his uncles manufacturing factory in Turkey in 

a ready to piece-build kit, described by Ahmet as “Like buying 

the precision manufactured recovery body, a bit like buying your 

bedroom furniture from Ikea, with every hole, pin, clip, nut and 

bolt precision made”. The day I visited he had three trucks in 

build, boasting a five day turn around once he has the chassis and 

painted body in his workshop. Providing you have the full chassis 

specification then 6–8-week order from factory to delivery. 

There were four bodies carefully stacked at the back of his 

workshop, all ready and waiting for customers chassis to arrive,

with a container arriving that afternoon with a further six bodies, 

fully prepared to customer’s specific requirements. Ahmet also 

demonstrated to me his own design, manual sliding winch if that’s 

your thing but whatever your specification is, reelmart or just a fixed 

winch Ahmet will happily accommodate. 

As I’ve already said, these recovery bodies are all manufactured 

from steel and to date he has designs for 7.5t to 18t chassis. The 

12t chassis he demonstrated to me was able to boast a payload of 

5.8 tonne and a loading angle just over 10 degrees. These are all 

standard tilt and slide bodies, however if your prepared to wait a bit, 

then Ahmet has an SLA prototype that is currently going through 

extensive testing before it passes and gets certified receiving his CE

ISO standards 

There is a big part of Ahmet’s story that fits so similar to the two 

big industry suppliers, a mechanic/technician one day with an 

engineering and design background, to manufacturing your own 

machine. I guess the big difference today is that you have to comply 

fully to design and manufacturing ISO standards, when 50 years ago 

you could do it your own way - building it and learning on the job. 

An impressive and tidy operation for such a young business, but 

don’t take it from me as I’ve not operated his equipment and I don’t 

suppose I ever will, having hung up my keys years ago, perhaps the 

best accolade will be the comments from a few of his customers 

and some business names you will all know.

I asked Ahmet, was he going to have a stand at the Tow Show this 

year? He thought not as he was still concentrating heavily on his 

customers and making sure these early days of manufacturing was 

all about customer focus, but he was intending on being there next 

year. I suggested he reconsider as I thought he had a lot to offer. 

I contacted the IVR for their comments on Ahmet’s generous 

bid. “The AGM Gala Dinner is a great time to celebrate our industry, 

however it always has a serious note in its fundraising for a worthy 

cause. Everyone in the room this year could relate to the plight of 

those who were at the time fleeing Ukraine. We would like to thank 

Ahmet for his substantial bid, and we hope that he enjoys seeing his 

story and his vehicle in print, as much as the readers of Professional 

Recovery enjoy hearing more about his life and his vehicle

Update from 

Richard Goddard, President, PROF 

By the time this magazine has landed on your desk PROFCon 22 

will be less than a week away and for those of you that have taken 

up your invitation to attend the most relevant recovery industry 

conference since PROFCon 21, in my opinion you’re in for one hell of a 

conference - and a free lunch. Unlike the free miles, free storage and 

free redeliveries we undertake at a cost to ourselves, this is actually a 

FREE lunch! 

Although slightly nervous at providing such a high profile industry 

platform, hopefully it will be a benefit to us all. The opening presentation 

will come from the NPCC, and the subject will be Police Contracts and 

Statutory Fees. 

To my knowledge this will be the first direct communication between 

independent industry VRO’s and stakeholders, at least since ACPO 

became the NPCC, and its long overdue to be honest. 

Contrary to recent bulletins, threats in the media, and vague 

references to discussions and dialogue which broke down last year, the 

real discussion meetings and presentations have been between PROF, 

the NPCC, and the Home Office, who gave an excellent insight into their 

prospective future intentions, but are yet to be properly finalised. 

The strategic partnership agreement signed between the NPCC 

and PROF, have been the culmination of committed input from the 

NPCC, to work with the recovery industry on all things vehicle recovery, 

starting with the important issue of statutory charges and police 

contracts. 

Because of our partnership agreement, we have had opportunities 

to make a case for the industry to 43 police forces and the home office 

who were present. 

Now the Police have put together an excellent presentation that will 

update and communicate directly with police contractors, beginning a 

partnership platform for us both. 

It is my understanding that further to our last presentations at the 

NPCC, some police forces have already been proactive in response to 

our points and are having positive dialogue with contractors regarding 

admin fees and statutory charges. 

A little bird tells me Durham have been engaging with their operators 

and if I’m not mistaken, Durham is the domain of a certain Proctologist 

that does not see a need for PROF. 

I’m looking forward to this generational change in the historic 

relationship between the recovery industry and all of our colleagues in 

the emergency services. Which brings me onto our brave colleagues in 

the fire service. 

The NFCC have been swift and proactive in joining the NPCC, 

in becoming partners with PROF. The fire services play a vital and 

dangerous role in responding to roadside RTC’s, fires, and the real 

threat of explosion. The advent of more EV’s make those dangers even 

more likely and they’ll be the ones securing the safety of those vehicles 

for us to recover. Both of these emergency services will be for the 

first time presenting at a recovery industry conference on the same 

platform.

A welcome addition to the agenda will be MIB, no not will Smith or 

the bailiffs but a very relevant presentation regarding our day to day 

operations. You will be enthralled by how it effects our industry, and I 

immediately declared an interest of the recovery industry as victims of 

crime and fraud. You’ll have to be there to see it I’m afraid I cannot say 

more. 

After your FREE LUNCH, PROF’s third strategic partner UKRO will 

give their presentation. UKRO already play a very relevant role in the 

recovery industry, and as I’ve said before, have an important role to play 

in educating and advising us on many subjects vehicle recovery. 

Last but never least, PROF’s most recent partner is the IVR. Standards 

and safety are vital to our staff, our colleagues and the public we 

all serve. Generational changes, in climate, Smart Motorways and 

EV’s mean an ever increasing level in operational training safety and 

standards. Important in every agreement or contract we sign, relevant

to our every increasing insurance costs. I never tire of hearing of how 

we are working together to improve standards, and the IVR will be the 

closing presentation given at PROFCon22, there is no substitute for 

high standards!

PROF is not a membership association; we do not receive

POLICE CONTRACTS 

UPDATE 

Ongoing from the presentation given at the NPCC 

conference we understand that some police forces 

have been proactive and provided financial support to 

operators. In the Northeast Northumbria Police have 

offered financial support to all operators for an initial 

six month period and its understood that other forces 

in the north have this under review. 

This has been welcomed by operators in the 

Northeast and one commented on the news saying. 

“After discussions with Northumbria Police the 

financial support given is greatly appreciated by 

our business. Northumbria Police understand the 

difficulties operators have encountered recently 

and consider vehicle recovery as a front-line service. 

Reinvestment in specialist facilities, overheads, 

vehicles, staff retention and training comes at a cost 

to provide a safe and efficient provision. PROF have 

represented the industry nationally at a senior level and 

provided a full professional insight of what is required 

to deliver safe, specialist vehicle recovery to the police 

in this current day. We hope that the pending review on 

statutory fees also takes all of this into consideration”.

expanded with a widely applicable PANTHER T29-12. An attractively 

priced PLd certified transmitter with 8 buttons was already available in 

the Panther series, the PN-T19-2. The new 12-button transmitter is also

Yorkshire Rescue Service take 

delivery of J&J VRS Evolution II 

The driving force behind Yorkshire 

Rescue Services Ltd, Andrew Alderson, 

has continued his commitment to 

investing in the business ensuring its 

development and growth. 

Initially YRS’s main focus was on rescue 

and recovery, operating from their main 

site based in Leeds and covering both 

urban and rural districts including Bradford,

weekend for 

Laser Tools Racing 

The Sir Jackie Stewart Classic Presented by Rolex was held over the weekend of June 18-19 

at the evocative location of Thirlestane Castle near Lauder in the Borders of Scotland. 

The Laser Tools Racing team members 

including Aiden Moffat and Dexter 

Patterson (British Touring Car 

Championship) and Logan Hannah and Chloe 

Grant (GB4 Championship) were there with 

their cars and joined Sir Jackie Stewart and 

other high-profile guests at one of Scotland’s 

finest stately homes. 

The weekend focussed on live motorsport 

action and an award-winning car show, all 

in aid of Race Against Dementia. The event 

showcased the career and achievements 

of three-time FIA Formula 1 Drivers’ World 

Champion, Sir Jackie Stewart OBE, and 

gave visitors the chance to explore his 

remarkable career with plentiful displays of 

his cars – including his championship winning 

F1 cars – and memorabilia. Plus the Scottish 

Motor Racing Club offered exciting (and 

noisy!) live motorsport action as classic and 

contemporary cars, including Formula 1 cars, 

hurtled up the castle’s sweeping driveway. 

Aiden Moffat commented: “I was only here 

for the smoke and noise! Ha ha! It really was a 

fun weekend at the Sir Jackie Stewart Classic 

event, with even Sir Jackie himself taking his 

old F1 car up the hill, and the noise of the 

Redbull F1 car — OMG! A truly incredible event 

for Scottish motorsport fans, and all for a very 

worthy cause: the Race Against Dementia, the 

charity founded by Sir Jackie Stewart.” 

Logan Hannah said: “It was a fantastic event 

to be a part of and an incredible opportunity 

to be able to meet so many big names in 

Scottish motorsport! The interaction with the 

general public was fantastic and it was great 

to have the cars up at the front of the castle 

and right in the middle of the action with 

Redbull and Sir Jackie Stewart’s car!” 

“I knew the weekend would be fantastic, 

having visited the castle, driven my GB4 

car up the driveway, and having met Sir 

Jackie Stewart and Edward Maitland-Carew 

previously, but it exceeded my expectations. 

There was so much to see and do, the crowds 

were phenomenal, and Thirlestane Castle is 

just the most perfect venue for this event

R&S Recovery Services 

About six weeks ago, R&S Recovery Services were called out to transport an Airstream Caravan. It’s 

American and very posh inside. These caravans are of high value and was due to go inside a truck to 

go to Ibiza, but unfortunately when we arrived to pick it up the company had given the wrong measurements 

and it was too wide to fit in the container. 

As such we had to take it back the company who then were organising a flatbed rather than the 

box to ship the caravan over. Bit of a wasted day but at least the sun was shining! It just shows how 

important measurements are on the larger vehicles we move.
