Seventy books later and
Bishop is still creating
Award-winning
children’s book author
and illustrator Gavin
Bishop tells New
Zealand’s stories for
children. He talks
to reporter Emily
Moorhouse about
his lifelong passion
for art, his first time
seeing his books on
sale and using his
grandchildren’s ideas
for new books
GAVIN BISHOP knew he
wanted to be an artist when he
was four.
Seventy-two years on, more
than 70 published books and
countless national awards later,
he is continuing to do just that.
Bishop was born in
Invercargill, but moved to
Christchurch to study at the
Canterbury University School
of Fine Arts and graduated with
an honours degree in painting
in 1976.
He then became an art
teacher at Te Aratai College,
formerly Linwood College,
before moving to Christ’s
College, when another art
teacher suggested he write a
book for children.
“It was kind of weird because
it was just out of the blue that
this person said this and it
struck a chord with me,” Bishop
said.
“I suddenly realised that was
something I’d been thinking
about doing for a really long
time, but I had never got around
to doing it.”
English publishing company
Oxford University Press (OUP)
expressed it was looking for
material that had a “strong
New Zealand flavour” and had
representatives visit Wellington
at the time.
Bishop liked the idea of this,
as he hadn’t grown up reading
New Zealand books.
“When I was a child all of
the books I read came from
England, Australia, America
mainly. It was a very exciting
proposal.”
Students rack up success
in netball and hockey
A RECORD number of St
Margaret’s College girls
competed in two triumphant
Canterbury teams that won their
respective national titles during
the recent term break.
Ten students made under 18
regional selection – five in netball
and five in hockey.
Netballers Te Ata Hassan,
Bridie James, Ashlyn Koce,
Cara Mustchin, Josie Seymour
triumphed in the Canterbury
U18A netball team, claiming
top honours with the Margaret
Forysth Cup.
Niamh McKenzie, Sorell Shand,
Phoebe Spear, Mezzy Surridge,
and Molly Williams lined up for
the winning U18A girls hockey
team.
Director of sport Helen Belcher
says the girls’ achievements reflected
hard work and commitment.
“These are both stunning
performances and we’re so proud
of all the girls have achieved. It’s
not easy balancing the rigours
of sport with academic requirements
but the girls are very dedicated
and deserve success.”
St Margaret’s has had a strong
contingent representing New
Zealand overseas recently and
in the upcoming months, in
basketball, orienteering, rowing,
tennis, kayaking, softball and
fencing.
National championship
for Medbury School racer
ZACH TUCKER is top of his
class again, thriving in his
favourite learning experience
outside the classroom.
The 11-year-old kart racer
has claimed his first national
schools championship title in
Invercargill,
winning
the Vortex
Mini ROK
competition at
Otatara.
Representing
Medbury
School, Tucker
recorded a convincing victory
in the mixed grid format which
saw drivers receive a random
spot before each race.
He drew ninth, second, fifth
and eighth and won every race,
meaning he had the luxury of
sitting out the fifth and final
heat on July 16.
“It was really cool to win as I
came second in 2019 and 2021,”
said Tucker, who was also the
recipient of the championships’
Bruce McLaren award.
Tucker, who started karting
as a six-year-old, was selected
to represent New Zealand at the
annual ROK Cup Superfinal in
Italy in October after defending
his Vortex Mini ROK title in
Wellington last month.
His preparations for that
challenge ramps up across the
Tasman when he seeks his first
Australian crown at the City
Zach Tucker
of Melbourne Titles from
August 5-7. He preps for that
assignment at a Melbourne club
day on Sunday.
Tucker was not the only
Canterbury racer to top the
podium with Scott McLaren
(Rolleston College) also able to
skip his final race in the 125cc
Rotax Max Light category and
still win after recording three
wins and a third.
Iver Spence (The Cathedral
Grammar School), Henry Fisher
(Halswell School) and Chris
White (Christchurch Boys’ High
School) were third in the Cadet
ROK, Vortex Mini ROK and
125cc Rotax Max Junior class
respectively.
‘Writing books for our children with
stories about us is really important’
• From page 1
So Bishop got in contact with
OUP and made a start on his
first book about a sheep, as sheep
farming was a major industry in
the 1980s. He called it Bidibidi.
However, the book took a few
years to publish as Bishop had to
learn how to write and illustrate
for children, something an OUP
editor helped him with.
The second book Bishop wrote
he set in Linwood, where he was
still teaching, and even used the
old Edmonds baking powder
factory on Ferry Rd as one of the
major buildings in the book. He
called it Mrs McGinty and the
Bizarre Plant.
Bishop said writing this book
was “much more straightforward”
as he began to get the
hang of creating stories for children,
and it was even published
before Bidibidi.
Bishop continued to teach
art, while working on his books
at the same time, often in the
school holidays and at night after
dinner.
In 1998, he decided to pursue
writing and illustrating books
full-time. He remembers handing
in his letter of resignation
to the headmaster at Christ’s
College.
“He rung me up and said ‘are
you sure you want to do this’ and
I said ‘yup’ and he said ‘would
you like me to tear the letter up’
and I said ‘no, I’m really going to
go ahead with this’.”
That year Bishop wrote a book
called The House that Jack Built,
which looked at the impacts of
colonialism on New Zealand.
“It was very successful and
in fact it’s being used still, in
schools. That’s a book that’s been
around for quite some time and
looks as if it’s going to be still.”
Bishop recalls the moment he
knew he wanted to be an artist at
the age of four when a signwriter
came to the small town of
Kingston, south of Queenstown,
where he lived.
The signwriter came to paint
some signs outside the Kingston
pub – which has since burnt
down – and while he was there,
he was asked to paint a big mural
on the wall above the bar.
Bishop hadn’t seen a real
painting before and was allowed
to go and watch the signwriter at
work.
“I used to stand watching him
paint this big scene of the lake
up on the wall and I found that
absolutely magical,” he said.
“That’s when I think I thought,
that’s what I want to do.”
Because Bishop was taller than
most kids his age, lots of adults
would tell him he should become
a policeman.
“That’s all you had to be, you
didn’t have to be fit or smart
or clever or anything like that,
you just had to be tall and I
would say ‘I don’t want to be
a policeman, I want to be an
artist’.”
DREAM JOB: Gavin Bishop knew he wanted to be an artist when he was four-years-old,
after watching a signwriter paint a mural at the local pub in Kingston.
PHOTO: KAREN CASEY
Bishop remembers the first
time he saw his book on sale at
the old Whitcoulls on Cashel St,
which was demolished after the
earthquakes.
“I can remember walking
through there and seeing my
first book for sale and they had
a mountain of it, they had like
a hundred or more copies all
stacked up and stacked on the
floor I think.”
He can’t remember if it was
Bidibidi or Mrs McGinty and the
Bizarre Plant, but he asked the
shop assistant if they wanted
him to sign the books.
“I sat down and spent ages
signing these books, and what
was wonderful was they all sold
quite quickly and they had to get
some more in,” he said.
Bishop works from his studio
at his Cashmere home with
his wife Vivien, who he met at
art school. She was also an art
teacher, for Avonside Girls’ High
School.
When asked what she thought
about his achievements he
laughed and said he didn’t know.
“We don’t talk about it much,
it’s just part of our lives.
“Sometimes I’ll grab her to
look at my work and get her to
tell me what she thinks is wrong
with it,” he said.
Bishop and Vivien have
three daughters and three
grandchildren, who have all
grown up reading his books.
On a couple of occasions
his grandchildren have made
suggestions for books they would
like to read, which Bishop has
carried out.
When his grandson George
was four he asked Bishop why
he hadn’t written a story about a
digger.
“He said ‘well I think you
FAMILY: Gavin Bishop with
his daughter Alexandra and
his book Chicken Licken
in 1984. PHOTO: CCL
should write a book about a
digger because I’d like to read it’
and I thought ‘oh okay’,” Bishop
said.
Soon after Bruiser was
published, a book about an
angry digger that becomes
caring and sensitive towards the
end of the story.
Bishop said when he first started
authoring children’s books, he
was keen to write his own stories
about things he wanted to write
about.
He has stories based off his
Māori whakapapa and has rewritten
old fairy tales. However,
in recent years, he has been
commissioned to write books by
his publishers, which he said has
been a new challenge.
His latest book is called E Hoa,
with te reo Māori and English
versions available. It is part of a
series for very young children,
which will be released on
Wednesday.
The book aims at showing
children how to talk about
feelings through a friendship
between a child and their dog.
Bishop tends to work on one
book at a time, preferring to
finish one concept before moving
onto the next.
He said his work can become
quite consuming and often has
a hard time switching off from
thinking about his books.
“I’m always working on it, it’s
hard to let it go.”
Of the 70-plus books Bishop
has created, several have
been translated into different
languages, mostly to other
European languages, but recently
he has had some translated into
Asian languages.
Bruiser has been translated
and sold in China, Taiwan
and Korea and another book
called Teddy One Eye, which is
a disguised biography about his
life seen through the eyes of his
teddy bear, has been translated
and sold in China.
“I don’t hear from anyone in
China who has read it but the
fact that it’s been reprinted a
couple of times means that it’s
obviously selling well enough,”
he said.
Bishop believes a country is
made up partly by its literature
and arts, something he thinks
New Zealanders tend to forget
– instead, getting carried away
with devotion to sport.
“I think in a hundred years
time people will still know who
Kiri Te Kanawa is and who Janet
Frame was and who Joy Cowley
was. They’ll still know those
people because their work will
still be speaking to the people in
the future.”
When asked if he thought he
would ever have more than 70
books published he admitted
he just started and “sort of kept
going”.
It never occurred to him how
successful he would be, although
it was “nice to be recognised”
through various awards, he said.
He has recently been named
a finalist in the Publishers
Association of New Zealand
2022 awards for best children’s
book, which will be announced
in September. He has previously
won two PANZ awards for
the best use of illustration in
a children’s book in 2000 and
2009.
When asked if retirement was
approaching at the ripe old age
of 76, he laughed and said he
wouldn’t know what to do with
himself if he stopped creating
books.
“At the moment I’m managing
to produce work that’s okay and
I’ll keep going while I’m doing
that. I mean it keeps me alive, it’s
challenging and it’s interesting
and I get to meet interesting
people,” he said.
“Writing books for our
children with stories about us is
A word from Ilam MP
Sarah
Pallett
Learning about trees
Five-and-six-year-old pupils from St
Joseph’s School have been learning
about New Zealand native birds
and trees, junior school leader Anna
Alfano said. After visiting Riccarton
Bush, the children were inspired to
help Dennis McMurtrie bring back
to life Papanui Bush (Bridgestone
Reserve). Dennis has made it a
retirement project to restore the
reserve to its former glory. The
school’s youngest and newest
members, Ayva and Seán (above),
planted a Totara tree with Dennis.
Junior school children then worked
alongside Dennis to plant some
native bush, which was donated by
Zealandia.
Winter is in full swing, and I know
how challenging things are right now
for many in our community with the
increased cost of living.
The fundamentals of our economy
are strong at present. Unemployment
is at a record low, exports are up, and
our economic activity has continued
to grow over the past year. But, with
inflation rising around the world and
the war in Ukraine driving up fuel
prices, cost of living pressures are
making things tough for many Kiwis.
In order to fight inflation and ease
the pressure on people here in
Canterbury, we’ve extended the fuel
tax cut, reduced road user charges,
and half price public transport for
everyone until the end of January
next year.
This extension is one way we can
help to make life more affordable, as
well as providing more certainty in
the face of volatile prices at the petrol
pump. It will also help reduce the
fuel burden on businesses, keeping
the cost of food and essential goods
lower across the board.
There’s no easy fix for the cost of
living, but we’re taking a range of
actions to ease the pressure. The first
of our new cost of living payments
will go out soon, supporting more
than two million people. We’re also
fixing the supermarket sector and
increasing competition, to make
sure that Kiwis pay a fair price at the
checkout.
We will continue to support Kiwis
in the face of global inflation, as well
as helping families and businesses
here in Canterbury and across the
country, get ahead.
As always, I’m here to help. Please
get in touch if you need any
assistance.
Make good use of your roasting dish
With the spiralling
cost of food,
chicken wings are
an economical
and affordable
way to make a
meal
Pot-roast chicken wings
with tarragon gravy
Serves 4-6
Ingredients
1 tbsp butter
2kg chicken wings
1 garlic bulb
2 leeks
20 button mushrooms
2 carrots
2 tbsp olive oil
375ml dry white wine
500ml chicken stock
1 bunch tarragon
Directions
Preheat the oven to 220 deg
C. Turn the wings under the
chicken and truss for roasting.
Rub the chicken with the butter
and whole garlic bulb, halved,
then season.
Place leeks (chopped into
3cm pieces), carrots (chopped
into 3cm pieces), mushrooms
and more garlic in a roasting
dish. Place chicken on top of
vegetables, drizzle with olive oil
and then pour the wine around
the chicken (not over the top).
Roast for 30min, then pour
the hot chicken stock around the
chicken. Reduce the oven to 180
deg C, roast for another 30 to
45min.
Lift out the chicken and
vegetables (keep covered and
warm) and strain the pan juices
into a saucepan. Simmer over
medium heat until reduced and
thickened to make a glossy
gravy.
Add the tarragon leaves and
check the seasoning just before
serving with the chicken and
vegetables.
Roasted cherry tomato
quiche with chickpea
crust
Serves 4-6
Ingredients
Chickpea crust:
¾ cup (135gm) dried chickpeas,
soaked in cold water overnight,
or 400gm tin cooked chickpeas,
rinsed, or 1 ½ cups cooked
chickpeas
¼ cup (35gm) fine brown rice
flour
2 tbsp tapioca flour or glutenfree
organic cornflour
½ tsp gluten-free baking powder
1 and ½ tbsp olive oil
½ tsp fine sea salt
Filling:
500gm cherry tomatoes, cut in
half
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 tbsp finely chopped thyme
3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
4 large free-range eggs
¾ cup (185ml) coconut, almond
or rice milk
½ cup firmly packed basil
leaves, finely shredded plus
extra, to serve
2 tsp dijon mustard
2 tbsp finely chopped chives
2 tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf
parsley
½ tsp fine sea salt
¼ tsp ground black pepper
Directions
Drain and rinse chickpeas.
Place in a saucepan and cover
with plenty of fresh cold water.
Bring to the boil, skimming off
any foam that rises to the surface.
Reduce to a simmer and cook for
25-35 minutes or until tender but
not falling apart. Drain well and
set aside to cool slightly. Preheat
oven to 180 deg C. Grease a 32 x
12 cm loose-bottom fluted tart tin
or a 23cm round loose-bottom
tart tin.
Arrange tomatoes cut-side-up
on an oven tray, scatter with garlic
and thyme, drizzle with olive
oil and season well with sea salt
and freshly ground black pepper.
Roast for 30min or until tender
and slightly dried.
To make the crust, pulse chickpeas
in a food processor until
finely ground (a few lumps are
okay). Transfer to a bowl and add
brown rice flour, tapioca flour
and baking powder. Mix thoroughly
with your hands, add oil
and salt and mix to a stiff dough.
Press evenly into the tin, lining
the base and sides and using the
back of a spoon to firmly press
down. Bake for 6-8 minutes to
lightly set. Scatter two-thirds of
the roast tomatoes and herbs over
the pastry base.
Whisk eggs, milk, basil, mustard,
herbs and seasoning and
pour into the pastry case. Bake
for 45-55min or until brown.
Add leek and garlic, cooking on low
Wheriko: to shimmer,
shine and be brilliant!
We, the year 7/8 students at Merrin School,
can’t wait to move back into our renovated
space, ‘Wheriko’. This name is in keeping
with the star theme at Merrin School, Ngā
Whetū Kohara (The Shining Stars). We
are really looking forward to designing the
interior, and have high hopes for a fish tank,
beanbags, couches, maker space, breakout
rooms and purpose-built scooter and bag
storage. In the words of Ollie, “The team
hopes that the build will be so sparkly that
everyone will need sunglasses!”
We are focused on an excellent
standard of learning for all our pupils
within a context of strong biblical values,
family involvement and an emphasis on
knowing all our pupils well.
‘Grow in Wisdom and Stature, Stand
our pupils to stand and be confident in
the communities they will take their
place in and believe that education is
a lot more than just learning facts and
Empowering
girls to learn,
live and lead
Bridget Compton-Moen is head of St
Margaret’s College Junior School, which
caters for girls in Years 0-6.
Having joined SMC in January of
this year, and with more than 25 years’
teaching experience in New Zealand and
internationally, Bridget has been struck by
the warm, supportive and family focused
environment on campus.
Bridget says: “The girls flourish as
a result of the small class sizes and
individual classrooms, which enable our
specialist Junior School teachers to form
deep relationships with their students.
Our teachers really understand the girls’
specific learning needs, and are committed
to their wellbeing.
“This year we have implemented a
structured literacy approach for our
Year 4-6 students, having seen incredible
success with our Year 1-3 girls. This is
an approach based on years of scientific
research that really enables girls to crack
the code of reading from the get-go.”
“We are intent on getting the
core curriculum right, ensuring the
girls are engaged in their learning,
with a strong grasp on literacy and
numeracy and the skills they need to
succeed through Junior School and
into our Middle School.”
Another recent addition to the
Junior School is Friendology,
an award-winning wellbeing
programme focused on healthy
friendships. SMC is the only school
in New Zealand currently to offer
this programme, which has been
embedded throughout the Junior
School.
An extensive programme of
co-curricular activities, including
sports, performing arts, kapa haka, and
computational thinking, supports the girls
in making connections, while enabling
them to discover their passions. SMC
has a strong focus on holistic education,
designed to strengthen character, service
and leadership. As part of this a Junior
School Council, made up of Year 12-13
students, has responsibility for building
connections with their ‘little sisters’ and
acting as mentors.
“I’m thrilled to be working alongside our
incredible students and staff, and I look
forward to working with families who are
at the beginning of their Junior School
journey.” Bridget adds.
RAY WHITE PAPANUI NEWS
Auction your home with us this winter for
only $1,000* & then we’ll give it back!
We are super excited to launch our Winter Warmers Auction Special! Auction your
home with Ray White Papanui this winter for only $1,999* & then we’ll give it back!
*T&C’s in brief: $1999.00 is the marketing campaign cost, standard commission
rates apply. Special offer available for any listing authorities signed up with
Ray White Papanui in July & August 2022. Marketing is payable upfront. Not
available in conjunction with any other offer.
Having worked in the property management industry in
Canterbury for over 15 years, I have experienced many
different market trends, from high supply and low demand,
to high demand and low supply! However the market we are
currently experiencing is like nothing I have worked in before,
with low supply, but also low demand!
It is difficult to establish exactly what is causing this, and of
course there are always exceptions to the rule, but overall it
seems that tenants are electing to stay put as opposed to move
to a new home, and while we have Kiwis starting to head off
overseas, it would seem that we don’t have as many immigrants
coming into Canterbury.
Reading comments from other property managers throughout
New Zealand, we are all experiencing similar issues, with
tenants making enquiries, booking viewings and then not
turning up! Then those who do are often not applying for the
property, or frustratingly applying and then when they are
accepted changing their minds and declining the property!
There also seem to be a number of people who seem to turn up
to every single viewing you have, but don’t apply for anything.
So where to from here? Well this is where your reputation and
marketing really comes in. What will make your rental property
stand out in a competitive market? We use a professional
photographer to ensure we can show the property to its best
What does your Auction campaign package include?
• Trademe.co.nz | Silver package
The rental market is changing - again
potential, as they say a picture is worth a thousand words. We
also add a good description and make it easy for tenants to
enquire and book in for a viewing.
Equally important is that tenants want to rent from you. This
week alone we have had two phone calls into the office from
tenants who are renting through private landlords asking
us to manage the property they are renting - that is not the
tenants decision of course, but there is a real shift with tenants
understanding the value of renting through a good property
management company.
While the rent amount is of course always an important factor,
we still need to ensure that the property is financially viable for
a landlord as if it ends up costing them too much they may have
no choice but to exit the rental market and then we end up back
in a cycle where we once again have a shortage of properties
for tenants to rent!
