SELWYN GARDENING GUIDE SPRING 2021
Keep trees
pruned regularly
To keep your trees looking great and in a stable
and healthy condition, make sure you have them
pruned by a professional arborist every three years
or whenever you have cause for concern.
The Tree People are Canterbury-based arborists
who combine the science and art of tree care with
technical experience, passion, modern equipment
and sustainable practices.
Utilising research combined with experience in
restoration and revegetation, The Tree People
provide excellent, affordable tree care methods
that maintain and care for our environment.
Your trees enhance and beautify your home,
whether it’s modern or historic, add to the overall
beauty of your suburb and can increase your
home’s value.
The Tree People always encourage people to prune
and keep their trees before removing them. If they
do have to be removed, the team can help you
decide which is the right tree for replanting as they
are passionate about the right tree being in the
right place.
Consulting
Trees give many tell-tale signs when they’re
struggling or there’s a problem. A trained arborist
will be able to spot trouble that the untrained eye
can’t see, so please seek professional advice if you
think you might have a tree that’s not doing so well.
When it comes to inspecting your trees, get The Tree
People’s experts in to consult with you about what
you want.
If you need any help with your trees contact locally
based experts Ra, Megan and The Tree People
team at 0508 TREE PEOPLE, email them at info@
thetreepeople.nz or visit www.thetreepeople.nz for
more information.

SELWYN GARDENING GUIDE SPRING 2021
A gardener’s dream job
becomes a reality
Words & Photos: Fi Maddison
What is it like to work in the shadow of 100+ year
old trees or under the gaze of a stately home
built in 1912?
Local gardener Rhyannon Gregg knows exactly
what it is like and feels privileged to have a job she
loves with a passion.
“You feel special when you are here,” she says.
“When I arrive each day, I take a walk around the
garden to see what has happened and get super
excited when I find something new or a particular
plant has flowered.”
This year is Rhyannon’s third spring looking after
the Racecourse Hill Homestead gardens. She has
always enjoyed gardening from a tender young
age and has a background working in nurseries.
“Gardening has grounded me,” she says. “It has a
purpose and makes my heart sing. Everyone should
have a bit of soil to garden in.”
Rhyannon’s journey at Racecourse Hill started when
her partner, Brandon, a tree specialist, was working
at the estate and she made regular visits on the
pretext of taking him his lunch. While she was there,
she would pull a few weeds and just enjoy spending
time wandering around the gardens. After Brandon
approached the owner, Denver Glass, Rhyannon
was soon offered the opportunity to look after the
church gardens and since then has steadily worked
her way around the property, now working 20 hours
a week.
For Rhyannon, it was a dream come true but she
soon learnt that she had to keep some of her
enthusiasm in check, quickly realizing that she
needed to work on restoring the gardens already
there rather than creating new ones.
She says, “It’s about bringing out the beauty of
what they have, otherwise it would be endless.”
When she first started she soon realised the garden
needed softening; it already had numerous trees –
some over 100 years old, including a magnificent
sequoia, several varieties of oaks, field maples,
limes, chestnuts and conifers. There were also
a number of established rhododendrons, a few
daffodils and a small orchard. Rhyannon has since
planted new rhododendrons, numerous perennials,
and thousands of daffodils that came from her
aunt’s property, previously a daffodil farm.
Rhyannon is keen to know who planted the trees,
where all the naturalised bulb plantings have gone
and was there originally a vegetable garden?
“I’ve tried to find out about the early history
of garden but there doesn’t seem to be any
information kept about it. It’s been more about the
house and no-one seems to know,” she says, “I’ve
asked plenty of people including previous owners.
Old photos just don’t show any gardens.”
Part of her joy in the garden is finding unexpected
little treasures such as when she cleared the bank
behind the house and found that some dainty,
double flowering snowdrops had popped up or
when, in amongst the clearings under the big trees,
she found some violets.
She says there are plans to create some paths
amongst the towering giants and naturalise the
area beneath them with aquilegia and foxgloves.
Now with the gardens coming to life and attracting
the attention they deserve, Racecourse Hill is open
to the public.
“It’s a shame for people to just drive past and not
to share it,” says Rhyannon, who has been working
steadily with the owner and the estate manager to
offer weddings, group visits by appointment and
open days to visitors.
The stately 1912 homestead, designed by architect
Cecil Wood, now has a garden that not only
complements its English domestic revival design
but will also bring pleasure to all those who wander
through its gardens for years to come.
Racecourse Hill Homestead will be open to the
public on the 10th and 31st October, and the 21st
November. To find out more about the open days
or to book a group visit or wedding, visit: www.
your plants with the
for healthy growth
and development.
Organic Compost
Lawn Topdressing Mix
A crowd favourite, our lawn mix is ideal for
topdressing or overseeding lawns that need some
love. Suitable to sow straight into, or to pop
ready lawn on top of, this mix will create a great
growing environment for the seed to germinate.
Our Organic Compost is blended
from sustainable, natural, and
carefully selected products and is
independently certified through
BioGro. Dig compost through
your soil to boost the nutrients
and condition your area before
planting. We have had fantastic
reviews from customers who just
love our compost, and it is one
of our best sellers all-year-round!
Birdie’s Garden Beds
and are suitable for a wide range of plants from veggies to
fruit, herbs or flowers. Available in 3 different sizes and
colours, there is sure to be something that catches your eye.
Growing Veggies
Growing veggies is a great way to get
the whole family involved in gardening.
It is very rewarding eating meals that
have veggies you have grown yourself.
The other bonus of growing your own
vegetables is that you can grow what
you what, you know what they are
growing in, and you have confidence in
knowing they are free from nasty sprays.
1. Pick a sunny position for your veggie garden
with shelter from the wind
2. If you’re using timber, untreated is best. If using
treated timber line with black plastic.
3. Having a good quality soil is key for growing
a bumper crop. For leafy, above the ground
produce, choose Intelligro Veggie Garden Mix.
For root crops, (potatoes, radishes etc) choose
Intelligro Garden Soil Mix. A soil blend is
preferred by these plants.
4. Make sure you plant quality, in-season seedling.
5. For a successful veggie garden make sure you
establish a regular watering routine. Plants will
bolt to seed if they are stressed due to a lack
of water.
SELWYN GARDENING GUIDE SPRING 2021 | 7
Your organics bin is only
for the following items...
Garden prunings,
clippings and leaves
Meat, bones
and fish
Fruit and vegetables
Organic bins
Bread, pastries
and dairy products
Spring is the perfect time to get back
into the garden and start filling up your
organics bin again.
The Selwyn District Council’s green
organics bins can be utilised for
garden prunings, weeds, leaves and
grass clippings.
Food items such as bread, dairy
products, fruit, vegetables fish, meat,
bones, coffee grinds, as well as foodsoiled
cardboard containers and
paper towels can also be placed in
the green bin.
Here are some useful tips to ensure
your bin is fully emptied every week:
• Keep the bin weight under 60kg. If
you find it difficult to move the bin,
then you may find it exceeds the truck
lifting limits.
•Keep the bin contents loose. Don’t
compact your material by standing on
it (it may not come out when tipped
by the truck).
• Place weeds, branches or
newspaper at the bottom of the bin
before filling with grass clippings. This
reduces the likelihood of the grass
clippings getting stuck.
• Organics only! No plastic bags
(including those labelled as
compostable, degradable or
biodegradable), metals, timber,
sawdust, glass, rocks, stones or bricks
as these cause considerable damage
to the organics shredder.
• Flax and cabbage leaves need to
go in your red rubbish bin (as these
get caught up in the shredder).
• Make sure your bin is not overflowing
– the lid needs to close.
For townships with organic collection;
why not swap your 240 litre rubbish
bin for a 240 litre organic bin and an
80 litre rubbish bin? You’ll save money
and the environment!
Unsure about an item? Check out
selwyn.govt.nz/organics.
Tips to ensure your bin is fully emptied:
· Keep items loose.
· Keep the bin weight reasonable.
· Place weeds, branches or newspaper
at the bottom of the bin before filling
with grass clippings (to avoid contents
getting stuck).
selwyn.govt.nz/organics
Coffee grinds
Food soiled cardboard
containers and paper towels
· No plastic bags (including compostable
or biodegradable), metals, glass, rocks,
stones, bricks or rubbish.
· Flax and cabbage tree leaves should go
in the red bin.
· Make sure the lid closes.
SELWYN GARDENING GUIDE SPRING 2021
Look local
for electrical needs
A passion
For Julie Powell-Booth, being in touch
with nature has always been a big
part of her life whether it has been in
her past occupation as a Cordon Bleu
chef and restaurateur incorporating
fresh herbs in her dishes or now in her
spacious West Melton garden growing
culinary and medicinal herbs.
Julie has recently turned her love
of gardening into a small boutique
business called The Herbal Garden,
creating herbal products for her
growing clientele. After being made
redundant from her full time job four
years ago, she decided to go back to
nature and took on a year’s study in
organics at Lincoln University followed
by a 9-month herbal apprenticeship
with herbalist Valmai Becker at Little
River.
“I had grown culinary herbs in the
past and used them in my cooking
but learning about the medicinal
side of herbs was a totally different
side for me and quite exciting too,”
says Julie. “I came away thinking
this blends really well with what I’m
doing organically so I might as well do
something with it.”
Locally owned and operated from
their base in Rolleston, Juice Electrical
has been looking after the needs of
Selwyn residents for 15years.
Greg Horton and his team of four
master electricians providing a
professional and timely service
whether it is residential, commercial or
industrial, indoors or outdoors.
“We pride ourselves on going the
extra mile particularly with repair and
renovation work and we’re very strong
on maintenance,” says Greg.
Creating a special ambience
outdoors is part of the service.
Integrated LED lighting is becoming
very popular as it is a lot easier and
less expensive to install because there
is no need to dig trenches for wiring.
Outdoor options include up-lighting
trees and buildings, deck lighting and
floodlights as well as security lighting.
They advise on the best type and
where they should be placed. Greg
recommends installing sensors so the
lights come on automatically at dusk.
“We discuss the customer’s ideas
with them, show them photos of
other gardens with attractive outdoor
lighting and make suggestions on
how they can make the most of their
outdoor area with a range of LED
lighting options,” says Greg.
In fact LED lights are now the preferred
option for indoor and outdoor lighting
as well.
Juice Electrical does not have a
vehicle charge for Rolleston so look
out for the brightly coloured Juice
Electrical vans as they work hard
to look after the Selwyn district’s
electrical needs. Call Greg and the
for herbs
Protect your outdoor
space this summer
Julie now enjoys making a range
of 100% natural herbal-based hand
creams, moisturising bars, balms, oils
and teas. She says that winter is a
good time to experiment and perfect
her products, using family as testers
until just the right balance is created.
All Julie’s products are created onsite
from beginning to end including
growing, drying, making and selling.
She has a certified space for drying
and packaging her teas and also
has space to offer workshops for
those interested in trying their hand at
making herbal products.
A typical day for Julie includes an
early start working in the garden
before it gets too hot, picking herbs
around 10am and laying them out on
special trays in the drying room, then
working on her creams and lotions
Protecting your outdoor area from
the elements during summer, or any
time of the year, can be as simple as
giving Mark a call at locally owned
company Shadecraft.
Shadecraft specialises in custommade
shade options that are both
affordable and attractive tailored to
suit your needs. Options for protection
against the weather include shade
sails, louvres, wave shades, eclipse
canopies, umbrellas and drop blinds
with a large range of sizes and a
myriad of colours.
light. These can also be fitted with
drop blinds to fully enclose the area.
choice and provide protection from
the sun during the hot Canterbury
summers while also visually enhancing
the area while you are outside
relaxing with family and friends.
outdoor area for the warmer months
or you need some advice for what
would work in your space contact
A new swimming pool will make a splash this summer
and you will find your friends and family will love your
pool as much as you do. With summer on its way, now
is the perfect time to organise the installation of your
pool with local company Lagoon Pools.
Owners Julie and Warren Hastings install pools sized
from five metres to 12 metres in length to suit both
large and small sections, with a huge variety of widths,
colours and shapes.
“There really is a pool for every site,” says Julie.
Lagoon Pools is also the Leisure Pools dealer for most
of the South Island featuring 100% composite fibreglass
and, with patented innovations, every swimming pool
is supported by their lifetime structural warranty and
a lifetime osmosis warranty – this makes them the
strongest pool available on the market.
Pool automation is becoming popular with equipment
monitoring and settings right at your fingertips from
any location. Additional features including pool
lighting, fountains and spa jets to enhance the pool
area, transforming it into an extended living space
where family and friends can relax in the outdoors,
Julie says.
It takes around five days to install a pool and the
finishing touches can take from four weeks depending
upon the design.
Contact Lagoon Pools by phoning Julie or Warren 0800
927 282 or 03 349 2160. You can also visit their website
SELWYN GARDENING GUIDE SPRING 2021
Time to Spring
clean
your tools
If you’ve been using your gardening tools aver the
last few months, it’s a good idea to take stock of
the condition of your tools and give them a bit of
love and care before summer arrives. Keeping your
gardening tools clean and in tip-top shape means
a much happier time spent in the gardening. As
with all tools, for longevity, it pays to keep them
under cover when not in use – in the garden shed or
garage.
The workhorse of the garden
The wheelbarrow makes light work of heavy and
cumbersome jobs such as moving soil, mulch, rocks,
and plants. A good solid wheelbarrow looked after
and well maintained can last in your garden shed
for many years. Always hose your wheelbarrow
down after a particularly dirty job to prevent the
barrow or bucket from rusting. Try not to leave a
full wheelbarrow out in the rain for days, as this can
accelerate the rust; instead empty the wheelbarrow
as soon as possible.
To keep the wheel in good working order, give the
axle bearings a squirt with the grease gun. Check
the tyre regularly as a deflated tyre will make using
the wheelbarrow hard work. To maintain pressure,
make sure it is kept inflated – use an old bicycle
pump or an electric pressure pump.
A clean cut
Regular cleaning after each use will help keep
your lawnmower in good mowing condition.
Always make sure the lawnmower is turned off (you
could remove the spark plug to be extra safe) or
unplugged (if electric)before you begin to clean
it. Use a stiff brush (a hearth brush with a handle
works well) to clean off any freshly mown grass and
clumps of dried grass and dirt.
Carefully turn the lawnmower on to its side and hose
off, with a fine jet of water, the remaining grass and
dirt – make sure you get into any hidden crevices.
Use gloves if you need to use your hands to remove
any clumps and take special care around the sharp
blades. A light spray of cooking oil may help stop
grass clinging on to your blades.
Always keep the blades sharp for a good cut;
blunt blades tend to rip the grass with a resulting
bedraggled cut.
Keep those gardening tools in
tip top condition
To clean: use one tablespoon of dishwashing
liquid to one bucket of hot water. Soak garden
tools for 2-3 minutes, and then scrub lightly with
a brush to loosen and remove any solid soil and
plant matter. For secateurs, scour the blades lightly
with an abrasive pad using long slow strokes. Rinse
thoroughly in warm water. Dry with a soft cloth and
then leave to air dry for 5-10 minutes. To prevent
rust, use a cloth dipped in vegetable oil and spay
lubricant.
Disinfect between uses on different plant
species: use one part household bleach, or tea
tree oil, to 10 parts water. Dip secateurs, trowels,
etc. into the solution for around 30 seconds. Rinse
clean with water and allow to air dry or use a soft
cloth to dry.
Keep your tools sharp all year round: take
your tools to a tool-sharpening specialist for a
professional finish.
Flowers in November, 1.5m.
Their blooms are bold and beautiful
Rhododendrons bloom once a year in spring and they
certainly make their presence known when they start to
flower. Their flower clusters tend to range from 5-9 inches
across so they are difficult to ignore. They come in a wide
range of colours including white, pink, blue, red, yellow,
apricot and blends of colours.
They are evergreen and eye-catching even
without flowers
As well as fantastic flowers, rhododendrons also make a
statement with their foliage. Their attractive large, dark
green leaves is what most people think of when describing
rhododendron leaves. However, they come in a variety of
leaf sizes, colours and textures.
Low maintenance
Generally after planting and mulching, all that is required
is fertiliser in spring and keeping them well watered in
summer to encourage flower buds for next season.
Rhododendrons are great for shaded gardens
It can be challenging finding colourful and dynamic plants
for a shaded garden. This is where rhododendrons really
come into their own. They provide reliable structure when
not in bloom and they brighten up shady spots when
they are flowering. They look great planted under any
deciduous tree.
Choosing the right rhododendron
With over 450 different varieties of rhododendron grown on
Spring planting tips
Spring is the one of the best planting seasons. This time
of year is an ideal time to plant most species, if they’re
still in stock this season!
Preparation is everything
Remember to prepare your soil before planting. Mix in
plenty of compost and gypsum for best results.
Protect from pests and diseases
Pests and diseases thrive as your garden grows.
Use Neem granules and oil to help ward off any nasties.
It’s the perfect time to mulch
Keeps the moisture in and the weeds out. See our friends at
Intelligro for great advice and mulch supply.
A great time to fertilise
As plants re-enter their growth phase, they need lots of
nutrition. We recommend Grotabs slow release fertiliser and
Yates Thrive Liquid Fish & Seaweed.
