A gardener’s dream job<br />

becomes a reality<br />

What is it like to work in the shadow of 100+ year<br />

old trees or under the gaze of a stately home<br />

built in 1912?<br />

Local gardener Rhyannon Gregg knows exactly<br />

what it is like and feels privileged to have a job she<br />

loves with a passion.<br />

“You feel special when you are here,” she says.<br />

“When I arrive each day, I take a walk around the<br />

garden to see what has happened and get super<br />

excited when I find something new or a particular<br />

plant has flowered.”<br />

This year is Rhyannon’s third spring looking after<br />

the Racecourse Hill Homestead gardens. She has<br />

always enjoyed gardening from a tender young<br />

age and has a background working in nurseries.<br />

“Gardening has grounded me,” she says. “It has a<br />

purpose and makes my heart sing. Everyone should<br />

have a bit of soil to garden in.”<br />

Rhyannon’s journey at Racecourse Hill started when<br />

her partner, Brandon, a tree specialist, was working<br />

at the estate and she made regular visits on the<br />

pretext of taking him his lunch. While she was there,<br />

she would pull a few weeds and just enjoy spending<br />

time wandering around the gardens. After Brandon<br />

approached the owner, Denver Glass, Rhyannon<br />

was soon offered the opportunity to look after the<br />

church gardens and since then has steadily worked<br />

her way around the property, now working 20 hours<br />

a week.<br />

For Rhyannon, it was a dream come true but she<br />

soon learnt that she had to keep some of her<br />

enthusiasm in check, quickly realizing that she<br />

needed to work on restoring the gardens already<br />

there rather than creating new ones.<br />
